    3. Cape Breton Deaths September 10, 2008 Wednesday Elizabeth G. Wheeliker Glace Bay - It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Elizabeth G. Wheeliker, 97, formerly of Tower Road and Salem Road, Loch Lomond, who passed away at the Glace Bay Healthcare Complex on Thursday, Sept. 4, 2008. Elizabeth was the daughter of the late Alexander and Agnes (Bonnar) Graham. She was a loving and caring person. Elizabeth loved to fish and hunt, as well as camping. She travelled throughout the United States and Canada. She will be sadly missed by her son, Jack (Pat), Glace Bay; daughters, Carol (Gordon) Mercer, Tower Road, Sheila (Jose) DeSousa, Rhode Island, and Anne (Alex) Spencer, Broughton; sister, Annabel Hazelton, Rhode Island; daughter-in-law, Mae Graham, Tower Road; 13 grandchildren; 23 grea grandchildren and 14 great great-grandchildren. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Jack, sons, Edwin, Graham, Allan and John, daughters, Betty and Christina, grandson, Brian, brothers, George and Dan Graham. There will be no visitation. A memorial service will be held at Sydney Memorial Chapel on Thursday, 11 a.m. with Martha MacDonald, LMIT officiating. Interment in Greenwood Cemetery. Family flowers only. Memorials may be made to a charity of your choice. Born in Sydney, he was the son of the late Owen and Loretta (Prosser). Shawn was employed with Nova Scotia Power as a procurement team leader. Surviving are his son, Kirk, Sydney; sisters, Philene (Wes) Simms and Janis Pearson, Sydney; brothers, Owen (Janet) Lewis and Scott (Carolyn), Sydney. Besides his parents, Shawn was predeceased by his brothers, Barry and Todd. There will be no visitation. A memorial service will be held at St. Alban's Anglican Church on Thursday, 2 p.m. with Rev. Brenda Drake officiating. Interment in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens. Memorials may be made to the St. Alban's Building Fund. Condolences may be sent to the family at sydneymemorialchapel@ns.sympatico.ca. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Frank Bota 75, New Waterford - Frank Bota, 75, of Maple Street, New Waterford, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 9, 2008, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney. Born in Kelowna, B.C., he was a son of the late Alex and Elizabeth (Talador) Bota. Frank was a member of the Parish of St. Leonard, Mount Carmel Church, New Waterford. He was a man of strong faith who enjoyed his daily prayer. Frank was employed for over 25 years in the coal mines starting with Dominion Coal Company, then on the surface at No. 12 Colliery, and finally at No. 26 in Glace Bay. Surviving are his wife, the former Margaret MacDonald; daughter, Sheila (Kevin) MacCormick, Scotchtown; brother, Julius (Rita), New York, USA; three grandchildren, Amanda (Adam), Janaia, and Rebecca. Besides his parents, Frank was predeceased by a brother, Bill, sisters, Elizabeth and Margaret. There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place under the direction of V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford. A funeral mass to celebrate Frank's life will be held Friday, Sept. 12 at 11 a.m. in the Parish of St. Leonard, Mount Carmel Church with Fr. Paul MacNeil officiating. Interment will be in the parish cemetery with a reception to follow at the Carmel Center. All are welcome. Will was the son of the late Alexander and Mary (Boutilier) Ward, of Dominion. He was employed at St. Joseph's Hospital, Glace Bay Hospital and Cape Breton Regional Hospital as a cook for over 30 years. He served as hospitality minister at St. Anne's parish for many years. Will was an avid reader and outdoorsman who enjoyed fishing and hunting outings with his buddies. Will is survived by his wife, Lorraine (MacMullin); and daughters, Erin, High Prairie, Alta., and Megan, Edmonton, Alta.; sisters, Elaine Ward, Spring Hill, Delores (Warren) McComber, Nanaimo, B.C., Colleen MacKay, Glace Bay; brothers, Raymond (Laraine), Dominion, Roy (Linda) Dominion; sisters-in-law, Monica Ward, Glace Bay, Veronica Ward, Dominion and many nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, Will was predeceased by brothers, Alexander 'Sander' and Fabian, and father-in-law, Alex MacMullin. Visitation will be held on Thursday, Sept 11 at V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. The funeral mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m., Friday at St. Anne's Church, with Fr. Leo Boone officiating. Cherished grandfather of Grant, Gina, Corey, Todd, Brad, Sara, Shelly, Jennifer, Miranda, Kurtis, Darren and great