Mary was born in Greensville, Ontario September 27, 1923 and grew up in nearby Capreol, the daughter of Dr. John and Azel (Green) MacLean. Married to Ben O’Neill in 1946, they moved to Cape Breton immediately, where she quickly became the island’s most fervent first ‘paying’ job was with lawyer Elizabeth Cusack. Next, Mary as personal assistant to Father Greg MacLeod at the College of Cape Breton until the two of them, together, co-founded New Dawn. Granny was a proud, interesting grandparent, as ready to laugh and chat with the younger generation as she was to debate politics with them and the older family members. Her dining room table was the site of holiday dinners, bridge, tarabish and board games, crossword competitions and endless entertainment, in which she revelled. Music, stories, and endless food supporter. Mother of seven children, Mary still found time to read three to five books a week while also seeing to the many needs of her family. She was an active member of St. Joseph’s CWL and church choir, a tireless worker for the NDP, locally, provincially and federally, for which she was inducted as a Life member.Mary was significantly involved in the Royal Commission on the Status of Women efforts. As more time was available for community work, Mary was a founding member of New Dawn, serving on their board and the Homemakers board until poor health led to her retirement at the age of eighty. Her made every gathering her personal version of a ceildh. Mary is survived by seven children, Tim (Lois), Jim, Greg (Hazel), David (DeeDee), Janet (George) Robinson, Patricia (James) Munroe and Kevin; twelve grandchildren, Kiley, Andrew, Kate, Daniel Riley, Claire (Roach), Virginia (Brand), Cameron, Liam, Seamus, Grace, Kevin and Aidan Munroe; eight great-grandchildren, Jonathan and Margaret, Sam, Charlotte, Myles and Madeline (Roach), Nolan and Owen (Brand). Mary is predeceased by her husband, Ben; her three sisters, Jess, Joan, Margaret and brother, John; her beloved grandson, Adam, and her daughter-in-law, Star (LeVatte) O’Neill The family expresses its profound gratitude to the staff of McGillivray Guest Home, where Mary spent her final four years. Their caring and support were invaluable. Thanks, also to the staff of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, with special thanks to the An Cala Palliative Care personnel. Visitation will be held at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel on George Street, Sydney, Sunday, March 12, from 6-9 p.m., with service at that location on Monday, March 13, at 4 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to McGillivray guest Home, the An Cala Palliative care unit of CBRH or Doctors without Borders. THELMA JOAN BOWES Born: February 3rd, 1932 Passed on: March 9th, 2017 We, the family of Thelma Joan Bowes, regret to announce her passing on Thursday, March 9, 2017, at the age of 85. Born February 3, 1932, she was a daughter of the late Hilda (Gardiner). For most of her life, Joan was a homemaker, but in her younger years, worked as a clerk at Fred’s Creamery and Crowells Department Store. Joan was a member of the former Trinity United Church, Whitney Pier, where she was involved with the Bethany Unit and more recently, a member of United Heritage Church, Sydney. Joan is survived by her sons, Robert and Alex, South Bar and brother, James “Tut”, Sydney. She was predeceased by her husband, John; sisters, Mary and Marg and brothers, Henry “Sonny” and George “Babe”. Visitation will take place at Sydney Memorial Chapel on Monday, March 13, 2017 from 2-4 & 7-9 p.m. Funeral service will be held at United Heritage Church on Tuesday, March 14, 2017 at 2 p.m., with Rev. Rosemary Godin officiating. Interment in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens. Memorials may be made to the SPCA. MARY MACKAY Born In: POINT MICHAUD Passed in: ST. PETERS, Nova Scotia Passed on: March 9th, 2017 Mary, age 95, Grand River, passed away Thursday March 9, 2017, peacefully at the Richmond Villa, St. Peters, NS. Born in Point Michaud, she was the daughter of the late Michael Raney and Mary Agnes (Gracie). She was the last surviving member of her immediate family, being predeceased by all eight siblings, Johnny Raney, Agnes Matheson, Martha Gracie, Betty Dube, Mickey Raney, Joe Raney, Kittie Raney and Richard Raney. She was also predeceased by her husband, Duncan MacKay (the love of her life), after being married for only 12 short years. We hope they are reunited and watching over all of us once again. She is survived by her son, Sandy (Melissa), Airdrie, Alberta; and her daughter, Mary Agnes (Ed), Halifax Nova Scotia. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Mark and Ashley Moar and Duncan and Connor MacKay. For those of you who knew Mary, her grandchildren were her pride and joy and she spoiled them every chance she had. Visitation will be held at the Grand River Presbyterian Church from 7-9 p.m. on Sunday, March 12, 2017. Funeral service at 1 p.m. on Monday, March 13, 2017 with Rev. Corrie Stewart officiating. Reception to follow in the Grand River Fire Hall. Family flowers only. Donations in memory may be made to the Canadian Heart and Stroke Foundation or any charity. The family would like to thank Mary’s special friends, Judy and Sandy Morrison who have been friends of the family for many years but in the last 8 years (since Mary’s stroke) have been there for Mary and her family every day. The family would also like to thank the staff of the Richmond Villa for the kind and compassionate care our mother received while in their care as well as their compassion for her family during this difficult time.
