She was born June 29th, 1924, in Inverness County, daughter of the late Danny Sandy and Jessie Agnes (Cameron) MacNeil of Mabou. She is survived by daughters Carolyn Anne Pickering (Dale) and Estelle (Patrick Kilhenny); son Donald (Janice); grandchildren Jodi Ann (Clayton Moore), Tara Leigh, Neil (Leanne Jones), and Nikki (Chris Walton); special niece Anne (Small) and Rory MacNeil. She is also survived by her brother Eddie and sisters Maud (Omer) Campbell and Catherine MacDonald and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband John William (Jack) Small (54 years married); daughter Janie, brothers Alex, Neil, Joseph (Joe), and Edward and sisters Annie Mae Rankin-MacDonald, Rebecca MacNeil, Betty MacDonald, and Belle Campbell. Peggy lived, with more fun and good laughs than heartaches, in Dartmouth, Iona, Westmount, and Mabou throughout her adult life. She cherished her grandchildren, nieces, nephews, friends, and numerous family pets deeply. She loved tea and sweets and a good game of cards and was a proud member of the MacNeil Clan, doing her best to abide by the Clan motto Buaidh No Bas, or Conquer or Die. In her lifetime, she grew to be her own prototype, a unique character with a great attitude about life. She passed along to her children a love of quality cooking and the values of humour, caring for family, and had a deep sense of friendship, making new friends in her later years in Shannex in Halifax. Peggy rested in St. Mary’s Church, Mabou on Monday, February 27th, from where funeral Mass was offered at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. Bernie MacDonald presided. Burial will take place at a later date in Holy Rosary Cemetery, Westmount. Memorial donations can be made to your local animal shelters (Peggy loved animals) or to L’Arche Cape Breton. MacEACHERN Catherine Margaret "Kaye" MacEachern, age 86, Judique, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, February 22nd, 2017, in the Strait Richmond Hospital, Evanston, surrounded by her cousins and friends. She was a woman of strong faith and lots of determination. Everyone saw how gracefully she handled her hardships and how she made everyone around her smile and remain upbeat. Kaye loved her life in Judique and always attended community events. She was predeceased by her parents Allan and Katie (MacInnis) MacEachern; brothers Alec, John, and Allan; and sister Mary. Kaye is survived by her brother Angus, Inverness; brother-in-law John Connors, Windsor, ON; and sister-in-law, Helen MacEachern, Oshawa, ON; along with many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Kaye will rest from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 1st, in the Community Room of the Judique Fire Hall. Funeral Mass will be held on Thursday, March 2nd, at 2:00 p.m. from St. Andrew's Roman Catholic Church, Judique with Father Allan MacMillan officiating. Burial in the parish cemetery at a later date. Donations in honour of Kaye may be made to St. Andrew's Parish Cemetery Fund or to the Judique Volunteer Fire Department. GILLIS The death occurred after a brave and courageous battle with cancer, in Inverness Consolidated Memorial Hospital on February 25th, 2017, of Donald Bernard Gillis of Port Hood, aged 78 years. Donnie is now in Heaven with Marie, his beloved wife of 52 years. He was a caring father of Johnny, Rodney (Ellen), Lisa (Brian), Danny, and Mindy (Jeremy). He was an adored Papa to Brett, Logan, Marli, Jake, Jamie, Bailee, Maria, Maddie, and Jack. Donnie was the son of the late John S. and Katie Eugene (MacIsaac) Gillis of Hawthorne. He is survived by siblings Mary (Detroit), Elaine (Bedford), Marge (Judique), Archie (Judique), and Helen (Toronto). He is predeceased by siblings Neil, John, Anne Marie, Archie, Catherine, Christina, John, and Genevieve. Many nieces and nephews will miss their uncle Bananahead. One of his first jobs was driving a truck where he would pop in to see the love of his life at Hart’s in Mabou. Donnie and Marie worked in Massachusetts where they were married in 1965 and also lived in Detroit, Michigan, where Donnie worked as a truck driver. They relocated to the homestead in Hawthorne in 1971 where he was hired at the then named Nova Scotia Forest Industries. He retired from the pulp mill after 25 years. Donnie was an avid horse lover whose enthusiasm for harness racing took him and Marie all over the Maritimes. Donnie put Hawthorne Road on the map by naming his horses after many family members and neighbours. He was a die-hard fan of hockey as he never missed any of his sons’ hockey games or Montreal games, but he could also be found wherever his sons were driving horses. Many boisterous card games were played over the years with and against Marie, and their many friends. Donnie rested at the Port Hood Funeral Home until Wednesday, March 1st, which would have been his 79th birthday and then on to St. Peter’s Parish Church for funeral Mass. Visiting hours were held on Tuesday, February 28th. Interment followed. Family flowers only. In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Dad may be made to the Inverness Hospital Palliative Care Unit and St. Peter’s Parish Cemetery. Born April 27th, 1926, in Margaree Forks, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, to Virginia (nee Doyle) and Michael Tompkins. Myles Chrysostom Tompkins entered into rest peacefully in his 91st year at Hamilton General Hospital on Tuesday, January 24th, 2017. Chris was Pauline’s cherished husband since 1951. He leaves his legacy of generosity, strength, selflessness, and unconditional love to his children Janice (George) Kwasney (both deceased), Patrick (Patricia), Peter, Susan (Dean) Curtis, Shaun (Wendy), Michael, and Sheila (Oliver) Nogard and to his grandchildren Lindsay, Hayley, and Taylor Tompkins, Ryan and Sarah Kwasney, Luke, Rachel and Eric Nogard, and Sean and Emma Curtis. Loving brother to Bernard (Joanna) (both deceased), Laffin (deceased) (Patricia), Patrick (deceased), Richard (deceased), and Margaret (Jerry – deceased) Kulchyckyj. Survived by many nieces and nephews. Brother-in-law to Patrick and Peter Hynes (both deceased). Chris was a long-time member of the Knights of Columbus (Council 1454), and the Royal Canadian Legion (Branch 163). The family received friends at P.X. Dermody Funeral Home on Friday, January 27th, 2017 with prayers following. A funeral Mass was offered at St. Eugene’s Parish in Hamilton on Saturday, January 28th, 2017.
