She died peacefully on Tuesday, February 21, 2017, while living at the Cove Guest Home, Sydney. She was predeceased by her beloved husband of 72 years, David Menzies on August 1, 2013. She is survived by their three daughters and their families, Florence and Dale Griffin of Fremont, California, Helena and Gord Bugden of Peterborough, Ont., and Trisha and Greg Campbell of Pt. Elgin, Ont. Also surviving are seven grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. She will be dearly missed by her family and friends. Also predeceasing her were their two sons, David Alexander in 1951 and Frederick Richard in 1996; her brother, John MacGibbon and wife, Marjorie (Coombs) MacGibbon Ball; sister, Isabel (MacGibbon) and husband, Tom Campbell; stepfather, Benjamin Killam and his children, Paul, Bruce and Lynwood Killam, Lucy Morrison, Irene McSween, Faith Loughery and Enid Hicks; in-laws, Fred and Helene (Grezel) Menzies, Dolly (Menzies) and Walter Judge of Halifax and their sons, Wally and Doug. A lifelong Cape Bretoner, Tena grew up in the Pier and always fondly remembered her young years spent in that area. She was a homemaker and her main focus was on supporting her husband and raising her children. She loved to bake and many friends will remember enjoying the delicious ‘sweets’ she baked and shared with others. Reading, playing cards and knitting were also favorite activities. She and Dave played golf at Lingan well into their 80s, and after Dave retired, they spent the winter months, for many years, in Florida so they could golf year round. She and Dave were active members of their congregations and rarely missed Sunday services, even after moving into The Cove. Tena was always an active participant in Women’s Guilds in the United Church of Canada, and was a life member of UCW. A memorial service and interment will be held in the spring. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Building Fund of United Church, Sydney River or the Cove Auxiliary would be appreciated. The family would like to thank the staff and volunteers of the Cove for their excellent care and compassion. A special thank you also to Chrissie MacLeod and Arlene Canning whose many kindnesses and care enriched our Mother’s final days and gave comfort and support to our family. EMANUEL 'BUCKY' SIVES Born: May 16th, 1923 Passed on: February 22nd, 2017 It is with heartfelt sadness that we, the family, announce the peaceful passing of Emanuel “Bucky” Sives, on Wednesday, February 22, 2017, at the age of 93. Born to Emanuel and Jenny Sives on May 16, 1923, in Inverness. Bucky was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, great-great-grandfather, brother, uncle and friend. Bucky’s greatest joy and the center of his world was his wife of 71 years, Irene “Rene”. In Bucky’s eyes, the sun rose and set with his wife. She was everything to him, and their true love and devotion to each other serves as an inspiration to all who knew them. He was a devoted family man who enjoyed weekly Sunday dinners at his home with an ever-growing family. Bucky was well-known in Sydney for racing stock cars in the early 1960’s, and served as a firefighter with the Sydney River Volunteer Fire Department for 30 years. A lifelong PC Party member, Bucky was involved at both the Federal and Provincial levels, hosting many political events over the years. He was a devoted hockey fan, rarely missing a Cape Breton Screaming Eagles game. Together, Bucky and Rene enjoyed many years of traveling adventures in their motorhome. They spent winters in Florida and summers at ‘the bungalow’ in Northside East Bay. He spent his life working hard, first at Malcolm S. MacDonald, and then with S&M Trucking, a company he was instrumental in starting in 1967. Bucky was predeceased by his daughter, Brenda Irene (Sives) Buck in 2014; his sister, Amelia MacLeod; step-sister, Josephine, and step-brother, Louis Fiore. Bucky is survived by his devoted wife, Rene Sives; his son, Donnie (Colleen) Sives; and step-brother, Joe Fiore. Our loving Papa will be greatly missed by granddaughters, Andree (Wade) Quinton, Jodi (Shawn) Skinner, Janine (Peter) Sives-MacDonald; grandsons, Darren (Allison) Sives, and Troy (Debbie) Quinton; great-grandchildren, Alyssa (Chris) Butts, Kristopher Clark, Catherine Shaw, Alexander, Elizabeth, and Jillian Skinner, Abigail Reeves, Sadie Sives, and Matthew Quinton; great-great-grandchildren, Ryder and Elexis Butts. Bucky will also be dearly missed by brother and sister-in-law, Donnie and Mickey Hines and family, with whom he shared a special closeness over the years. He will be fondly remembered by his many nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family, and close friends. Visitation will take place at Sydney Memorial Chapel, Welton Street, Sydney, on Friday, February 24, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral service will be held at Church of Christ the King, George Street, Sydney, on Saturday, February 25, at 11 a.m., with Rev. Reg MacDonald officiating. A special thank you to Julie MacGillivary and Brenda Morrison for their support and care. Memorial donations may be made to Hospice Palliative Care Society of Cape Breton.
