With thousands of documents in its database, just about anybody can find out about their ancestors, says association president Norm Macdonald. “We have so much in our database that other genealogy websites are using the information we have for their database,” said Macdonald. The website, which was created in 2003, has more than 1,700 active members. “We have at least one member in all provinces and territories,” said Macdonald. He said the group should soon complete one of its biggest projects — photographing every headstone in all of Cape Breton’s cemeteries. “We like to have this information so people can see where their family was buried and learn a bit more about them,” said Macdonald, who expects they will have finished documenting the tombstones in the final cemetery by the end of the year. The association’s help centre at the Lyceum on 225 George St. in Sydney is now also open Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. There is no fee and it is available to anyone who wishes to visit. Memberships to access the Cape Breton Genealogy and Historical Association online database can be purchased at www.cbgen.org.
