MacDonald - 85 yrs ELIZABETH "BETTY" ANN SOMERS Passed on: February 6th, 2017 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved mother and grandmother, Betty Somers. Betty passed away on Monday, February 6, 2017, surrounded by her family. The daughter of the late Percy and Leah (Hines) Lordly, Betty was born in 1936 and raised in Sydney, NS. A dedicated nurse for 40 years, she was a graduate of Victoria General Hospital, City of London (England) Maternity Hospital, and Dalhousie University and was a Clinical Instructor at St. Martha’s Hospital. She was a Public Health Nurse in Halifax as well as a VON nurse for the Cape Breton region until she devoted her career to the Case Room at St. Rita’s Hospital, Sydney. She raised her five children in Sydney with unconditional love and devotion. Betty was a genuine, lovely woman, parent and friend, with sparkling eyes and a smile that warmed your heart. She was a voracious reader and could often be found with either a great book, or The New York Times Crossword puzzle, and a hot cup of tea. She loved staying active and was notorious for her daily walks. Her grandchildren brought her great joy, and she never missed the chance to watch their sporting and school events. She spent her last remaining years being cared for by her loving son, Danny, who treated her like royalty. She is survived by her sons, Bill (Nancy) Somers, Dartmouth and Dan Somers, Sydney; daughters, Bertha (Gary) Moore, Dartmouth; Jenny (Gary) MacLeod and Leah (Mark) Voutier, Sydney. Nana/Ninny is also survived by seven grandchildren, whom she adored, Caitlan, Jessica and Gary MacLeod, Erin and Billy Somers, Andrew and Leah Moore; sister, Mary Lou Van Den Broek; brother, Winston (Donna) Lordly and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her late husband, William Somers; brother, Eric Lordly; sisters, Helen (Bob) Stevens and Josephine Lordly, and nephew, Peter Van Den Broek. Visitation for Mrs. Somers will be held one hour before the funeral service which will take place at 11 a.m. on Friday, February 10, 2017 at T.W.Curry Parkview Chapel with Fr. Bill Burke officiating. Online condolences may be sent by visiting www.twcurry.com <http://www.twcurry.com/> Magdalene Lantha (Samantha) Jardine Born In: Alder Point Born: February 16th, 1922 Passed in: North Sydney Passed on: February 8th, 2017 It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our dear Mother Magdalene Iantha (Samantha) Jardine on February 8, 2017 at Taigh Solas in the Northside General Hospital, North Sydney surrounded by her loving family. Born in Alder Point on February 16, 1922 she was the daughter of the late Martin and Rozzlean (Dugas) Simon. Mom had strong faith; she was a member of St. Anne Church, Alder Point. In her early years she worked in Halifax, eventually coming back home to care for her mother and brother. After the passing of her mother, she went to work for Bluenose Fisheries in Alder Point as Forelady over the trimmers and packers. Magdalene’s family meant everything to her. She loved baking for them, especially her chocolate cake and apple pies. She loved music and was an avid fiddle player. Many times you would find her outside feeding the squirrels and birds and tending to her many flowers. She is survived by her daughters, Debbie (Jackie) Jobes, Alder Point and Brenda Cleveland, North Sydney. Along with grandchildren, Debbie ( Dwayne) MacLean , Alder Point and Paula Cleveland, Mira. Great-grandchildren, Brooklyn and Riley MacLean, Destiny, Andrew, Dewey ,Carter and Richard Cleveland. She is also survived by brothers, Cecil (Sonny) (Gail) Simon, Sydney Mines. Besides her parents, Magdalene was predeceased by her husband, Cecil in 1977, and precious grandson, John T. in 1989. Along with sisters, Doris Laffin, Melinda Campbell, and Agnes; brothers, Basil, Barry, Joe and Amadee. Special Thanks to all of those who showed compassion to our dear Mom over the years at Taigh Solas and a special Thanks to Dr. Michel and Louise McKeough. There will be no visitation. A funeral Mass to celebrate Magdalene’s life will be held on Saturday February 11, 2017 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Ann Church , Alder Point, with Fr. Peter McLeod officiating. Sister Theresa Kurtz Passed on: February 7th, 2017 Sister Theresa Kurtz, formerly Sister Edmund Marie, a Sister of St. Martha of Antigonish, died at Bethany, the Motherhouse, on February 7, 2017. Sister Theresa was 101 years of age and in the 82nd year of her religious life. Born in