Jessie MacNeil Born: May 11th, 1926 Passed on: February 8th, 2017 The family of Mary Jessie MacNeil sadly announces her peaceful passing at Miners’ Memorial Manor on February 18, 2017. Jessie was a former resident of Sydney and always proudly announced that she was from the Shipyard. She was a special lady and a dear friend to many people. Jessie tended to make a lasting impression on people and her dry wit was appreciated by many. Jessie was born on May 11, 1926 to John R. and Mary Jane (MacLean) MacNeil. Surviving are her daughter, Janet (Rick) MacKinnon and their children, Ardell and Ian MacKinnon; her son, Blair (Linda MacDow) and their children, Johnathan, Zachary and Rebecca MacNeil. Besides her parents, Jessie was predeceased by her beloved husband, John J. MacNeil in 1954; brothers, Leo, Roy, Howard and Alfred MacNeil; brothers-in-law, Benny and Duncan MacNeil and sisters-in-law, Elizabeth and Catherine MacNeil all of Big Pond. Surviving are her sisters-in-law, Margie (Howard), Margie (Leo) and Deanna (Alfred) MacNeil. Also surviving are many nieces and nephews. Jessie was a woman of deep faith and was a former member of Saint Anthony Daniel Parish. She served on the Parish Council and was a former member of the CWL. Teaching was her chosen career and it was one she enjoyed for 35 years. Many students benefitted from her dedication and her ability to bring out the best in each student. Jessie has often been described as ‘the best teacher I ever had’ by many former students. She was an active member of the Sydney Local of the NSTU serving on several committees. Miners’ Memorial Manor staff gave Jessie excellent care during the two and on half years she lived there and it became like a second home to her. No words can truly express our sincere appreciation and thankfulness for the care you provided for her. Special thanks to Dr. Kohlsmith for his competent and compassionate service to Jessie and her family. There will be no visitation for Mrs. MacNeil. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Friday, February 24 at Our Lady of Fatima Church with Rev. Bill Burke officiating. DIANE GILFOY (TRAPP) Born In: GLACE BAY, Nova Scotia Passed in: SYDNEY, Nova Scotia Passed on: February 16th, 2017 We regret to announce the passing of our mother Diane (Trapp) Gilfoy, on Thursday February 16, 2017 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, with her family by her side. Born in Glace Bay she was the daughter of the late Henry and Christina (McLean) Trapp. Diane was a member of Homeville Woman’s Institute and had a great love for Bingo, Elvis, Dollar Stores, Knitting and Crafts. She also enjoyed serving at Teas, Benefits, Country Markets in Port Morien and spending time with her grandchildren. She is survived by sons, Bradley (Leah) of ON, and Raymond of Homeville; daughters, Mary Rose (Chris) of Donkin and Cathy of Glace Bay; brothers, Jimmy (Brenda) and Steve (Sylvia) all of Glace Bay; sisters, Sandra (Tony), Barb MacIntyre (Charlie) all of Glace Bay, Joan Yensen and Gloria Forbes all of BC; grandchildren, Christopher, Sean, Aaron, Jessica, Bethany, Brandi and Heather and many nieces and nephews. Besides her parents Diane was predeceased by her brother, Henry Trapp; sister, Mary Morrison and special friend, Phyllis Peach. Cremation has taken place under the direction of T.J. CHARLES QUANN QUANN, Charles We, the family of the late Charles Thomas Quann regret to announce his death at the Glace Bay Hospital on February 21, 2017. Charles was born Feb 24, 1931 to Michael and Jessica Quann. Charles is survived by his loving wife of 29 years Margaret (Pomeroy); his 3 children, Linda MacLeod (Les); sons, Michael and Shaun. His stepdaughters, Helen Desveaux (Kevin) and Charlotte Kealy (Glenn). Charles is also survived by many grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was predeceased by his parents and his step-son Phonse Young. Cremation has taken place; there will be no visitation as per Charles’s request. A memorial service will be held at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses on Reserve St. Glace Bay, Saturday February 25, 2 p.m. Kenneth MacIsaac Passed in: North Sydney Passed on: February 19th, 2017 It is with deep sadness we announce the peaceful passing of Kenneth ‘Kenny’ McIsaac, age 78, loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle and friend on Sunday, February 19, 2017 at the Northside Community Guest Home, where he resided. Born in Sydney, Kenny was the son of the late William J. and Margaret O. (Snow) McIsaac. Kenny attended Xavier Junior College in Sydney and was a graduate of Normal College in Truro and St. F.X. University in Antigonish. Throughout his teaching career he taught elementary, junior high and high school and later as a Guidance Counselor with the Northside Victoria School Board and until his retirement, as a Psychometrist in Special Education. Kenny was a faithful member of St. Joseph Church in North Sydney where he served as Lector for many years. He was a member of the Father William B. Kiely Council of the Knights of Columbus in North Sydney. For many years Kenny was involved in the Big Brothers program on the Northside. Kenny was involved in sports before and while he was teaching on the Northside and was a valued member of the Northside Minor Hockey Association. Kenny used his experience as a Guidance Counselor in his coaching of hockey teams over the years where he was very successful in winning many championships. The Junior Golf Program was another one of Kenny’s pet projects. As a well-known member of Seaview Golf and Country Club, Kenny was successful as a coach and a highly skilled player. Kenny is survived by his loving wife, Roberta (Belmore) McIsaac, North Sydney; his daughter, Laura (Carl) Jessome, Sydney; his son, Neil (Kelly) McIsaac, Bedford; his five grandchildren, Tyler (Danielle), Victoria and Kristen Jessome and Griffin and Ruby Ann McIsaac and also his great-granddaughter, Leighton Jessome. Also surviving is his brother, Alan (Carol) McIsaac, Langley, BC and sister, Mary Elizabeth McIsaac, Hamilton; his four nieces, Laura Leslie, Katie Kennedy, Anne Manner, Lynn Manner and grandniece, Alexandra Manner. The family would like to thank Dr. John Kirkpatrick and staff at the Northside Community Guest Home who went above and beyond with Kenny’s care. Visitation for Kenny will be held from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. on Wednesday, February 22, 2017, in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant Street, North Sydney. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Thursday at St. Joseph Church, North Sydney with Rev. Patrick O’Neill officiating. Burial in Holy Cross Cemetery, North Sydney at a later date.
