Cape Breton Deaths September 16, 2008 Tuesday Vera Ann Clements 1962 - 2008 - On Sept. 6, 2008, Alonzo 'Lonnie' and Sylvia (Strickland) Clements received news from overseas in Scotland of the passing of their cherished daughter Vera Ann. Born and raised in Glace Bay, Vera was a graduate of Morrison High School in 1980. She attended UCCB and attained her BACS in 1983. Throughout the years, Vera was a dedicated member and volunteer with Girl Guides of Canada. She was also part of the founding membership of AFTEC Society of Glace Bay and surrounding areas. Vera was also associated with the Elizabeth Fry Society. In 1986, Vera's compassion and ability to help others would take her overseas to Scotland, where she touched the hearts and lives of many appreciative people. She will be sadly missed by her many friends and co-workers in Scotland. Besides her parents, Vera is survived by her three brothers, Noel (Maureen), Shawn and Scott (Ann). Also survived by nieces, Nadine and Jennifer and nephew, Jeff. Many aunts, uncles and cousins are also left to mourn for Vera. In Scotland Vera is survived by her dear friend, June Panting and June's family. June's special son Gary, daughter Karen (Nicky) and Karen's children Nicky Jr. and Yasmine. Vera was predeceased by grandparents, Charles and Lily Clements, grandfather, Art Strickland and step-grandmother, Mary, grandmother, Nellie Copeland and step-grandfather, Dave Copeland. Born in Gabarus Lake, he was the son of the late Norman and Christina (MacIntyre) MacMullin. Tiger was employed by Devco in Caledonia and Number 26 mines where he retired from after 43 years. Papa John was well known and loved by all in the community. He was a member of St. Mary's Anglican Church, St. Mary's Social Club, and an honorary member of the Tower Road Volunteer Fire Department having served for 30 years as an active member. John is survived by his wife of 60 years, Doris; one daughter, Alice (Steve) Murphy; two sons, John and Greg; three grandchildren, Tracey, Bryne (Tammy) and Gregory; two great-grandchildren, Kenneth and Emmah. John is also survived by sister-in-law, Lola Videto; nephews, Jim and Doug Videto and a niece, Marilyn Simpson. John was predeceased by a brother, Donald and an infant son. Born in Sydney Mines, July 11, 1960, Darlene was the daughter of Marguerite (Harding) Brown and the late Wilfred Brown. Darlene took great pride and joy in being a wife and mother, and always thought of others before herself. Before her illness, she enjoyed camping, crafting, and sewing. Besides her mother, Marguerite, Darlene is survived by her loving husband, William 'Bicky' Cantwell; her daughters, Danielle, Alexandra and Katie; her sister, Rachael Brown, and her children, Alexander and Jaclyn LeBlanc; her brothers, Douglas and Robert; her mother-in-law, Jean Cantwell; a special aunt, Blanche Burton; her sisters-in-law, Al-jean (David) Taylor and their children, Angela and Leslie; Wilda (Donnie) Hyde and their daughter, Jennifer; and Judy (Dennis) Harrietha and their children, Julie Ann and Cindy. Born in Sydney, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Jesse (Lodge) Hussey. Phyllis is survived by her husband, Joseph Kennedy; three daughters, Deloras (Arnold) Smith, Lucy (John) Eaves, Annie (Norman) Blais; three sons, James, William, Joseph. She is also survived by three sisters, Dorothy, Evelyn (Bronson) and Jean (John); one brother, Everett (Agnes); two stepdaughters; four stepsons; nine grandchildren and several great-grandchildren. Born in Sydney, she was the daughter of the late Walter and Mary Jane (Rhymes) Sheppard. Mom was a devoted member of St. Albans Anglican Church. Her faith was strong and steadfast, a source of great comfort. She was also a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 12, Sydney. Family was important to Mom. She dedicated her life, loving and nurturing her children and grandchildren. Mom leaves a legacy of family, faith, love, laughter and generosity to all who knew her. Surviving are her loving husband of 59 years, John. Also left to mourn her passing are daughters, Carolyn (David Holland) and Janet (John Wylde); three grandsons, who were the center of her world, Mark and his wife, Johnna (mom's special 'granddaughter'), Jonathan and Greg. Jean was predeceased by her only son, Gary in 1994. Also predeceased by her sisters, Geraldine and Eleanor and only brother, James. