He passed away in the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, surrounded by his loving family and friends. He is survived by his wife, May; children, Heather, Sylvia (Jet) and Deanne (Judith); grandchildren, Sean (Marylouise), Rana, Judah (Haleh), Heddy, Jayson, Jesse, Niki (Jeremy), Jessica and Tamra; great-grandchildren, Metej, Kasra, Nika, Seamus and Elsie-May. He was predeceased by children, David (1972) and Jeannie (1992). Born in Pleasant Bay, Alfred lived in Pollett's Cove his first three years; the family moved to the Lower Settlement of Pleasant Bay in 1922. Like his father, Alfred was a boat builder, fisherman and farmer. In 1940, he enlisted with the Cape Breton Highlanders and served in England, Italy and Holland. While stationed in Scotland, he met May Grant. She became the love of his life, and after the war, joined him in Cape Breton; they shared 61 wonderful years of marriage. In 1956, he moved his family to Edmonton, Alta., where he worked at Canada Packers until his retirement in 1981. The following year, they returned to Pleasant Bay. In his 'retirement' he was able to devote time to his favourite pursuits: building and renovating their homes, helping neighbours with their projects, playing cribbage, baking, and chipping away at the wood pile. He had friends from all over the world and he welcomed all to his home, where they would share stories and debate the political issues of the day. The family would like to extend a special thanks to friend, Dwayne Cote for helping Alfred pass so peacefully with his beautiful fiddle music. We thank Hollis Scott for being so kind, helpful and supportive. We also thank the caregivers on Unit 4C at the C.B. Regional Hospital and Sacred Heart Hospital in Cheticamp and for the many others who assisted and supported us through this difficult time. A funeral service will be held at St. Andrews United Church in Pleasant Bay, on Friday, Sept. 19, at 2 p.m. Condolences may be sent to the family at sydneymemorialchapel@ns.symptico.ca. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Jeromina C.