Burdett, Alberta, she was one of eight children of the late Matthias and Theresa (Bauman) Kurtz. Sister entered the Congregation of the Sisters of St. Martha on November 8, 1933, pronounced her first vows on August 24, 1935 and her perpetual profession of vows on August 24, 1938. After her profession of vows, Sister served in parish work and later in the field of education. She served many years as well in pastoral care of the sick and in spiritual direction. She was a graduate of the Nova Scotia Provincial Normal College and St. F. X. University. Sister Theresa qualified as a teacher of art and music following studies at the Nova Scotia College of Art, in Halifax and the Toronto Conservatory of Music. In 1973 she obtained an Advanced Diploma in Clinical Pastoral Studies and in 1975, she graduated with a degree in Master of Divinity, both from Andover Newton Theological School and the University of Massachusetts. In Nova Scotia, besides the Motherhouse, Sister Theresa served at St. Martha’s Convent in Antigonish, Little Flower Institute, Bras d’Dor, Our Lady of Fatima Convent, Heatherton, St. Charles Convent, Dominion, Teachers’ Residence, Eskasoni and Star of the Sea Convent, Canso. In Western Canada, she served in Alberta at Mount Carmel Convent, Canmore, St. Alphonsus Convent, Blairmore, St. Michael’s General Hospital, St. Monica Convent and Martha Centre, Lethbridge and in Saskatchewan at Martha House, Regina. Even with the loss of her eyesight, Sister Theresa greeted people with a smile and warm welcome. She delighted in listening to people read to her from novels, articles and in particular from Scripture. Sister Theresa was the last surviving member of her family. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by sisters, Velma Bohna, Rose Roth, Margaret Kotkas and Sister Magdalena, CSM and brothers, Joseph, Matt and Elias. The remains will be resting at Bethany, beginning Sunday, February 12th at 1:15 p.m., where a Celebration of Vigil will be held on the same evening at 7:30. Liturgy of Christian Burial will take place on Monday, February 13th at 2 p.m. in Bethany chapel. Arrangements are under the direction of MacIsaac Funeral Home, 61 Pleasant St., Antigonish. Andrew Chesal Born In: Scotchtown Born: December 20th, 1928 Passed in: Sydney Passed on: February 8th, 2017 After a long battle with cancer, we sadly announce the passing of Andrew Chesal on February 8, 2017 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital. Andrew was born on December 20, 1928 and raised in Scotchtown, Cape Breton, NS. He married his childhood sweetheart Joyce (White) in 1952. Andrew joined the Navy in 1951 and then took early leave to join the Army in 1954. With six month old son Andy in tow, they were shipped out to Chilliwack BC, where son Kevin and daughter Marie were later born. Andrew completed his HD Mechanic ticket and went on to work for Finning Tractor. Finning moved the family to Cranbrook, Nelson, Kamloops and back to Cranbrook where he then took early retirement. In 1991 they moved to Barriere so Joyce and Marie could be closer. Joyce passed from cancer in 2000 and this left a hole in his heart. In 2002 he was lucky enough to find love again with second wife Shirley (Aucoin), he moved back to Scotchtown to be with her, where they still reside near the old family homestead. Andrew was in his element when he was in the woods fishing, hunting or just camping. He was a mechanic, musician and skilled carpenter. He was a quiet man, handsome and debonair, a thinker but he had a mischievous side. He was a devoted family man and loved his children and grandchildren. He is survived by wife, Shirley; sons, Andy and Kevin; daughter, Marie (Ken) Downing; grandchildren, Brodey, Alysha and Kyle; sister, Betty Tatlock; brother, Richard (Sandy); sisters-in-law, Jean and Laura; many nieces and nephews, also Shirley’s children, Deborah, Jerry, Peter and Pauline, who were very dear to him. Andrew is pre-deceased by his first wife, Joyce (White); father, John; mother, Ina; brothers, Sonny (John), Mark, Rob; sister, Jean (Raddin) and brother-in-law, Norman Tatlock. Cremation has taken place. There will be a chapel service held on February 11, 2017 at 2:30 in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Duncan Roach officiating. Burial in Union Grove Cemetery. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of McLellan Brothers Funeral Home, 3183 Plummer Ave., New Waterford, 902-862-7500. Andrew will be greatly missed by his family and friends, rest in peace!
