Born in Sydney, Alan was the proud grandson of the legendary Grand Chief, Gabriel Sylliboy. Alan is survived by his wife of 40 years, Juliana. He also leaves behind the light and loves of his life, Maria, Jason (Michelle), Annie (Gussie) and Tim (Nel); three very special people in his life who he loved just as much as his own children, Bucky (Tracy), Lana (Luii) and Liam; his grandchildren, Peter, Stephanie, Landon, Justin, Owen, Trinity, Trishelle, Shaelynn, Eternity, Kirkland, Jonah, Jada, Mya, Misha, Aaron, Ryan, Dawson, Allie, Angie and Avery; four great-grandchildren, Caitlin, Jaiden, Kenny and Alayah. Alan is also survived by his sisters, Julena, Ducy (Bob); special sister, Murdena Marshall; brothers, John Wayne, John Alan and Seven; his godchildren whom he loved very much, Karen, Bernadette, Lana, Felix, Majestic, John Basque, Shaelynn and Carlyle who greeted his godfather in eternity. Alan had numerous nieces and nephews, all very special to him. Alan was predeceased by his parents, Charles Andrew and Annie Mae (Sylliboy) Bernard; brothers, Freddy, Charles “Chuckie”, Lawrence “Lunch”, Walter and Carl. Alan had many friends, all of them very special to him. He was known anywhere he went. A special gratitude from us to Kenny Basque, Jerome Basque, Patsy Larade and Robert Boudreau and so many more, all very special to him. We would like to thank Dr. Carlyle Chow for his friendship and great care he took for Alan. To the surgical team, ICU nurses at St. Martha’s we want to thank you from the bottom of our hearts. All of you went above and beyond in caring for Alan, we will never forget you. In honour of our Husband, Father, brother, grandfather, uncle, godfather, cousin and friend, please donate blood to the Red Cross, as it was the blood of donors that kept him alive. Visitation will be after 1 p.m. Sunday in the Multi Purpose Building, 160 Reservation Rd., We’koqma’q. Funeral mass will be 11 a.m. Tuesday from Saint Kateri Parish Holy Trinity Roman Catholic Church, We’koqma’q with Father Paul Abbass officiating. Burial in the parish cemetery at a later date. Elizabeth Axworthy Passed on: March 8th, 2017 Mrs. Elizabeth Axworthy, 81, of Florence, died suddenly on Wednesday, March 8, 2017 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, NS. Born in Sydney Mines, she was the daughter of the late James MacIntyre and the late Annie (MacLean) MacIntyre. She was a member of 083 Florence Legion and the Sydney Mines Pensioners Club. Also she ran Pat’s Irving, on Florence corner, with her late husband for 13 years up until his illness. She is survived by her two loving daughters, Patricia (Patsy), at home and Denise (David), North Sydney; three grandchildren, Davie (Dee), Brian and Nicholas and great-grandchild, Brooklyn. Her grandchildren were her pride and joy. Also surviving are sisters, Naomi MacDonald, Margie Wall, Tena Gracie, Sharon Garnier; brothers, James MacIntyre and Billy MacIntyre. She was predeceased by her loving husband, Patrick (Pat) Axworthy and also by brothers, Norman, Kenny and sisters, Catherine and Effie. Visitation for the late Elizabeth Axworthy will be held from 12-2 p.m. on Saturday, March 11, 2017 at Fillmore & Whitman Funeral Home, 10 Clyde Ave. Sydney Mines. JOHN MACLEAN Born In: SYDNEY Born: June 9th, 1935 Passed in: SYDNEY Passed on: March 8th, 2017 John MacLean passed away March 8, 2017 at the Cove Guest Home, Sydney. Born June 9, 1935 in Sydney he was the son of the late Norman and Sarah (MacAulay) MacLean. John worked at many Canadian Force bases across Canada. He served in Germany with the United Nations and in the Middle East. He is survived by brothers, Norman (Lillian), Sydney, Gordon, Sydney, William, Fort Smith, Northwest Territories and Sister, Beth Parsons, Stephenville, Newfoundland. John was predeceased by his birth mother, Bessie (McKeen) MacLean. Cremation has taken place and there will be a Memorial service for John at a later date. Eoin Cossitt Born: June 28th, 1932 Passed on: March 6th, 2017 With heartfelt sadness the family of Eoin Cossitt announces his passing on Monday, March 6, 2017, at the age of 84. Eoin was born in Sydney on June 28, 1932 and was the son of Bert and Margaret (MacDougall) Cossitt. Eoin grew up on his family’s homestead at 190 Herbert St., Sydney. A bona fide Man-of-Cape-Breton, he was a year-round outdoorsman, hunter, trapper, paddler, camper and hiker. In addition to his love of nature, Eoin was a passionate skater. In the words of fellow skater, Keith MacDonald, ‘He was known as the most proficient skater on the Cape Breton adult skating circuit, a wizard of speed and agility who always did his best skating with a woman on his arm.’ Eoin was a career welder and a member of the International Brotherhood of Boilermakers, Local 73. Eoin is survived by son, David; sisters, Alta Vaughan, Sarah MacLean, Virginia Chezenko, Marina Anderson, Louise MacLennan and Myrtle Matheson (Allan); brother, Gus (Evelyn) and many cousins, nieces and nephews. He will be greatly missed by his dear friend, Margaret MacMullin. Eoin was predeceased by his brother, George (Bernice) and brothers-in-law, George Vaughan, Kenneth MacLean, Donnie Anderson, Fred Chezenko and Ward MacLennan. He was also predeceased by his lifelong friend and fellow adventurer, Wally Martell. We would like to thank the staff of the Northside Community Guest Home and both, the Cape Breton Regional and Northside General Hospitals, for their care and compassion during his stays, especially Dr. Peter Poulos, Dr. Elizabeth MacCormick and Dr. Steven MacDougall. Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held Saturday, March 11 from 12 noon until the time of the funeral service at 2 p.m., all in Sydney Memorial Chapel, 49 Welton St., Sydney, with Reverend Rosemary Godin officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to World Vision Canada, 1 World Drive, Mississagua, Ontario, L5T 2Y4, or a charity of your choice. Over the years, Eoin was a passionate supporter and brought change to the lives of many children who needed it.
