Cape Breton Deaths September 24, 2008 Wednesday Beatrice Catherine Walker 85, Glace Bay - It is with great sadness we announce the death of Beatrice Catherine Walker, 85 years of age, of 18 Concord St., Glace Bay, Tuesday, Sept. 23, 2008. Bea faced her death with the grace that characterized each and every day of her life. The last surviving member of the family of the late John and Margaret (MacDonald) Walker, she was predeceased by brother, Hugh and sisters, Mary and Eileen. She is survived by her adopted daughter, Teresa MacEachern, with whom she resided. Bea will be greatly missed by her extended family, most of whom reside in the Melford/Glendale area of Cape Breton, and her many friends, most particularly her lifelong friend, Mary MacEachern. Bea's home provided the warmest hospitality to friends and family, whether it be for holidays or for just dropping in. She worked in the coal company office for 44 years before retirement and was a lifetime member of St. Anne's parish, an active member of the CWL and the ladies choir. Visitation will take place at Curry's Funeral Home, 775 Main St., Glace Bay, Wednesday, Sept. 24, 2008, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass will be celebrated Thursday, Sept. 25, 2008, at 10 a.m. at St. Anne's Church with internment in the parish cemetery. A reception will follow at the family home on Concord Street. Donations may be made to the Palliative Care Foundation in Bea's name. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Philip John May July 26, 1921-Sept. 23, 2008 Bras d'Or/Glace Bay - It is with great sadness our family announces the passing of Philip May, on Tuesday, Sept. 23, 2008, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, in his 88th year. Born in Belloram, N.L., he was the son of the late Verena and Isaac May. Phil served with the Merchant Marine Navy and was a member of the Naval Vets, and Branch 19 of the Royal Canadian Legion, North Sydney. He worked at Stelco in Hamilton, Ont., for 32 years before retiring and returning to Little Bras d'Or. Phil was a loving and devoted father to Dave (Judy), Tarbot, Cape Breton, and Doug (Debbie), Hamilton, Ont.; cherished grandfather of Christopher, Michael, Bryan and Todd; great-grandfather to Gavin, Clark and Natasha. He is also survived by Ethel, Eileen, Pat, Queenie, Clarence and Norma. Phil will be sadly missed by Jackie, Alex, Elizabeth and Jacquelyn, and by the many other friends and family whose lives he touched in such a special way. He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Ethel (Young) May, sister, Dot and brother, Clarence. Visitation for Philip May will be held in the J.M. Born in Sydney, she was daughter of the late Isaac and Mary (Crane) Wilson. Mom lived most of her life in Sydney. She loved her home and backyard, enjoyed music and spending time with her family. For more than 25 years, she was an active member of the Sydney Club 55. She travelled with the rhythm band to entertain 'the old folks.' She participated in many activities at the Elms, and was known for her wonderful smile and pleasantness. Mom will be greatly missed by her family, son, George, Sydney; daughters, Joyce (Cyril) Brown, Fall River, Diane (David) Andrews, Dartmouth, Linda (Larry) Meisner, Truro; 10 grandchildren, Glenn, Gary, Nancy, Sheri (Brown), Tanya, Lori, Dave (Andrews), Shawn, Darren and Scott (Wadman) and 10 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, Walter (1968), brothers, Earl, Owen, Harry, Kenny, sister, Ethel. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held 2 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 25 at the S.W. Born in Balmoral, Richmond County, he was the son of the late Vernon and Katie Ann (MacNeil) Hill. A retired carpenter, he enjoyed spending time with family and friends, morning walks, playing cards and treasured all opportunities to meet people. He was a carefree spirit and loved life. Duncan is survived by his daughter, Donna (Larry) Green and son, Douglas (Kathy) Hill; his grandchildren, Shawn, Ainsley, Christopher, Anna Rae and Bradley; former wife, Dolena Hill; as well as his siblings, Shirley (Mike), Donald (Florence), Evelyn, Derrick (Darlene), David (Faye), William 'Nicky' (Vera) and George (Rose Marie) and several nieces and nephews. 'Bill' Holmes 80, Sydney - William Archibald Holmes, 80, of Sydney, passed away Sunday, Sept. 21, 2008, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Born in Truro, he was the eldest son of the late William Andrew and Amanda (Williams) Holmes of Pictou County. After attending Mount Allison University, Bill began his lifelong career with the radio and television industry. Bill was a member of C.A.B. (Canadian Association of Broadcasters), Atlantic Broadcaster Association, as well as Royal Canadian Yacht Club. His work took him all across Canada. He also worked and lived in other locations, among them, Bermuda, Southern Rhodesia and Italy for the 1954 Winter Olympics. Bill enjoyed travelling with his wife Toni during his retirement. He is survived by his wife, the former Antoinette 'Toni' Oddi (born in Watertown, N.Y.); a sister, June Milligan, Tatamagouche; a brother, James, Dartmouth; as well as a nephew, two nieces and many grandnieces and nephews. There will be no visitation for the late Mr. Holmes. Respecting the family wishes, there will be no funeral service at present time. Memorial donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, Loaves and Fishes or charity of choice. Arrangements are entrusted to T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel.
