HALDEMAN Ronald Wayne Haldeman, age 67, from Margaree, Nova Scotia, died on December 12th, 2016, in Inverness, NS. Ron is survived by his son Ben; daughter Kristen; and his brother John. Ron was born on May 23rd, 1949 in Doylestown, Pennsylvania, to parents Edna and John Haldeman. Ron moved with his family from Pennsylvania to North East Margaree, Cape Breton, in 1980. For the next 35 years he worked toward the appropriate and sustainable development of his homestead and the Margaree watershed and its communities. He built his own home overlooking the Northeast Margaree River, as well as other buildings in Cape Breton and Pennsylvania. He established the first salmon fishing outfitting business on the Margaree River. He was an avid organic gardener, a proponent of solar energy, an environmentalist, a salmon fishing guide, an outdoor enthusiast, and practised mindful meditation. With a background in biology, Ron consistently championed the principles of science and ecology, and in later years he focussed on history and archeology. Ron made his feelings evident, and challenged injustice. However, he was equally self-critical. He was a recovering alcoholic, and credited Alcoholics Anonymous as having saved his life, enabling him to enjoy 25 years of sobriety. He always had a dog, and developed a particularly profound relationship with his last dog, Lucy, who was loyal and disciplined. Ron put his environmental awareness into action. He served as a plaintiff in the Herbicide Trial, which opposed the spraying of Agent Orange on Crown lands in Nova Scotia. He authored a cost-benefit analysis of the Margaree salmon fishery, which contributed to a sustainable plan for the industry, and he became a founding member of the Margaree Salmon Association. Ron was also active in his community of friends and neighbours. He dedicated his time and resources to supporting the youth in Margaree, and for more than a decade he coached boys and girls soccer. He was proud to provide employment and opportunity to young people striving to establish themselves in Margaree. He will be remembered as a dedicated, supportive, and loving father, mentor, and friend. A memorial gathering was held on January 2nd, 2017 to celebrate his life. Ron will be missed. WILLIAMS Harold Joseph (Bud) Williams, age 80, of Cheticamp, N.S., passed away on Tuesday, January 17th, 2017, in Sacred Heart Community Health Centre after a long, courageous battle with esophageal cancer. Born in St. John’s, Newfoundland, he was a son of the late Harold Baxter (Shorty) and Madeline (Stanford) Williams. Bud started his young career by enlisting in the Canadian Army where he served a posting in Germany. After leaving the army he went to work with National Sea Products, fishing out of Halifax, St. John’s, and other ports for numerous years. While in port in Halifax on one particular trip he met a young lady, Pauline Poirier. Smitten, Pauline dragged him to Cheticamp to show off her newfound treasure to her mom and dad, as well as her sisters, brothers, cousins, nephews, nieces, and friends and behold, as the story goes, a few strangers and a few tourists to firm up her holding! Bud immediately fell in love with Cheticamp where they moved and spent the rest of his life. Bud loved commercial fishing and spent his career fishing lobster, crab, et al., out of Cheticamp. Bud also greatly enjoyed trout fishing with his good friends Charlie Poirier and Eddy Joe Camus. It was in Cheticamp that Bud and Pauline were blessed with a beautiful daughter, Michelle, and a beautiful stepdaughter, Evelyn Doyle, who were both the “apple of his eye”. Over our numerous phone conversations over the years Bud would elevate these three ladies to queens, princesses, or just plain royalty! Surviving are his wife Pauline (Poirier) Williams; his daughter Michelle (Robert) Poirier; stepdaughter Evelyn (Stephen) Doyle (both of Cheticamp); brothers James, known as Jim, (Mary) Williams and Charles (Pearl) Williams; sisters Florence Little, Madonna Williams (Hugh Joseph), Norma Murphy, and Dorothy Michaels; and other relatives too numerous to mention, but Bud would want us to mention his favourite aunt, Aunt Elsie in Mount Pearl, Newfoundland. Predeceased by brothers Cyril and youngest brother John; brothers-in-law Ross Little and Patty Murphy; and sister-in-law Blanche Williams. Cremation has taken place. Funeral Mass held on Tuesday, January 24th, 2017, in St. Peter’s Church, Cheticamp. Burial will be at a later date in St. John’s, Newfoundland. Donations may be made to the Cape Breton Regional Hospital Foundation. Funeral was under the direction of Cheticamp Funeral Services Ltd. Condolences may be sent to, cheticampfuneral@ns.aliantzinc.ca <mailto:cheticampfuneral@ns.aliantzinc.ca>. This obituary was lovingly written by Bud’s brother, Charles Williams. Our loss is Heaven’s gain.
