Cape Breton Deaths September 03, 2008 Wednesday Dorothy Christina 'Dot' Avery 73, Canso, Guysborough County - Dorothy Christina 'Dot' Avery, 73, Canso, Guysborough County, died peacefully Sunday, Aug. 31, 2008, at home following a brief illness. Born in Canso, she was a daughter of Edna (Feltmate), Canso and the late John 'Jack' Bond. 'Dot' was a lifelong resident of Canso and worked for many years in the dietary department of Eastern Memorial Hospital. She was a member of Star of the Sea parish, Canso. 'Dot' was an avid traveller who fondly enjoyed trips with her family and friends to various locations. She also loved to crochet, which many people say was her greatest talent. Many of her creations have been donated to local fundraisers as prizes and gifts. She is survived by her daughter, Juanita MacPhee, Dartmouth; granddaughter, Wendy Avery (Jason Blinkhorn), South Side Boularderie; special friend and companion, Rob Greencorn; sisters, Stella (Joe) Rideout, Canso, Marion Dort, Hazel Hill, Catherine (Laurie) Phillips, Dartmouth, Myrna (Everett) Bouchie, Little Dover; brothers, Roland, Johnnie, Arnold, all of Canso; aunt, Jenny Grover, Bayfield; many nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by her husband, Emmett, brothers, Stanley, Ralph, Lloyd, infant sister, Mary, son-in-law, Leo MacPhee, brother-in-law, Nelson Dort, sister-in-law, Mary Bond. Visitation will be 2-4 and 7-9 p.m., today (Wednesday) in Dennis Haverstock Funeral Home, Canso. Funeral mass will be 11 a.m., Thursday in Star of the Sea Roman Catholic Church with Fr. Daniel Boudreau officiating. Burial in the parish cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to Star of the Sea Building Fund or the Canadian Cancer Society. Words of comfort may be forwarded to the family at www.haverstocks.com. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Jean (Smyth) Allen 84, Glace Bay - It is with deeply saddened hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved wife and mother, Jean Allen, on Sept. 1, 2008, at the New Waterford Consolidated Hospital, with her loving family by her side. Born in Belfast, Northern Ireland, she was the daughter of the late Herbert and Jean Smyth. Jean was a past member of LOBA. Smitty, as she was affectionately nicknamed by her husband was a beautiful Irish lady with a wee bit of Irish temper and a heart full of Irish wit and love. What she loved most in this world was to be surrounded by her family and it was this love and strength of the family circle that gently helped to ease her into the hands of God. Jean is survived by her husband, Everett; two daughters, Evelyn and Jeannie (Mel) Smith); one son, Herbert (Arlene) Allen; nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Jean was predeceased by cherished great-grandson, Eric Jobe and beloved son-in-law, Gerard MacGillivray. Visitation for the late Jean Allen will be held Thursday, Sept. 4, 2008, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at Patten Funeral Home & Chapel, 71 Union St., Glace Bay, 849-7520. Funeral service will be held Friday at 2 p.m. in the funeral home chapel, with Rev. Bob Lawther officiating. Interment will be in Forrest Haven Memorial Gardens, Sydney-Glace Bay Highway. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Stephen Mark MacMillan Jan. 22, 1961-Aug. 19, 2008 Austin, Tex./Sydney - It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Steve MacMillan in Austin, Tex., Aug. 19, 2008, at the age of 47. Born in Ottawa, he was the son of Raymond and Marion (Whitty) MacMillan. Steve was employed with Maskina Telecommunications in Austin, Tex., for the past 10 years. He had a love for animals and a passion for hockey and blues music and was an accomplished musician. Steve is survived by his wife, Shelly (Plumridge); children, Nicole and Matthew, both at home; parents, Raymond and Marion MacMillan, Alberta; sisters, Sindy (Roger) Bell, Texas, Colleen (Sean) Garrigan, Saskatchewan; brother, Tim, Ottawa; and several nieces and nephews. He will also be dearly missed by Heather and Tom Plumridge as he was the son they never had. Steve was predeceased by his maternal grandparents, Margaret and Jim Whitty and his paternal grandparents, Mary and Ted MacMillan. The family would like to thank Christopher House Hospice in Austin, Tex., for their amazing care in his last month. A celebration of Steve's life will be held at a later date. Rowe May 16, 1927-Aug. 31, 2008 - Fred passed away Sunday, Aug. 31, 2008, at the Richmond Villa Nursing Home in St. Peter's, where he received the very best of care. Fred was surrounded by people who loved him when he passed away. His great laugh and sense of humour will remain with us always. Fred was predeceased by his father, James Rowe, mother, the former Theresa Stoodley and brothers, Clarence, Willis, George and Eric. Fred was the last remaining member of his immediate family. He is survived by three nieces and three nephews. There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ William 'Bill' Hurd 1920-2008 - Much loved husband, father and grandfather died at St. Joseph's Lifecare Centre on Aug. 31, 2008. Bill is survived by his wife, Anita (nee White) and son, Paul (Mamie). His son, Allan predeceased him in 2001. Bill was proud of his five grandsons, Duncan, Cameron, Gavin, Jonas and Nigel. Born in Cape Breton, he was a veteran of the Second World War serving with the Cape Breton Highlanders unit. He was predeceased by his parents, Agnes and John Hurd, sisters, Margaret Lewis and Violet Crane and brothers, Albert and Kenneth. Survived by sisters, Lorraine ad Betty Hurd and Shirley (Norman) Fiander, all of North Sydney. A born salesman, Bill was the friendly breadman with Jackson's Bakeries Ltd. and later was employed with Brantford Packers Ltd. He was a member of the Commercial Travellers Organization for 57 years. For many years he enjoyed numerous hockey and scout activities with sons, Allan and Paul. In retirement, he volunteered with the Children's Aid Society and enjoyed bowling, curling and golfing. For the past eight years, Bill has been a resident at the John Noble Home for the St. Joseph's Lifecare Centre and received excellent care. To all doctors, nurses and the entire caregiving staff sincere appreciation. Cremation will take place and be followed by a private service. Proud Nana of Micheal and Sara Barr. Dear daughter of Joseph and Betty Sutherland of Cape Breton. Cherished sister of Joe, Keenan (Cheri) and Tanyia (Jim). Lifelong friend of Denise Brewer; 'Rocky' will also be remembered by many other relatives and friends in Ontario, Nova Scotia, Manitoba and sadly missed by her friends and patrons in Norwood.
