Cape Breton Deaths December 26, 2008 Friday BOXING DAY Catherine (Honey) MacNeil - Catherine (Honey) MacNeil passed away peacefully at Victoria County Memorial Hospital, Baddeck, N.S., Tuesday, Dec. 23, 2008. Born in Iona, June 10, 1921, to Mary (MacNeil) Ryan. Honey was raised by her grandparents, Christina (MacDougall) MacNeil and Francis X.S. MacNeil. On Jan. 7, 1942, at the age of 20, Honey enlisted in the Canadian Women's Army Corps. She was proud of the fact that she served overseas in the United Kingdom, France, Belgium, Holland and Germany. Honey retired as a lance corporal on May 1, 1946. She remained a valued life member of the Royal Canadian Legion Grandona Branch 124, until the time of her death. Honey was a faithful member of St. Columba parish, Iona, where she was church organist for 40 years. For her contribution to the parish, she was recognized with a service award on Aug. 23, 1998. Over the years, she often entertained at community events with her musical talents. She received volunteer of the year award from the municipality of Victoria County in 1996 and from the N.S. Highland Village in 2002. Honey had an avid interest in politics and was a member and active supporter of the Liberal Party all her life. Besides her mother and grandparents, Honey was predeceased by her husband, F.X. MacNeil, stepsister, Tina Campbell and stepbrother, Bobby Ryan. She is survived by her children, Sharon, Iona, F.X. (Gail), Northwest Arm, Sydney, Louise (Joey) Redden, Marguerite (Ray Souchereau), Halifax, Paul (Stacy), Iona, and Pius (Gail), Coxheath. Other surviving members include a brother, Gregory (Phyllis) MacNeil, Delta, B.C.; stepsisters, Gertie Jeferey (Arthur), Sackville, Louise Scopehetes (Nick), Sackville; and stepbrothers, Harold Ryan, Toronto; Jackie Ryan, Halifax, and Francis Ryan, Truro. Honey is also survived by eight grandchildren, Matthew, Stephanie, Joel, Emily, Samera, Dayna, Justin and Jessie, all of whom she loved dearly. Visitation will be held Friday, Dec. 26 from 2-9 p.m. in St. Columba Parish Center. Funeral mass will be held Saturday, Dec. 27 at 2 p.m. in St. Columba Parish Church, Iona, with Fr. Paul Abbass officiating. A reception will follow at the Grandona Legion. Donations in Honey's memory can be made to the St. Columba Parish Building Fund or Victoria County Memorial Hospital. Arrangements are in the care of MacAskill Funeral Home, Baddeck, N.S. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Irene Lynk 1933-2008 Glace Bay - It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our dear mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and friend, Irene (Saccary) Lynk. Ma passed away peacefully at the Glace Bay Health Care Complex on Monday, Dec. 22, 2008, surrounded by her loving family after a courageous battle with COPD and cancer. Irene was born in Glace Bay to Alphonse and Winnifred (Byrne) Saccary. Ma was a very special woman who loved being surrounded by her family and friends. She loved a good game of cards, her CB radio, listening to the scanner and food. She was a devoted mother to all her children, especially her son and buddy, Wendell, who she lovingly cared for. Irene is survived by her children, Linda (Flynn) Locke, Lorraine (Jerry) MacGillivary, Clifford 'Linko' (Debbie), Joseph, Ann Denise (Reg) Purcell, Wesley (Mary), Myles 'Cha' (Karen), Darlene, Wendell; and one very special grandson, Wayne, who Irene helped mold into the fine man he is today; 15 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren and one great great-grandson; sisters, Annie, Beatrice, Katie and Willena; and brother, Myles. Besides her parents, Irene was predeceased by her husband, Clifford 'Kippy', son, Leo, grandchildren, J.J., Brendon, Bryan, sister, Theresa, brothers, Leo, Jake and dear friend, Carl. Although sad to say goodbye, we are glad that the pain she was suffering is now over and was very fortunate to have spent many hours enjoying her family. Visitation will be held Saturday, Dec. 27 from 7-9 p.m. and Sunday, Dec. 28 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. A funeral mass will be celebrated 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 29 at Immaculate Conception Church, Bridgeport with Fr. Gerald Campbell officiating. Cremation will follow. In lieu of flowers, donations in Irene's memory may be made to the Canadian Lung Association, Cancer Society or charity of choice. Colleen was born in Sydney, N.S., Aug. 17, 1929, the daughter of the late Charles and Ann (Walker) Smith. She is survived by sons, Bobby (Sharanne Heaton) Florida, Ronald, Tennessee, Scott (Mary); and daughter, Paula (Don) Witting, Southgate, Mich.; sister, Lynda (Wayne) Hayes; and brother, Donald (Gerry) Smith, Sydney, N.S. In addition to her parents she was predeceased by husband, Robert and brother, Charles (Helen) Smith. Colleen was a member of Allan Park Christian Church.
