Cape Breton Deaths December 16, 2008 Tuesday Cleophas (Lokie) Robinson 88, Glace Bay - We are saddened to announce the death of our precious mother, Cleo (Lokie) Robinson, which occurred at home Monday, Dec. 15, 2008, surrounded by her loving family. Lokie was born in 1920 in Glace Bay to the late Hugh and Ellen (Nellie) Nolan McMullin and resided on Mansfield Street until last year. She is survived by her son, John T. (Louise Campbell); daughter, Rita (Peter MacInnis), with whom she resided, and her youngest daughter, Sheila (James Tate), who recently relocated from Toronto. She is also survived by her sisters, Faustina MacDougall, Lily Rhodes (John A.), Kaye McNeil (Fabe), Glace Bay, and Mary MacKinnon, Brockville. Nana will be missed by her three grandchildren, Francine Roper, Glace Bay, Anita LaPointe, Thunder Bay, Ont., and Justin MacInnis, Donkin, who she lovingly helped raise. Nanny is also survived by her two great-grandsons, Brett and Curtis Roper, who she dearly loved. 'Nana Lok' will be sadly missed by the 'girls next door,' Debbie, Leah and Emily MacIsaac. Mom also has numerous nieces, nephews and godchildren. Lokie was predeceased by her brothers, Justin, Dave, Hugh (Lou) and Matty, sisters, Elizabeth (Lizzie) MacNeil, Marie Redmond and Helen Stevens and her dear friend, Mary Butler. Mom was a lifetime member of the Coal Town Chorus and St. Anthony's choir. In her younger years, she was a cub scout leader and taught religion in her home. She loved to play bingo and enjoyed a good game of cards. She was a great cook and beautiful baker. A kind and generous person she shared with all and was always there for those in need. She was a gentle, talented mother who taught us well and passed on to us her strong Christian faith and generous ways. Lokie will be missed by all and forever loved and remembered. Visitation will take place Wednesday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in Curry's Funeral Home, Glace Bay. Mass of Christian Burial will be Thursday at 10 a.m. from St. Anthony's Church with Fr. Conrad Edwards officiating. Burial will be in the parish cemetery with a reception to follow in the church hall. Family flowers only. E-mail condolences to jmcurry@ns.sympatico.ca. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Russell John MacDonald Sydney Mines - It is with profound sadness that we, the family of Russell John MacDonald, announce his sudden passing at the age of 44, on Sunday, Dec. 14, 2008, in a house fire along with the family pets, Sasha, Casey and Moe. Born on July 16, 1964, in Sydney Mines, N.S., he attended Memorial High School and became an electrician with his own contracting company, Live Lines. Russell was predeceased by his parents, Mary (MacIntyre) and Russell MacDonald and many aunts and uncles. He is survived by his wife and soulmate, Beth (Matthews); his five cherished children, Tiffany, Mary-Beth, Matthew, Hannah and Eddie; his brothers and sisters, Colleen (Kevin McGean), Denise (Joe Bianchini), Marvin (Noelle), Sharon (Jason Lettice) and Trevor (Catherine). He is also survived by many aunts and uncles and by brothers-in law and sisters-in-law, Debbie Moore (Howie), Barbara MacDonald (David), Joanne Jardine (Sandy), Georgina MacLeod (Ian), Jim (Stephen) and Donna Landry (Bob Hicks). Russell will also be deeply missed by close friends George MacMullin, Sheldon and Carolyn Forrest, Paris Landry, Colin and Margaret Devoe, Mike and Dee McDonald, Janet Wilkie and Sharon Cousins. Russell was a truly dedicated father, husband and brother. He was a source of great strength, dedication and compassion for his family and his community. In a quiet and understated way, he helped many and was deeply thought of in Sydney Mines, the Northside and beyond. Beth and his children were everything to Russell and with time, they will overcome their grief and loss to honour his spirit and his example. Over the years, Russell also coached several sports teams, most recently the basketball team of his youngest daughter Hannah, the Jubilee Lakers. Russell's funeral will take place in Immaculate Conception Church, 49 Convent St., Sydney Mines, Wednesday Dec. 17, 2008, at 2 p.m., Fr. Dan MacLennan will conduct the mass. A reception will follow at the John J. Nugent Firemen's Centre, Sydney Mines. Donations in Russell's memory may be made to the IWK Foundation. Jobes Funeral Home. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Helen (Green) Hatcher 88, North Sydney - It is with deep sadness that we announce the death of our dear wife and mother, Helen Hatcher of Pleasant Street, North Sydney, and recently of Harbour View Hospital, Sydney Mines, on Sunday, Dec. 14, 2008. Born in North Sydney, Helen was the daughter of the late Stan and Katherine (Morrison) Green. She was raised in a family of six children, two sisters and three brothers. Helen was a quiet woman who smiled easily and whose most enjoyment in life was spending time with her husband, children and grandchildren. She was a gentle soul who will be greatly missed by all who loved her. She was a member of St. John the Baptist Anglican Church, North Sydney. Helen is survived by her husband, Gordon 'Smokey' Hatcher; and her seven children, Ted (Elaine) Hatcher, North Sydney, Rita (Raymond) MacKinnon, Sydney, Philip (Shelley) Hatcher, Diane (Kim), Stan (Heather) Hatcher, all of North Sydney, Calvin (Donna) Hatcher Sydney Mines, and David Hatcher, L'Arche Cape Breton; her 10 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and her brother, Charles 'Sonny' Green. She was predeceased by her sisters, Elizabeth Moores and Nina Luffman and brothers, Sid and Gordon Green. The family would like to take this opportunity to thank all the staff of the Harbour View facility for their genuine care and concern for our wonderful mother. Online condolences may be sent to info@wjdooley.com. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Roderick Joseph MacNeil 84, Glace Bay - It s with great sadness that we, the family, announce the passing of a wonderful husband, father and friend, Roderick Joseph 'Roddie' MacNeil, which occurred Sunday, Dec. 14, 2008, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney. Born in Glace Bay, he was a son of the late Allan and Effie MacNeil. Roddie was a member of St. Anne's parish. He enlisted in the Canadian Armed Forces during the Second World War. When he returned home, he drove taxi before entering heavy construction, where he worked as a carpenter and supervisor. Roddie frequently visited Iona and Christmas Island and was an avid hockey fan. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Rita; their sons, John (Gina), Niagara Falls, N.Y., Mike, Paul and Bernie, all of Glace Bay; daughter-in-law, Tanya, Glace Bay; brother, Bernie, Iona; sister, Theresa Bain, Vancouver, B.C.; sisters-in-law, Dolores 'Cookie' MacNeil and Eleanor MacNeil, both of Glace Bay; and his very dear friend, Peggy Hiscott. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by sons, Jimmie, Roddie and Martin, brothers, Johnny, Francis, Lennie, Angus, Malcolm and Michael, sister, Peggy. Young 68, New Waterford - It is with great sadness that the family announces the sudden passing of their mother, sister and grandmother on Dec. 13, 2008. Born in New Waterford, she was the daughter of the late Sylvain and Violet Christina (Cameron) Brenna. Bugsy was a kind and generous person, had many, many friends, loved bingo, cooking and baking and attending flea markets. She is survived by one daughter, Helen (Kevin) and her twin daughters, Sylvia and Ashley; son, Donald (Norma), their daughters, Angela and Lindsay; son, (Poco) Harold, Jr.; sisters, Lorrine, Germaine and Betty (Wayne) Gillis; brothers, Tony (Judy), Sylvain (Pierrette), Phonse (Marion), Donny (Margaret-Ann) and Jerry 'Jooky' (Sis) and many nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by brothers, Eddy, Henry and Johnny, sister, Carmel in infancy. Carmel was born in Sydney, N.S., and for a number of years she spent in parts of Canada where her late husband, Earl Chase would be posted. She later settled in Canso, N.S., where she spent many hours with the people there in the town she loved so dear. She has gone home to be embraced by her late father and mother, John Lorway and Charlotte (Spears) Lorway; her twin sister, Joan Lorway and her late husband, Earl Chase. She leaves behind her loving partner and friend, Danny Parker, Canso; daughters, Carol Ann Steel, Sydney, Darlene Hardy (Robert), Grand Prairie, Alta., Wendy Chase (David), Hammonds Plains, Barbara Cater (Dennis), Halifax, Joan Chase (Kevin), Halifax; and son, Stephen Chase (Barb), Grand Prairie, Alta. She is also survived by sisters, Jane (Sid) LaRusic, Sydney, Sr. Margaret Ann Lorway fj., Moncton, N.B.; and brother, Ronald (Shirley) Lorway; along with 14 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Carmel worked at Sears Canada for 28 years and after moving to Canso became a member of the Royal Canadian Legion. A funeral mass will be held Wednesday, Dec. 17, 2008, at 10 a.m. at St. Ignatius Church, Bedford, with Fr. Lloyd O'Neil officiating, this service will be followed by a reception. The remains will then be moved to Canso where a mass of celebration will be held for Carmel, Thursday, Dec. 18, 2008, at 2 p.m. in Star of The Sea Church, celebrant Fr. Danny Boudreau. Committal will be in Star of The Sea Cemetery in Canso. Donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of N.S. or to a charity of your choice. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Jeannette Mary Walsh, RN - It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of our beloved Jeannette on Dec. 7, 2008, in her 91st year. Jeannette was born in Sydney to the late Allan A. and Annie (McNally) MacDonald. She left Sydney after graduating from Holy Angels Convent for the Montreal General Hospital, where she completed her training to become an RN. In 1942, she joined the Royal Canadian Army Corps (nursing division) and was stationed in Horley, England with the 24th General Hospital. Upon her return to Canada she worked at St. Anne de Bellevue Veterans Hospital and was later transferred to the Queen Mary Veterans' Hospital in Montreal. When discharged, she returned to Sydney, where she worked at St. Rita and City hospitals before moving to Halifax in 1958, retiring as administrative supervisor at the Victoria General Hospital in 1977. Jeannette was predeceased by her husband, Daniel Walsh, Sydney; and is survived by her daughter, Winnifred (Kenneth Banfield) and loving grandchildren, Melissa (Jason Murphy) and Johnny. She is survived by her sister, Dorothy Brocklehurst, Sydney. She was also predeceased by her brothers, Wilfred, Alvin 'Eddy', Eldred 'Bubby' and Elmer. She leaves behind many nieces and nephews who will miss her dearly. After moving to Dartmouth upon retirement, Jeannette travelled extensively and became an active member of her community. She belonged to many groups and organizations including St. Anthony's Parish Catholic Women's League, Dartmouth North Seniors' Club, where she remained president for 10 years, and the senior choir. In 2001, Jeannette received a certificate from the senior citizen centre for 25 years of volunteer service. Jeannette remained active her entire life and was a regular at the Dartmouth Sportsplex aqua aerobics and silver strutter's tap dancing group. The family would like to thank all of the staff and volunteers at Ocean View Manor, where Jeannette resided for her final three years. Words cannot express our gratitude for the exceptional care, compassion and friendship you all showed your "duchess" during her time with you. Jeannette loved to socialize with family and friends and was always up for a good party. She will be deeply missed by all those who knew and loved her. Born in Birch Grove, N.S., she was a daughter of the late Elijah and Drucilla (Hiscock) Clarke. Doris was a resident of the Glen Haven Manor the past two and a half years, having previously resided at Belmont Street, Stellarton and Glace Bay. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Stellarton, and a former member of St. Paul's Presbyterian Church, Glace Bay. She was an avid bowler and enjoyed various seniors' activities in Stellarton, after she moved there in 2000. While living in Glace Bay, she was involved with the Citizens Service League, taught nursery school and worked with Books on Wheels at the Glace Bay General Hospital. Surviving are son, Rev. Charles (Colleen), Stellarton; a sister, Phyllis LeClaire, Hamilton; several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Charles, a daughter, Karen Jean, brothers, Edward, Norman, Jobe and William, sisters, Emmeline, Mildred and Mae. Cremation has taken place. The family will receive visitors from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m., Tuesday in the H.C. MacQuarrie Funeral Home, Stellarton. A memorial service will be held 2 p.m., Wednesday from the First Presbyterian Church, Stellarton, with Rev. Richard Sand officiating. Reception to follow in the church hall. Burial of ashes will take place in the Greenwood Cemetery, Glace Bay in the spring. Surviving are his wife, Judy (Kauffman) Kane; sons, Michael and Steve; grandson, Christopher; granddaughters, Sarah and Rachel; sister, Mary Gaudet; brothers, Herb and George; sisters-in-law, Nancy (Gary) Maxwell and Connie Ross; brothers-in-law, Tommy Kauffman, David Kauffman, (Rosie), Michael Kauffman (Heather) and John Flynn. He will be sadly missed by all his family and friends.