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. He was born May 29, 1931, in Sydney Mines, N.S. Since Aug. 31, 1950, he was the loving husband of Victoria 'Vicki' Young (also from the beautiful island of Cape Breton). He will be sadly missed by his children, Phillip (Georgia), Calgary, Stephen (Heather), Petawawa, Diana, Woodstock, Nancy (Paul), Creemore; grandchildren, Sam, Jennifer, Adam, Kristie, Lisa, Ian, Mary, Thomas; two great-grandchildren, Connor and Brooklyn and by many nieces and nephews. Henry was predeceased by his parents, John and Catherine, brothers, John and Roddy, and sister, Kay. He is survived by his sister, Anne (Dunnville). A proud Mason, he was Initiated, Passed and Raised in 1968 at Oromocto, N.B. becoming a member of Centennial Lodge No. 53, Grand Lodge of New Brunswick. He affiliated with Nipissing Lodge No. 420, North Bay, Ont., in 1989 and was installed as Worshipful Master of that Lodge in 1994. In July 2005 he was Invested as District Deputy Grand Master, Nipissing East District, Grand Lodge A.F. & A.M of Canada in the Province of Ontario. He was a member of the Scottish Rite of Freemasonry and is a Past Thrice Puissant Grand Master of the North Bay Lodge of Perfection, Past Most Wise Sovereign of the North Bay Chapter of Rose Croix, member of the Barrie Consistory and is an Honorary Inspector General, receiving his Thirty-Third Degree at Edmonton, Alta., in September 2004. He was also of member of the AAONMS with membership in the Rameses Temple, Toronto, Ont. and the Rorab Shrine Club of North Bay, Ont. A funeral service, followed by a reception, will be held at St John the Divine Anglican Church 301 Main St., North Bay at 11 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 18 followed by interment at St. John Anglican Cemetery. A longtime resident of Glace Bay, she has spent the last 34 years living in Calgary. Madeline leaves behind her loving children, Wayne (Pat), Calgary, Cathy (Jim) Swan, Airdrie, Alta., Reg (Cathy) Glace Bay, Trish (Wayne) Allardyce, Calgary, Arlene Gillespie, Airdrie; Howard, Airdrie, Lynn (Anne), Peterborough, Ont. There are 12 loving grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sisters, Reta Hatfield, Leona Betts and brother, Frank (Sonja). Madeline was predeceased by her husband Kenneth Neil on Dec. 15, 1983. Madeline served in the Canadian Armed Forces during the Second World War. She was the daughter of the late Annie (Walsh) and Malcolm Kempt. For many years mom managed the laundromat on Main Street in Sydney Mines and later the laundromat on Pleasant Street, North Sydney, where she made many lifelong friends throughout the Northside area. After the death of her husband, Leonard in 1971, she moved to Ontario to live with her eldest son, Lindsay and his family. They lovingly cared for her until the time of her death. She will be missed by her sons, Lindsay (Bernita Mornet), Ontario, Emmanuelle (Joyce Hardy), Bernie, both living in North Sydney, Sandy (Kathy Douwick), Ontario; daughters, Sandra (Garry) Roscoe, Ontario, Susan (Michael) Doyle, Guysborough, Liza (Rob) Punch, Ontario, in addition to 16 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; two great great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. She is also survived by brothers, Earl (Barbara), Groves Point, Charles (Raye), Sydney Mines, Elmer (Linda), Ontario, Jack (Wilma), Ontario, Sandy, Ontario; sisters, Marge (Tom) Miller, Ontario and Cavelle, Florence.
