Cape Breton Deaths September 20, 2008 Saturday Earl Dawe 1930 - 2008 Marion Bridge - Earl Dawe, age 78, of Marion Bridge passed away peacefully on Thursday, Sept. 18, 2008 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney. Born in Glace Bay, he was the son of the late Cyril and Maude (Stevens) Dawe. Earl was employed with Devco for many years, retiring in 1988. He enjoyed fishing, gardening and walking. Earl is survived by his wife, Jeanette (Voyez) Dawe; son, Earl and daughter, Della (Gary) Comer; four grandsons; two great-grandchildren. Also, surviving are numerous nieces and nephews and best friend, Dave MacDonald. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by bothers and sisters. In honouring Earl's request, there will be no visitation or service. Cremation has taken place under the care and direction of V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. An interment will be held 2 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 22, 2008 at Forest Haven Memorial Gardens, Sydney. Online condolences to the Dawe Family are available at www.vjmcgillivray.net ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Gordon Alexander MacLellan 1921 - 2008 Sydney Mines - Gordon Alexander MacLellan passed away peacefully on September 19, 2008, at the Northside General Hospital. Born in Sydney Mines on October 3, 1921, he was the son of the late John and Alice (Cox) MacLellan. A lifelong resident of Sydney Mines, Gordon spent his late teen years as a miner at Princess Colliery. After several years as a salesman for MacDonald's Wholesale and Sydney Wholesale, he operated his own businesses. MacLellan's Wholesale in Sydney Mines and MacLean's Wholesale in New Waterford during the 1960s and 1970s. Later he served until his retirement, as the co-ordinator of the Neighbourhood Improvement (NIP) and the Residential Assistance (RAP) programs for the Town of Sydney Mines. As a young man, he was very active in swimming, baseball and basketball and coached school hockey and girls basketball teams. Gordon was a former president of the Cape Breton Shrine Club, a charter member of the Northside Kiwanis Golden K, a board member of the Kinsmen Day Care Centre, and a former vice-president of the Sydney Mines Seniors and Pensioners Club. He was a member of Grace Fellowship Church. A faithful and avid supporter of his community, Gordon was active an member in many facets of government and politics. He is best remembered as the Mayor of Sydney Mines, serving two terms, 1967-1970 and 1971-1973. During his second term of office, he was also chairman of the Northside-Victoria Amalgamated School Board. Gordon is survived and lovingly remembered by his two daughters, Marsha (Clifford) Smith, Sydney Mines and Thalia, Sydney; by sister, Adrienne (Neil) Patterson, Sydney Mines and brothers, Earle (Marjorie), Dartmouth and Dr. D. Lorne (Irene), Sydney Mines; three grandchildren, Troy (Julie) Smith, T.J. (Andrea) Smith, Fredericton, N.B. and Tasha (Douglas) Gallant, Bedford, N.S. and five great grandchildren, Jacob and Jillian Smith, Alex and Abby Gallant and Eric Smith. He was predeceased by his wife, Tillie (Snow); son, Paul and brothers, Clyde and Douglas. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Fillmore and Whitman Funeral Home. There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place. Born in Sydney, he was the son of the late John Wilfred and Ethel Mae (Mercer) Clements. He was a member of Church of Christ the King. He was employed as commissioner at the Sydney City Hospital. He was a veteran of the Canadian Army where he served overseas. Wilfred enjoyed the outdoors and was an avid sports fisherman. Wilfred is survived by four sons, Wilfred Jr., John (Darlene), both of Sydney, John (Elaine), Weymouth, David (Maureen), Ottawa, and daughters, Pamela (Vince) Tutty Glace Bay, Debbie (Darren) Genge, Halifax, Linda Hibbert, Ontario, as well as his companion of four years, Dorothy Pinkston, Sydney. Wilfred is also survived by 15 grandchildren as well as 13 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Ina, Toronto, Carolyn, Oshawa, Ont., as well as one brother, Herbert (Jean Ellen), B.C. Besides his parents, Wilfred was predeceased by his wife, Jean Clements; his son, Timmothy; stepmother, Mary Legge; three brothers, Gerald, Stanley and John, as well as a sister, Loretta. Margaret grew up in New Waterford and after her marriage lived most of her life in Sydney, where she enjoyed many years skating with her husband, Donnie, on the rinks in Sydney. She was a former member of Trinity UCW, Whitney Pier and was an avid Tarabish and bridge player. She relished time spent with her grandchildren and especially enjoyed hosting them during vacations and holidays. Surviving are her sons, Gordon (Shaune), Liverpool, Douglas (Wilma) and Kenneth, both of Dartmouth; grandsons, Kirk, Scott, Iain, Stephan and Neil and granddaughters, Maggie and Emily; great- grandchildren, Rowan, Connor, Chloe, Gabriel and Tristan; special friends, Mary MacNeil and Marie Cecile LeLievre as well as several nephews and nieces. John Michael was a painter by trade who enjoyed all types of music, playing cards, and socializing with family and friends at his home. He was also known for his love of tinkering around cars. He enjoyed his last evening with his children close by. Paul was born in Sydney, Cape Breton. He graduated from U.C.C.B. and worked most of his life in the grocery industry between Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and the North. Paul loved his family and was devoted to their well being. Paul is survived by his wife, Pam; children, Connor (10), Delaney (8), Anghus (3) and Sophie (1); his maternal grandmother, Jane Coady; parents, Bo and Mae Beaton of Sydney; siblings Ed (Jan) Sydney, Nancy of Halifax, Terri of Sydney, Allie (Daphne) of Richmond, VA and MaryJane (Daniel) of Sydney. He is also survived by many neices and nephews. Paul would not want us to be sad but to celebrate his joy of life. Born in Victoria Mines, Nova Scotia, Jonna lived and worked in Kirkland Lake, Ont. for the past 35 years. She taught at Northern College and touched the hearts of those who knew her. Loving daughter of Eileen and the late John MacNeil. Loving sister of Maureen (Jim), Phillip (Jeanne-Mance), Janice (Charles), Scott (Margaret), David (Beverly) and Lorraine (Robert). Sullivan of Sharon, Massachusetts announce his sudden passing at Beth Israel Hospital in Boston, Mass. Born in New Waterford, he was the youngest son of the late Howard and Margaret (Cathcart) Sullivan. He received his education in New Waterford and later moved to the United States, where he served in the U.S. Air Force. He is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Jean (Mackie), formerly of Dominion; his children, Danette, Kerry Jean, Sean, Douglas and Daniel, their spouses; eight grandchildren; his sister, Agnes Sullivan of New Waterford and many nieces and nephews.
