    3. Cape Breton Deaths September 23, 2008 Tuesday Howard D. McPhee 62, Sydney - Howard D. McPhee, 62, of Sydney, passed away Sunday, Sept. 21, 2008, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney. Born in Sydney, he was the son of the late Norman and Leona (DeMaer) MacPhee. He was a member of Sacred Heart parish, Sydney. Howard was a retired steelworker. He will be greatly missed by his wife, Theresa (Parker) of 42 years; a daughter, Norma, Toronto; a son, Daniel (Victoria), Petawawa, Ont.; sisters, Beth (Ron) MacNeil, Beaver Cove, Denise (George) MacLean, Lower Sackville; brothers, Fred, Calgary, Donnie (Sue), South Bar, Dan, Fort St. John, B.C.; grandchildren, Crystal, Robbie, Lucas, Hannah; and many beloved nieces and nephews. Visitation for the late Mr. McPhee will take place Wednesday, Sept. 24 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel. Funeral mass will be celebrated Thursday at 10 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church with Rev. Anthony O'Connor officiating. Donations may be made to the Canadian Diabetes Association or charity of choice. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ George Toney 71, Eskasoni - George Toney, 71, of Eskasoni, passed away Saturday, Sept. 20, 2008, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, surrounded by his loving family. Born in Whycocomagh, he was the son of the late Frank and Mary (Googoo) Toney. He was member of Holy Family parish, Eskasoni. For many years, George worked as an oyster fisherman, cabinetmaker, landscaper and on the pipeline. He worked as a dozer operator with Francis Construction on projects in St. Peter's, Nyanza, Oxford, Newfoundland and Eskasoni. He was a band councillor for Eskasoni in 1964-65. During the summer months, he went to Maine to harvest blueberries and potatoes and work in the fish plant there. He is survived by his wife, Emily (Johnson) of 48 years; daughters, Virginia (Virick), Eskasoni, Cornelia (Albert) Cabot, Eskasoni, Sonya (James) Toney, Jean Johnson, Eskasoni; sons, George Frank 'GT' (Amy), Whycocomagh, Stuart James (Sasha Mae), Eskasoni, Lawrence Gerard Toney (Cheryl), Eskasoni; by sister, Mary Theresa Toney-Taylor, Toronto; brother, Peter Joseph Toney, Edmonton; grandchildren, Philip 'PJ', Colton, Rebecca, Virickson, Dirick, Kylie, Albert Jr. 'Al', Emerson, Kelly Ann, Terrvanah, Karzen, Dylan, Raegan, Evander, Lara, Jolita, Mary C., Cody; godchildren, Maddy Dennis and Ralcie Ann Johnson, both of Eskasoni; and by numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by parents, godparents, Mrs. Katrine Paul and the late Leo Morris, sisters, Mary Toney, Guida Gallagher, Angeline Hobbs, brothers, John Leonard Toney and Lawrence Toney. Visitation for the late Mr. Toney will be held Thursday evening, Sept. 25, 2008, at the family home, 57 George St., Eskasoni. Funeral arrangements entrusted to twcurryparkviewchapel@ns.sympatico.ca. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Paul Francis Beaton Sydney/Yellowknife 1969-2008 - It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our son, Paul, on Sept. 17, 2008, after a courageous battle with cancer. Paul, youngest son of Mae (Binns) and Allister 'Bo' Beaton of Westmount, was born in Sydney, Cape Breton, Feb. 21, 1969. He graduated from Riverview High School and UCCB. Paul was active in many sports including baseball, soccer and football, both as a player and later as a coach. Paul spent most of his working life in the food business initially with Sobeys, then SuperValu locally. Following brief stints with the CFIA and later in business with his brother, Al; Paul, returned to the food business with Loblaws in Yellowknife. Paul's greatest joy in life was as husband to Pam (Weeks) and father to their four children, Connor (10), Delaney (8), Anghus (3) and Sophie (1). Paul is also survived by his maternal grandmother, Jane Coady and his siblings, Ed (Jan), Sydney, Nancy, Halifax, Terry Chasse, Westmount, Al (Daphne), Richmond, Va., Mary Jane (Daniel) Morrison, Westmount. Paul was a man of passionately held convictions, who lived his life with strength, courage, integrity and great concern for the welfare of those close to him. As a celebration of his life and indomitable spirit, there will be a memorial service, Saturday, Oct. 4, 2008, at 2 p.m. at Holy Rosary Church in Westmount, followed by a reception at 3 p.m. at Westmount legion. Life, Laugh, Love; Faith, Family, Friends; Paul." ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Lawrence Vincent Marsh Dec. 5, 1930-Sept. 21, 2008 Mill Creek - Lawrence Marsh, 77, of Mill Creek, passed away peacefully on the morning of Sept. 21, 2008, at home, with his family and loved ones by his side. He was the son of the late John and Emma (Jessome) Marsh. He was a member of St. Joseph parish, Bras d'Or. Lawrence grew up in Mill Creek and spent many of his younger years sailing, then moved on to the coal mines (Devco), where he spent 28 years before retiring. He was an avid dart and card player and enjoyed spending time in his garden. He is survived by his loving wife and best friend, Bernadette (Forrest) Marsh; five sons, Kevin, Russell (Samantha), Lawrence (Jennifer), Keith, Troy (Joanne) and five daughters, Sheila (Tommy), Loretta (Eric), Wanda (Ron), Marlene (Rick) and Louise. He is also survived by his brothers, Theodore (Olive), Sylvester (Ella Mae), Louis (Norma), Peter (Betty) and sisters, Emiline Turner and Margaret Hamilton; 19 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren that he loved dearly. He was predeceased by sisters, Mary, Regis, Marie, Marcella, Evelyn and brothers Wilfred, James, Gerald and Tommy. There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place under the care and direction of J.M. Jobes Funeral Home, 635 Main St., Sydney Mines. A funeral mass will be celebrated at St. Joseph Church in Bras d'Or, Thursday, Sept. 25, 2008, at 10:30 a.m. with Fr. Peter MacLeod officiating. 'Bill' Holmes 80, Sydney - William Archibald Holmes, 80, of Sydney, passed away Sunday, Sept. 21, 2008, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Born in Truro, he was the eldest son of the late William Andrew and Amanda (Williams) Holmes of Pictou County. After attending Mount Allison University, Bill began his life long career with the radio and television industry. His work took him all across Canada and to other places, among them, Bermuda, Southern Rhodesia and Italy for the 1954 Winter Olympics. He is survived by his wife, the former Antoinette 'Toni' Odei (born in Watertown, N.Y.); a sister, June Milligan, Tatamagouche; a brother, James, Dartmouth; as well as a nephew, two nieces and many grandnieces and nephews. There will be no visitation for the late Mr. Holmes. Respecting the family wishes, there will be no funeral service at present time. Memorial donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or charity of choice. Arrangements are entrusted to T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel. He will be sadly missed by his family and many friends. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Ada MacKillop - It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Ada MacKillop, Monday, Sept. 22, 2008. Born in Middle River, Victoria County, she was the daughter of the late Norman D. and Muria (MacLeod) MacCharles, Upper Middle River. Ada was a graduate (1948) of Glace Bay General Hospital and practised her nursing profession in the Inverness and Baddeck hospitals. She was a member of Farquharson Memorial Presbyterian Church, Middle River, and a lifelong supporter of the Progressive Conservative Party of Canada. She is survived by her husband, Murdock, and son, John, both of Baddeck Bay; cousins, Florence (Maynard Burke), Muria (Neil MacVicar), Margaret (Bill Sullivan), Laura MacDonald, Christene (Allison MacLeod), Fred MacLeod, John MacDonald (Joan) and Sandy A.E. 'Peggy' MacLeod. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by a brother in infancy and brother, John A. MacCharles. She was also predeceased by cousins, Alice Nicholson, Wilson MacDonald, Fred Ross, Eveline MacDonald, Isabelle Hamilton and John MacLeod. There will be no visitation at Ada's request. Cremation to take place. The family committal service will be conducted by Rev. Lloyd Murdock in Highland Cemetery, Baddeck Bay, at 2 p.m., Sept. 24. The family will receive friends and family in the main foyer of St. Mary's Church from 1 p.m. until funeral time at 2 p.m. Burial at St. Mary's Cemetery, Maple Avenue, Glace Bay. Reception to follow at St. Mary's hall.