grandchildren Jacob, Noah, Gavin, Trent, Carson, Kohen, Hannah, Reece, Brody, Austin, Emma and Makenzie. Richards 91, South Bar - Jennie Agnes Richards, 91, of South Bar, passed away Monday, Sept. 8, 2008, at the Cove Guest Home, Sydney. Born in South Bar, she was a daughter of the late Richard and Grace (McLennan) Richards. Jennie attended Mount Allison University, Nova Scotia Teachers College and she obtained a Master of Arts degree from St. FX University in 1956. Jennie's career began as a social worker with Children's Aid Society and travelled much of Cape Breton Island, serving the needs of the less fortunate. Later Jennie became a school teacher and began her teaching career in Whittenburg, N.S. From there she taught in various schools across Cape Breton Island but most of her teaching career was spent at Whitney School. She retired in 1975 as principal of Eastmount School, Sydney. Jennie was a faithful member of Trinity United Church in Whitney Pier and served on various committees throughout the years. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her sisters, Gladys Spears and Greta Bos and her brother, Morgan. Jennie was also predeceased by nephew, David Spears and niece, Marie Pothier. She is survived by nephews, Richard Spears, Robert Richards and Richard Bos and niece, Rosemary Lewis. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Sydney Memorial Chapel. Visitation Friday, Sept. 12 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. and funeral from Trinity United Church at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 13, with Rev. Jackie MacDonald officiating. Burial to follow at Eastmount Cemetery. Born in Kewstoke, she was a daughter of the late William Thomas and Katherine Margaret (MacLean) Nock. Shirley was a member of River Denys Presbyterian Church, where she served on the board of managers. She was also a member of both the Riverdale Auxiliary of Atlantic Missionary Society and the LADIES AID. Shirley was well known as being a beautiful cook, especially famous for her delicious apple pies. When not in the kitchen baking goodies, she could be found talking about her grandchildren whom she loved and adored very much. MacKeigan Sydney - Peter MacKeigan passed away peacefully Monday, Sept. 8, 2008, at the age of 84. Peter was born in Sandfield to the late Dan and Willena (MacDonald) MacKeigan. He was a bachelor of commerce graduate from Dalhousie University and a chartered accountant who was employed with Revenue Canada for over 30 years. Peter is survived by his children, Donald, Montreal, and Kathy (Ritchie) MacCoy, Sydney, and his beloved granddaughter, Annie MacCoy. He is also survived by his niece, Willena (Joe) Nemeth and her family, and his brother-in-law, George Mikkelsen. He was predeceased by Helen, his wife of over 50 years, a son in childbirth and his sister, Flora Mikkelsen. Peter was a kind and gentle soul, a devoted husband and a proud and loving father and grandfather. A special thank you to Ann Raoul and Nancy Eldridge for their care and devotion. A memorial service will be held at Bethel Presbyterian Church on Saturday, 11 a.m. with a reception to follow in the hall. Memorial donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation would be appreciated. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Hilda Vivian Patterson New Glasgow - Patterson, Hilda Vivian, of Stellarton passed away Monday, Sept. 8, 2008, at the Glen Haven Manor, New Glasgow. Born March 6, 1916 in Sydney, N.S., Hilda was the youngest daughter of the late Joseph and Alice Brown, and the last surviving member of her family. Hilda lived all her married life in Stellarton. She worked alongside her husband Pat in their dry-cleaning business and then became a homemaker. She was active in the community by supporting her church, volunteering at Glen Haven Manor and fundraising for various organizations. She was a founding member of the local Albion Chapter of the IODE and was active in the Stellarton Curling Club. She is survived by her son, Paul (Ann Marie), Upper Tantallon; she was a loving 'Nannie' to Sarah Patterson, Edmonton, and Andrew Patterson, Halifax. She was predeceased by her husband, Andrew 'Pat' Patterson and her siblings, Wally Brown, Irene Stewart and Margaret Walker, formerly Margaret Hubley. The family will receive visitors from 7-9 p.m. Thursday evening in the H.C. MacQuarrie Funeral Home, Stellarton. Memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday from First Presbyterian Church with Rev. Charles MacPherson officiating. Burial will be in Heatherdale Memorial Gardens.
