Born in Roseburn, Inverness County on April 12, 1919, he was the son of the late Lewis Archibald and Flora Mary (MacKinnon) Murray. Peter was a person with incredible faith, and took great enjoyment from the fellowship of his church family. He enjoyed traveling to many conferences and meetings in Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Newfoundland. Peter attended the Berwick United Church Camp for more than 30 years and it was the highlight of his summer. He felt privileged to serve his church in various positions over the years including, Sunday school teacher, official board, honorary elder, St. Andrews’s men’s club, Maritime Conference representative, session member and Sydney United Church Brotherhood group. He was a faithful member of St. Andrews United Church up until its amalgamation and continued as a member of the United Heritage Church. Peter moved to Sydney in the forties from his family farm in Big Brook, Cape Breton and worked in Sydney for many years. He served in the Seaman’s Club in Sydney, as well as various organizations during his time in Sydney. While at the Cove Guest Home, he was the resident council president. He worked in janitorial duties for the R.C.M.P., as well as medical services and the Department of Public Works. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his older brother, Sgt. John James Murray, who was killed in battle during WWII on April 4, 1945; sister, Dolena Margaret Murray (January 24, 1918 - March 18, 2014); adopted brother, John Ward; and brother-in-law, Peter Alexander MacLachlan (Oct 18, 1917 - May 17, 1974). Peter is survived by his sister, Josie MacLachlan, West Bay Center; nephew, James (Darlene) MacLachlan, Smith Falls, Ont.; niece, Florence MacLachlan, Truro; and nephew, Archie (Paula) MacLachlan, Port Hawkesbury. He was a grand uncle to Aaron MacLachlan, West Bay, Brianna Tremblay, Edmonton, Josie Marie MacLachlan and Lauren MacLachlan, Toronto. The family would like to thank the staff at the Cove Guest Home for the great care and compassion given to Peter over the past few years. Thank you, as well, to the many, many, many friends that visited Peter in his apartment and at the Cove Guest Home. He appreciated each and every visit. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Sydney Memorial Chapel, Sydney, N.S. Funeral service from United Heritage Church on Saturday, March 4 at 2 p.m., with Rev. Rosemary Godin officiating. There will be no visitation, but a fellowship after the funeral in the church hall. Interment at a later date in the Princeville United Church Cemetery. JOSEPH MARTIN SUTHERLAND Passed in: EVANSTON, Nova Scotia Passed on: February 23rd, 2017 Joseph Martin Sutherland, 89 of St. Peters died February 23, 2017 in Strait Richmond Hospital, Evanston. Joe was a World War II Merchant Marine veteran and a proud member of Royal Canadian Legion Branch 47, St. Peters. He was a longtime fan of the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles and there wasn’t a storm that would not prevent him from missing a game. A generous and community minded man, he will be remembered as always ready to lend a hand and his time to raise money for any worthy cause or person in need. Joe spent much time on the shore, where anyone was welcomed to share his catch. He is survived by his wife, Beryl; sons, Michael (Sandra Landry), Andrew (Elizabeth Burke) all of St. Peters; daughter, Heather Sutherland, Halifax and daughter-in-law, Dawn Hollohan, Sydney; grandchildren, Byron Sutherland, Vancouver, Andy King, River Bourgeois, Alexis Sutherland, Calgary, Josie Sutherland, Sydney, Shelby Sutherland, Ottawa, Tyler Sutherland, Seattle and Tara MacAulay, St. Peters. Joe was predeceased by his mother, Catherine Sutherland and son, Timothy. Martha Stevens Passed on: February 20th, 2017 Martha Veronica Stevens suddenly passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on Monday, February 20, 2017 at the V.G. Hospital, Halifax. Veronica was blessed with an extra seven years of life after her liver transplant, which she was very grateful for and used those years to enjoy life and spend time with her family. Veronica was the daughter of the late Andrew Joseph and Dorothy (Sylliboy) Stevens. She was a member of Holy Family parish, Eskasoni. During the summer months, Martha would travel during the blueberry picking season to harvest blueberries. For many years she worked during the winter months at the Eskasoni Processing Plant in the Fisheries department. She was the undefeated gold medal champion of washer toss at the M’kmaq Summer Games. She could be described as a woman with a very charismatic and upbeat personality and never let life get her down in spite of health challenges over the years. Surviving is her wife of 35 years, Jacqueline and two daughters, Shelly and Margaret Jayne; six grandchildren, Anjelikah, Danika, August, Bronson, Edmund Jay and Jaylyn; eight siblings, Little Andy (Kim), Donna, Frankie, Raymond, Allister (Keena), Norman, Bobby, Mary Noella (Floyd), Gina and godchildren, Chantella, Frankie J’ij, AJ Floyd, JD and Edmund Jay. Martha was predeceased by her nephew, Jacob Stevens. Visitation will begin after 7 p.m. on Sunday, February 26 at the family residence 31 Burdock Lane, Eskasoni. Gerard Phillip MacKinnon New Waterford With heavy hearts we announce the passing of our dear father, brother, son and loving partner Gerard Phillip MacKinnon, age 53 yrs, after a courageous battle with cancer. Gerard passed away peacefully on Friday, February 24, 2017, at home surrounded by his loving family and friends. Growing up in New Waterford, NS, Gerard was the son of Carol (Hawco) and the late Phillip MacKinnon. He was known for his love of sports, especially the Toronto Maple Leafs, as well as his great sense of humour and strong work ethic. He had a passion for carpentry and will be greatly missed by his colleagues and friends at MECO. He is survived by his loving partner, Lisa Delaney, son, Jonathan (Melissa), Daughter, Shelby (Mike, Lisa’s children, Kyle, Alisha and Cody, mother Carol, sister Karen (Rob) Bourque, brother, Richard (Jennifer) MacKinnon, nieces, Sonia (Colton) Bagnell and Carolyn Bourque (Lawson) and his special little buddies, Emmett, Reece and Gizmo. He will also be missed greatly by his numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and close friends. As per Gerard’s wishes, cremation has taken place and there will be no visitation. A chapel service will take place on Monday, February 27, 2017, at 11 am in the funeral home chapel with Fr Norman McPhee officiating. Burial will be held in Mount Carmel Cemetery followed by a luncheon at the parish hall, convent Street, all are welcome.
