Our father was a much loved and respected man in Westmount and beyond. Our father was a military man through and through and began serving his country in 1968. He later joined the Airborne and was a paratrooper who made over 300 jumps. 14 years after that he joined the construction engineers, and later 1CEU, where he made his decision to retire from the military and move back "home". Even though he was retired that didn't keep him still. For the next 20 years he was a park supervisor at Two Rivers Wildlife Park, a job he thoroughly enjoyed. He was also the Vice President and bar chairman at Branch 126, Westmount Legion. For 20 years he was also involved greatly with the Westmount Volunteer Fire department, where he served as their training officer. Our father was an avid hunter, fisher, and trapper, the ultimate woodsman. He was the strongest man we've ever know and the best grampy our children could have asked for. He was predeceased by the love of his love, his wife, Maureen and his parents, Vince and Rose. He is survived by his three children, Michelle, Joshua (Sara), and Melanie (Shaun); grandchildren, Sarah, Caleb, Jocelyn (Mike), Owen, Frankie, Molly, Miss Em and his little buddy, James (Jam) also great-grandson, Jaxen. Our father will be waked from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. on Tuesday, February 14th at the SW Chant & Son Funeral Home, 564 Alexandra St., Sydney. VINCE RIGBY Passed on: February 7th, 2017 It is with heavy hearts and great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Vince Rigby on February 7th, 2017 at the age of 52. Vince is survived by his wife, Sandra (Campbell) and his proud, loving son, Jacob Rigby (Miranda Cantwell). By his parents, Bernard and Carol Rigby of Scotchtown; one sister, Obeline MacPherson (Clint) of New Waterford. Vince was predeceased by his both sets of grandparents. His Father and Mother -in-law, Gwen and Peter Campbell, Sydney. Vince’s nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews, sister-in-laws and brother-in-laws will miss Uncle Vinny at any family get-togethers. Vince was a Veteran of the Canadian Forces serving over 20 years, in Canada, Cyprus, Germany, Croatia and Bosnia. He was a Welder by trade which took him to numerous job sites in Canada and the US. Vince was a founding member of Marijuana for Trauma, Veterans Helping Veterans, Sydney, a member of The UN Veterans Group and a coaching member of Football Cape Breton. Vince will be remembered as having a legendary enthusiasm for his son Jacob, Veteran concerns, camping, fishing, motorcycles, the New England Patriots and his dog Brady. His curiosity and love of travel took him all over the world. Visitation for Mr. Rigby will be held Monday, February 13th between 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. A Mass will be held February 14, 2017, 10 a.m. at Holy Redeemer Church officiated by Father Paul Murphy. KEITH DOLHANTY KEARNEY Born In: NEW WATERFORD, Nova Scotia Born: December 8th, 1954 Passed in: SYDNEY, Nova Scotia Passed on: February 9th, 2017 It is with heartfelt sadness we, the family announce the passing Keith Dolhanty Kearney, age 62 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital on Feb. 9, 2017 surrounded by his loving family. Keith was a loving son, brother and uncle. Keith was born in New Waterford on Dec. 8, 1954. He is survived by his loving mother, Greta Kearney; sisters, Margaret Beaton and Alana (Sid) Oliver; sister-in-law, Alvina Kearney; his only nephew, Sid Jr. (Patricia); nieces, Kristen (godchild), Danielle. Jennifer, Kim (godchild) (Donnie), Allana (Robert) and Raylene; grandnephews, Austin and Clark Oliver; grandniece, Ruby Hartlin; a very special friend, Margie MacDonald; godsons, Shane MacDonald and Allen MacQueen. He began his career in life as a sheet metal fabricator. After years of doing this, he made the switch to Devco. Lastly, he tried his hand at work out west followed by his retirement. Keith had many favorite pastimes, one was horses. He was the happiest when spending time with his baby Tre Tre Grande, she could put a sparkle in his eyes. He was also a great gardener, vegetables first, flowers second. Plenty of neighbors on Cameron’s Lane, along with family had tomatoes and cukes all summer. He knew where the great fishing holes were too. Many a tale he would tell with Sid Jr. He could take a piece of wood