Cape Breton Deaths September 08, 2008 Monday Joseph William Reid Sydney Mines Nov. 19, 1938-Sept. 7, 2008 - With heavy hearts we, the family, announce the passing of our dear husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and brother. Joe passed away at home on Sunday, Sept. 7, 2008, after a brief and courageous battle with cancer. Born in North Sydney, he was the son of the late Joseph E. Reid and Dorothy (Richards) Reid/Seymour. He was an active member of St. Pius X parish and a life member of the Kinsmen Association of Canada. He was known as a master craftsman in fine woodworking and wood carvings - most of which were given as gifts. He was also a gifted musician. His talents also included gardening and canvas painting in oils. He was well known for his keen sense of humour and his ability to put a smile on everyone's face. He was a gentle man. Joe is survived by his loving bride, the joy of his life for 48 years, Gloria (Ryan); and his pride and joy, his children, daughters, Jo-Ellen (Dale) Evans, Edmonton, Alta., Dawn (Stan) Brown, Natalie (Mike) Jessome, Sydney Mines; sons, Darrell (Connie), Sydney Mines and Joseph (Dawn), Florence; his grandchildren, Josh Evans, Caitlin and Reid Brown, Jenna, Colby and Jaiden Jessome, Joseph Reid and his great-grandson, Damien Evans. Also surviving are his sisters, Geraldine (Robert) MacKinnon, Port Hastings, Paulette (David) Powers, Sydney Mines, Florence (Richard) Murphy, North Sydney, Ruth (Richard) Rioux, Hamilton, Ont., Mary Lou Reid, Dawson Creek, B.C. and Johanna (Nelson) Scott, North Sydney; his brothers, Percy (Carol) Reid, Edmonton, Alta., Richard (Monique) Reid, Dartmouth, N.S., Gordon (Sherry) Seymour, Chester, N.S., David (Jeanie) Seymour, Bridgewater, N.S.; and his special niece and goddaughter, Margie (Ross) MacLeod, Sydney Mines. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his sister, Joan Pink. Visitation today (Monday) from 7-9 p.m. and Tuesday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in Francis Funeral Home, Sydney Mines. Mass of Christian Burial will take place Wednesday at 11 a.m. in St. Pius X Church with Fr. Hughie MacNeil and Fr. Joseph Arsenault officiating. Burial in St. Joseph's Cemetery. Expressions of sympathy may be sent to d.francis@ns.sympatico.ca. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Emma Theresa Currie 1929 - 2008 Glace Bay - It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Emma Currie, 79, of Phalen Road, Glace Bay. Emma passed away Saturday, Sept. 6, 2008, at the Glace Bay Health Care Complex. Born in Glace Bay she was the daughter of the late Alex J. and Mary (Gilday) Currie. Emma was a member of Holy Family Parish. She graduated from Normal College in 1949. She taught a total of 37 years and 160 days beginning in Benacadie, N.S. and also in Glace Bay, including Holy Cross, St. Anne's and spent most of her career at McKay's Corner Memorial teaching grades 5 and 6 while also serving as principal until her retirement in 1987. Emma was organist at Holy Family parish for more than 50 years. She also served as secretary for the CNIB Club in Glace Bay for over 40 years. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Emma will be sadly missed by who she would only call her own, Henry Marsh (Karen) and his daughter, Kortnie and son, Nathan. Also surviving are sisters-in-law, Kay Currie, Dartmouth, Edna Currie, London, Ont., and several nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, Emma was predeceased by brothers, Alfie, John and Duncan. Visitation for Emma Currie will be held Monday 7-9 p.m., Tuesday 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. A funeral mass will be celebrated 2 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 10 at Holy Family Church with Fr. Gerald Campbell officiating. Interment will be in the parish cemetery. Condolences to the Currie family will be received at www.vjmcgillivray.net. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Veronica MacLean Sept. 9, 1915 - Sept. 7, 2008 Boisdale - It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Veronica MacLean, formerly of North Sydney, in her 93rd year. Vonnie died peacefully at Kenwood Hall, Harbourstone, in Sydney, with family by her side. She was the daughter of the late J.J. and Margaret (MacNeil) MacInnis, of Sydney. She had been a 12-year resident of Parkview, Enriched Housing in North Sydney, following the death of her beloved husband, George F. MacLean, in 1995. Vonnie thrived on people and gatherings and especially loved when friends, family and their children would visit. She was the last of 'The Lasses of Campbell Street,' Sydney, and was never very far from the Scottish music and songs that she grew up with and loved so much. She is survived by her eight children, Margaret, (Fred MacDonald), Upper Port LaTour, N.S., Ronald, (Lorraine), Kingston, Ont., Joseph, Airdrie Alta., Rita (Frank Glogowski), Sydney Mines, Rhodena (Gerard O'Handley), Port Hawkesbury, George (Denise), Lower Sackville, Basil (Theresa), Seal Cove, N.L., Miriam (Lloyd Poirier), Lower Sackville; 29 grandchildren and 41 great-grandchildren; also by her sisters-in-law, Margaret MacLean and Norma MacInnis; longtime family member and friend, Lillie MacLean, as well as many nieces and nephews who visited her often. Besides her husband George F., she was predeceased by her sisters, Sr. Mary C. MacInnis CND, Rita Bryden, Agnes MacCormick, her brothers, Joseph Roy MacInnis, Dr. M.Vincent MacInnis, her grandson, Michael MacLean, and his mother, Sandra MacLean. The family would like to extend their special thanks to Vonnie's caregivers and friends of the last year and a half at Harbourstone, who made her stay very comfortable and happy. Visitation for Vonnie will be held in St. Andrew Catholic Church, Boisdale, on Tuesday from 7-9 p.m. and Wednesday from 9-11 a.m. The funeral mass will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. with Rev. Online condolences for the MacLean family may be sent to info@wjdooley.com. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ George Carruthers Tellum - It is with profound sorrow that Mrs. Peggy Tellum announces the passing of her beloved husband, George Carruthers Tellum, in QEII Health Sciences Centre on Sept. 4, 2008. Born in Joggins, Cumberland County, on July 20, 1921, he was the son of the late Josiah and Margaret (Carruthers) Tellum, who later moved to Sydney Mines, where George attended school. He graduated from Sydney Mines High School, where he was prominent in spots. With the outbreak of the Second World War, George and his friends enlisted with the 5th Field Company, Royal Canadian Engineers, 3rd Division. They served in England, France, Holland, Belgium and Germany. George possessed a great sense of humour and was famous for his 'one-liners.' Returning to Canada to civilian life, he was employed at the P.T. Edwards Naval Base Fire Department as fire chief, transferring to the Provincial Fire Marshal's Office as deputy fire marshal until his retirement in 1988. He is survived by his wife, Peggy; daughter, Peggy Arlenen Dessereau (Wayne), Cole Harbour; son, George (Marilyn), Antigonish; grandchildren, Chantal, Gillies, Craig, David; four great grandchildren and 19 step grandchildren. He was predeceased by his parents, first wife, Helen Kerr, sister, Doreen and son-in-law, Gillies Dessereau. Visitation will be held Monday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in J.A. Snow Funeral Home, Windsor Street, Halifax, where funeral service will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m., Rev. Blake Caldwell officiating. Interment will be held Thursday, Sept. 11 in Brookside Cemetery, Sydney Mines. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia.
