    3. Cape Breton Deaths September 19, 2008 Friday Kathleen M. (Fownes) MacDermid 1913-2008 - Kay MacDermid passed away peacefully at Alderwood Rest Home on Sept. 18, 2008. Born in Big Baddeck, she was the daughter of the late Frank and Mable (Wilson) Fownes and the last surviving member of her immediate family. Kay lived many of her married years in Beinn Bhreagh and was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. Kay was an active member of the Alexander Graham Bell Club and was the first worthy matron of the Victoria Chapter OES. She attended Greenwood United Church and the Glennis Farquhar Unit of the UCW. She was an avid bridge player, sailor and enjoyed various handicrafts. Kay is survived by her daughter, Jaunita (Douglas Macaulay); grandchildren, Rebecca, Kenneth, Macaulay, Darcy and Casey MacDermid and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Kenny, 1977 and son Charles, 2008. Visitation will take place Sunday, Sept. 21 from 7-9 p.m. in MacAskill Funeral Home, Baddeck. Funeral will be Monday, Sept. 22 at 11 a.m. at Greenwood United Church, Rev. Karen Lynch officiating. Donations may be made to Greenwood United Church or Alderwood Working Council. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Gordon Wayne 'Bucky' LeDrew 59, Sydney - Gordon Wayne 'Bucky' LeDrew, 59, of Rockcliff Crescent, Sydney, passed away quietly at his residence with his loving family by his side, after a courageous battle with cancer on Wednesday, Sept. 17, 2008. Born in Sydney, he was the son of the late Hubert and Dorothy (Dugid) LeDrew. Gordon was an excellent mechanic who owned/operated Mid Town Auto, with his lifelong friends and best buddies, Thomas Hawco and Thomas Hayes. Gordon loved his family. They were the reason he worked many long hours. Surviving are his wife, Karen (McLean); daughters, Kim Thistle (Ed), Sydney, Shelley McLean (Roger), Calgary, Sheila McLean (Darren), Ft. McMurray; sons, David, Calgary, Daniel, Toronto, Kyle, Calgary and the 'sunshine of his life' Thomas, at home; sisters, Marlene, Donna and Carol; brother, John (Wanda), Bras d'Or; special sister-in-law, Wanda Murrin; several grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Gordon was predeceased by his son, John and brother, James. He will be greatly missed by his family and many friends. Visitation will take place at Sydney Memorial Chapel on Sunday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A funeral service will be held in the chapel on Monday at 1 p.m. with Rev. Wade Reppert officiating. Interment in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks. Memorials may be made to a charity of choice. Donald James MacGuire, 85, of Old Route 5, Big Bras d'Or, passed away at home on Tuesday, Sept. 16, 2008. Born in Boston, Mass., he was a son of the late Rev. Donald and Kathleen (MacMillan) MacGuire. Knowing since he was just a boy that serving God was his calling, Rev. MacGuire went on to earn his arts degree at Memphis College in Tennessee and a bachelor degree in Divinity at Princeton. He then went on to preach in many parts of Alabama and Ohio, as well as, Philadelphia. Eventually, he studied at McGill University in Montreal, as well as studying from such masters as James Stewart at New College in Edinburgh, Scotland. Rev. MacGuire was a clergyman with the United Church of Canada, serving at Boularderie United Church for 33 years. In 1996, he retired after serving over 50 years in ministry. Surviving are his sister, Flora (Arthur) Dukes, Alabama and many extended family members living throughout Canada and the United States. Rev. MacGuire was predeceased by his sister, Jessie Donalda Broyles and brothers, Colin Herbert and Hugh Cameron MacGuire.There will be no visitation. A memorial service will be held at St. John's United Church, Big Bras d'Or at 3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 21, 2008, with Rev. Sean Hancock officiating. Following a reception, interment will be held in St. James Cemetery, Big Bras d'Or. In lieu of flowers, memorials in memory of Rev. MacGuire may be made to St. John's United Church or a charity of ones choice. Condolences may be sent to the family at sydneymemorialchapel@ns.sympatico.ca. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Elizabeth Jean (Libby) Johansen Kamloops, B.C. - Elizabeth 'Libby' Johansen (nee Hay) passed away on Sept. 10, 2008, at Royal Inland Hospital, Kamloops, B.C., after a brief illness. Libby was born May 13, 1932, at Sydney Mines, N.S., the daughter of George and Irene Hay. Her teaching career took her from Sydney Mines and Florence to the Yukon Territories and British Columbia. Libby was an accomplished pianist and artist, and an avid gardener. She attended Zion United Church in Ashcroft, where she played piano and sang in the choir. She belonged to the B.C. Retired Teachers' Association and the Ashcroft Arts Club, displaying and selling many of her water-colours at district art shows. She is lovingly missed by her sisters, Sheila Lindholm of Seattle, Washington and Lillian MacKeigan of Sydney Mines, N.S.; nieces and nephews; dear friends and her special friend, Jim Gyoba, all of whom will especially miss her easy laughter. She was predeceased by her parents, her husband, Oscar Johansen and her sister, Mary I. Hay. A memorial service will be held Friday, Sept. 19, 2008, in Ashcroft. Born in Victoria Mines, N.S., Jonna lived and worked in Kirkland Lake, Ont. for the past 35 years. She taught at Northern College and touched the hearts of those who knew her. Loving daughter of Eileen and the late John MacNeil. Loving sister of Maureen (Jim), Phillip (Jeanne-Mance), Janice (Charles), Scott (Margaret), David (Beverly) and Lorraine (Robert). Favourite aunt to nieces, Nadine, Heidi, Keri, Sarah and Katie and nephews, Marc and Paul. She leaves behind her good friends, Eileen Miko and Jane Blackwell as well as many others in Kirkland Lake. She was a friend to all and never missed an opportunity to help out family and friends in need. Cremation has taken place. Funeral mass will be celebrated at Holy Name Church, Kirkland Lake on Saturday, Sept. 20, 2008 at 11 a.m. with a reception to follow at Northern College.