and create a very interesting masterpiece. This he loved doing with his brother Wayne as they build things together, Wayne sanded and Keith stained, what a pair. That’s all his nieces and nephew had to say “can you build” and there it was. They have memories of him in their own homes now. Keith was predeceased by his father, Allan Kearney; brother, Wayne and brother-in-law, Tommy Beaton. A celebration of Keith’s life will be at McLellan Brothers Funeral Home, 3183 Plummer Ave., New Waterford, 902-862-7500 on Sunday, Feb. 12, 2017 at 1 p.m. with Deacon Leo Penny officiating. A light lunch will be served at Army & Navy following the service. Burial will be held at a later date in Forrest Haven Cemetery. SISTER ANNA BEATON Passed on: February 8th, 2017 Sister Anna Beaton, 92, formerly Sister Donalda Maria, a Sister of St. Martha of Antigonish died at Bethany Motherhouse, on Wednesday, February 8, 2017. She was in the 72nd year of her religious life. Born in Inverness, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, Sister Anna was the daughter of the late Donald Duncan and Mary Margaret (MacIntyre) Beaton of Inverness, N.S. Sister Anna entered the Sisters of St. Martha on February 15, 1944, pronounced her first vows on February 15, 1946, and her final vows on August 15, 1949. Sister ministered in the area of household services for most of her life, and spent several years as Sacristan at St. Francis Xavier University in Antigonish. She served in household services in Antigonish at Bethany, the Coady International Institute, St. Martha’s Convent, House of Hope, Xavier Community, Faustina Community, and Marian Community; in Cape Breton at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Glace Bay, and Little Flower Institute, Sydney; Mineral Springs Hospital in Banff, AB, and St. Martha’s Catholic Center, Boston, MA, USA. She spent one year in a Renewal Program at Dover, MA. in 1991/92, and was Local Leader in her community 1985/87. Besides her parents, Sister Anna was predeceased by four of her sisters, Sister Dolena, CSM, Sarah, Mary Agnes Beaton, Kaye Kennedy and two brothers, John Duncan and John Angus. She is survived by one sister, Mary Michael Pyne, So. Portland, ME, USA. She also has several nieces and nephews who have been devoted to Sister Anna and she to them. Sister Anna loved the Scottish Gaelic language and music. She could certainly get her feet moving to any rhythm and dance steps, inviting all to join her. The remains will be resting at Bethany beginning on Wednesday, February 15th at 1:15 p.m. A Celebration of Vigil will be held on the same evening at 7:30 p.m. Liturgy of Christian burial will take place on Thursday, February 16th at 2 p.m. in Bethany Chapel. LOIS EVANGELINE MATHESON Born In: SOUTH BAR, Nova Scotia Passed on: February 9th, 2017 It is with great sadness that the family of Lois Evangeline Matheson (86) announce her passing. Lois departed peacefully on February 9, 2017, surrounded by the immense love of her family. Born in South Bar, Cape Breton, she was the daughter of the late Sarah and Donald Morrison. She was a loving wife of the late Donald Matheson and an amazing mother to Diane Gwynn (Lester), Donna LeBlanc (Gerald), Bobby Matheson and Doug Matheson (Leslie). Lois was a fun-loving and devoted grandmother and great-grandmother to Mark Gwynn (Lindsay) and Allison Shea (James and Abigail). She was a loving sister to Esther Jessome (late Sam) and is predeceased by brothers, George Morrison (Helen) and Gerald Morrison. Lois is also survived by many nieces and nephews. Lois will be remembered for her wonderfully uplifting spirit and her unwavering positive attitude and outlook. She enjoyed playing bridge, going to movies, pot luck dinners with friends and spending time with family. Lois was a member of the United Baptist Church, a devoted volunteer at Kiwanis Children Cardiac Clinic (26 years) and a former member of the Louisburg Chapter IODE (28 years). Her family sends a heartfelt thank you to her devoted friends. Family are grateful for the care she received from her doctors, the palliative care team (VG-7A) and the very kind staff at Melville Gardens. Cremation will take place under the direction of T.J. Tracey Cremation and Burial Specialists, Bedford (902) 835-4212. A family interment at Hardwood Hill Cemetery will be held in the summer of 2017, date to be announced.
