Margaret MacKillop - CND - 102 yrs Joseph Stephen “Joe” MacDonald - 58 yrs Bernadette (Nee Reid) Perin Passed on: February 24th, 2017 It is with much sadness and love that we announce the passing of Bernadette Perin. Bernie peacefully passed away with her loving family by her side on Friday, February 24, 2017, at Maple Hill Manor; her home for the past 16 years. Born in Glace Bay, she was the daughter of the late Hugh and Elizabeth (MacNeil) Reid. Bernie worked as a housekeeper at St. Michael’s glebe house, River Ryan for several years. She also worked at the GI Plant and the lunch counter at Woolworth’s until her retirement. She was a very caring, loving mom and nanny; always ready to help when needed. She was also a great cook and baker and had a passion for reading and bowling. She was the president of the local bowling league for several years up until 1999. Bernie will be sadly missed by her only child, son, David (Hectorine), New Waterford; grandchildren, Tammy Perin (John), Tom Perin (Amanda); great-grandchildren, Jillian and Cole Perin, all of Calgary. She is also survived by brothers, Frank (Mary) Reid, Baddeck and Joe Reid, Ontario; brother in-law, Ray Hines and numerous nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, she was also predeceased by a daughter-in-law, Caroline (MacEachern) Perin; sisters, Margaret “Peggy” Anthony, Mary (Raymond) MacDonald, Agnes Hines, Ruth MacIssac, Donna (Jimmie) Higgins and brother, Roddie Reid. In honouring Moms wishes there will be no visitation or funeral service. Interment will be at a later date. Cremation has taken place under the care and direction of V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith Street, New Waterford. No words can truly express our sincere appreciation for the loving care provided to Mom by all of the staff at Maple Hill Manor. Margaret MacKillop, CND Passed on: February 25th, 2017 Sister Margaret MacKillop died peacefully on Saturday, February 25, 2017, at the CND Health Care Centre, Sydney. Born in South West Ridge, Mabou, NS, on May 15, 1914, she was the daughter of the late Finlay and Anna Belle (Chisholm) MacKillop. She entered the Congregation of Notre Dame in 1933 and made profession in August, 1935. Upon profession, Sister Margaret began what would be a lengthy career as a high school teacher, ministering for 23 years in the Sydney area. She then served as principal and local community leader for the next 6 years in St. John’s convent, New Glasgow. After several years as Provincial Bursar for the Congregation, Margaret returned to the classroom, teaching in Iona and Mabou. Upon retirement from the school system Margaret began a ‘second’ career in Religious Education and Pastoral Ministry which took her to Larry’s River, NS, Evansburg, AB, Chatham, NB, Sydney Mines and Mabou. During those many years, Margaret proved herself to be an excellent teacher and administrator, as well as a dedicated member of her religious congregation. In 2009, Sister Margaret moved to our assisted living facility at Holy Redeemer Convent, Whitney Pier. In 2011, her health declining, Margaret entered the CND Health Care Center, where she continued her ministry of prayer for the dedicated care givers who so lovingly ministered to her. To all of them we are deeply grateful. Sister Margaret was the last surviving member of her immediate family. She was predeceased by her sister, Lillian, CND and her brothers, Alex Rory, Duncan and Colin. She is survived by several nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews whom she loved dearly. Visitation for Sister Margaret will be held in St. Mary’s Church, Mabou, Tuesday, February 28, at 1 p.m. Liturgy of Christian burial will take place at 2 p.m. with Rev. Bernard MacDonald officiating. Interment will be in St. Mary’s Parish Cemetery, Mabou. Online condolences may be sent to www.twcurry.com JOSEPH STEPHEN MACDONALD Born In: NEW WATERFORD, Nova Scotia Born: May 2nd, 1958 Passed in: Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed on: February 11th, 2017 Joseph Stephen MacDonald, 58, died suddenly at his home in Halifax, N.S. on February 11, 2017. Joe was born on May 2, 1958 in New Waterford, Cape Breton. Joe lived in Inverness for several years where he was involved in the music scene as a bass player and travelled all over Cape Breton Island with Jerry MacDaniels. Since his days in Inverness, he moved to Halifax where he spent the remaining 30 years playing with numerous bands. He is survived by his mother, Mary 'Minnie' MacDonald, New Waterford; four sisters, Cindy Latham, Sydney, Lynn Hudson, Georgia, Karen MacDonald with partner, Spencer Clulee, Halifax and Kelli Lee, Calgary; daughter, Heather MacDonald, Toronto; nephew, Darrick Richardson, Halifax; four nieces, Lindsay Latham, North Sydney, Britiany Hudson, Georgia, Taylor and Courtney MacLellan, North Sydney; grandchildren, Aidan and Lucas McDonald, Toronto and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. He is preceded in death by his father, Joseph Stephen MacDonald Senior and nephew, Daniel Spencer Richardson, New Waterford. There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place under the care and direction of V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford. A private service for family will be held in the funeral home chapel on Tuesday, Feb. 28, 2017, at 1 p.m. with Deacon Leo Penny officiating. Burial will follow in St. Agnes Cemetery, New Waterford.
