Jessie passed away in the An Cala unit at the C.B. Regional Hospital on February 4, 2017. Born on December 5, 1982, she was the daughter of Cameron MacNeil and Kathy Gouthro and sister of John. She is survived by a large extended family who loved her dearly. Jessie was predeceased by her grandparents, Johnny (Hector) and Gert MacNeil and Matthias and Kay Gouthro. From her time growing up in Sydney to her studies in Halifax, and finally a server all across Canada, Jessie's insight, compassion and warmth made her friends wherever she went. As an excellent judge of character, she was able to find the best kind of people,creating lasting friendships. To know Jessie truly was to love her. Emma "Blan" (Humby) MacDonald Born In: Sydney Born: July 23rd, 1924 Passed on: February 6th, 2017 Free as a Butterfly It is with sad hearts and love that we announce the passing of Emma (Blan) MacDonald (Humby) on Monday, February 6, 2017. Emma was born in Sydney on July 23, 1924, to the late Hezekiah and Annie Jane (Russell) Humby, Whitney Pier, Sydney. She is survived by her sister, Noreen (George) Jackson, Sydney; her children, Sylvia (late Leonard) Heath, Northside East Bay, Linda (Reg) Murray, Sydney, Baxter (Marie), Hammonds Plains, N. S. and Jim, Sydney. Also survived by 14 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and one great-great grandson; a number of nephews, nieces and cousins, as well as her favorite “buddy” Cape Breton Kelly. Mom married our dad, Gilbert Wesley MacDonald on September 2, 1943, in Sydney and moved to Gabarus, where they lived for nearly 50 years, before moving back to Sydney. Prior to moving back to Sydney, she was a member of Zion Wesley United Church, Gabarus, where she was an active member of the UCW and the church choir. She was a homemaker for many years and her greatest passion was knitting, crocheting and doing embroidery work. Mom spent many years volunteering with Cape Breton Regional Hospital Auxiliary, Club 55, Mira Stitch makers, knitting for the IWK and her church and she enjoyed her Wednesday afternoons at the United Protestant Church of Sydney River Dinner Club. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband; son, Gilbert; daughter, Emma (Vernon) Murray, N.B. and also her siblings, Herb, Sam, Eli and Baxter. Mom was a member of the United Protestant Church of Sydney River. Visitation will be held at Sydney Memorial Chapel, 49 Welton St., Sydney on Wednesday, February 8 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A funeral service will be held in the chapel on Thursday, February 9 at 2 p.m., with Rev. Dana Feltmate officiating. Interment in Lakeview Cemetery, Gabarus, at a later date. Family flowers only. ELIZA CHRISTENA DIXON (FITZGERALD) Born: February 16th, 1936 Passed on: February 5th, 2017 It is with heavy hearts and great sadness that we announce the passing of our Mom today. Eliza Christena (Fitzgerald) Dixon, 80, passed away peacefully in her home, with her loving family by her side on Sunday, February 5, 2017. Born in White Point on February 16, 1936, she was a daughter of the late Emery and Mary (MacIntosh) Fitzgerald. At the age of 18 she was married. She became the mother of seven children who she devoted her life to. Eliza was a hardworking fisherman’s wife who ran the household. She took great care of her family. Eliza lived her life devoted and centered towards her family. She was a strong hearted woman, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Known as Nanny to her grandkids, she always had cookies in her cupboard and chocolate milk in the fridge. Her love for them all will never be forgotten. She took pride in each of them. Eliza held a special bond with her son John, who was always by her side. Some of Eliza’s hobbies included playing cards and Bingo nights. She always enjoyed both. You could always rely on her for a good laugh and witty remarks. She spent many hours enjoying word searches and puzzle books. Eliza was also a member of CWL for 63 years. Eliza will be missed deeply by her sons, Nelson (Lisa), John, Junior (Ann Marie), Todd (Angie); daughters, Amarlis ‘Muggins’, Marie (Jerry) Briand, Mary (Glenn) Fricker; 18 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; her sisters; Peggy Purdy, Cape North, Doris (Walt) Fraser, Pleasant Bay, Joyce (Scott) Brown, Dingwall; and five brothers; John, Timmy, Sydney, Hughie ,Daryl (Pam )Dingwall. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, William Daniel; son, Daniel Francis; step-mother Mary (Barron) Fitzgerald; sisters, Marie Dixon and Joan MacEachern; brother, Angus Fitzgerald; a special son-in-law, Richard MacDonald, and great-grandson, Richard Gerald MacDonald. A special thank you to the doctors, nurses and home care workers who provided care to Eliza. In honouring Eliza’s wishes, cremation has taken place. A funeral mass will be held at St. Joseph’s Church, Dingwall, 2 p.m. Thursday February 9, 2017, with Fr. Jake Andrea officiating. FRANCIS PAUL SIROIS Passed in: NORTH SYDNEY, Nova Scotia Passed on: February 6th, 2017 Francis passed away peacefully at his home in North Sydney with his loving son at his side on Monday, February 6, 2017, at the age of 68. Francis is survived by his children, Paul (Caralee) and Céline (Tom); his four grandchildren, Suzanne, Mariette, Katherine and Lincoln; the mother of his children, Margaret Price; his siblings, André (Maisie), Jean-Marc (Linda), Leopold (Joanne), Bernard (Mary), Stella-Marie (Blair) and Roseline (Don). His nieces, nephew, grandnieces and grandnephew will miss Uncle Francis at the annual get-together. Francis was predeceased by his parents, Roger and Mariette. He will be remembered as a brilliant and reflective man, for his mischievous humour, his non-judgmental outlook of people and his legendary enthusiasm for golf. As the son of a mariner, his curiosity and love of travel took him to all corners of the world where his contributions in the fields of nuclear physics, electrical engineering and environmental sciences, along with memories of his friendship, work ethic and volunteerism, will be lasting.
