Cape Breton Deaths December 08, 2008 Monday Lillian Pheifer 55, New Waterford - It is with great sorrow that we, the family of Lillian Pheifer, announce her passing on Saturday, Dec. 6, 2008, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital after a courageous battle with cancer. Born in New Waterford, Dec. 24, 1952, she was the daughter of the late Harold 'Bonnie' Hulme and Gladys Hulme. Lillian is survived by her loving husband, Thomas; daughter, Cindi (Nelson) Quirk, Ottawa, Ont.; and her son, Robert (Melysa), Edmonton, Alta.; grandchildren, Victoria Quirk and Rory and Cierra Pheifer. She is also survived by sisters, Ruth (Doug) Dupe, New Waterford and Darlene (Donald) Muise, Winnipeg, Man.; brothers, William (Florence) Hulme and Scott (Arlene MacEachern), New Waterford; along with several nieces and nephews. Lillian is also survived by sisters-in-law, Ulean (Wilfred) McNeil and Debbie (Carl) Brewer and brother-in-law, Joseph (Joey) Pheifer, all of New Waterford. Besides her father, Lillian was predeceased by her son, Douglas, and her father-in-law, Rudy Pheifer and mother-in-law, Marie (Pheifer) O'Brien and her husband Mick O'Brien. She was also predeceased by sisters-in-law, Helen and her husband Robert (Bobby) Lewis as well as Marlene Pheifer and brothers-in-law, Douglas and Robert Pheifer. Lil's greatest joys in life were her family and spending time at their bungalow in Guysborough. Everyone was always welcome there to spend a weekend of laughter and stories and a good cup of tea. She was employed with Catalog Teleservices Company (Speigel) in New Waterford for the past several years. Visitation for Lillian will take place at V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford, today (Monday) from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral service officiated by Rev. Vernon Reid will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. at All Saint's Anglican Church, New Waterford. Cremation to follow with burial in Union Grove Cemetery, Scotchtown at a later date. Lillian will be taken to the church at noon time on Tuesday. We love you. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Leo Gregory Egan 62, Baddeck/Sydney Mines - After a courageous battle with cancer, Leo Gregory Egan, 62, of Hunters Mountain, Baddeck passed away peacefully at Victoria County Memorial hospital surrounded by his loving family and friends. Born in Sydney Mines he was the son of Gregory Egan and the late Amelia (Davidson) Egan. Leo's entire career was spent with the Department of Transportation and Public Works. He began as a labourer on the centre-line truck and was superintendent for the Province of Nova Scotia prior to his retirement. Leo was actively involved with the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 53, Baddeck. He served as the president from 1993-2001. He also worked as a part-time jail guard for the RCMP, Baddeck. Leo leaves to mourn his loss his wife, Barb (Morrison) Egan; son, Timothy; his father, Greg; stepchildren, Vaughn Morrison (Amanda), Jolie Morrison; grandson, Kale; brothers, George, Sandy (Dorothy); sisters, Nancy Marsh, Patsy (Chester) Wyman, Kathie (Ian) Aker and Jacqueline (John) MacDonald and former wife, Bernadette (Bonny) Buffett; many nieces; nephews; relatives; his beloved pets, Tigger, Misty, Sam and many, many loving friends. His family would like to express sincere thanks to the doctors and nurses of Victoria County Memorial Hospital, the Cape Breton Cancer Center, Palliative Care and Victoria County Hospice Society. Freddie passed away Sunday, Dec. 7, 2008, at the Glace Bay Health Care Complex. Born in Glace Bay he was the son of the late James and Thelma (Murphy) Gilmet. Freddie was a member of St. Joseph's Church, Reserve Mines. He was employed with Devco working on the railroad as well as Prince and Lingan Phalen collieries and retiring after several years of service. He was an avid sports fan and enjoyed hunting, fishing, darts and playing cards. He loved recording music for family and friends. He will be sadly missed by his loving wife, Viola (Madore); sons, Jamie (Chris), Calgary, Michael (Lisa), Glace Bay; stepson, Rodney (Holly) MacKenzie; and stepdaughter, Rolonda (Stephen) Thomas, Kitchener, Ont.; brothers, Calvin (Bernadette), Reserve, Blaise (Karen), Tower Road, Glace Bay, Martin (Shirley), Donkin, Wendell, Calgary; sister, Linda MacNeil, Glace Bay; and nine cherished grandchildren. Also surviving is a very good friend, Willie Boutilier, Picton, Ont. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by a brother, George and two brothers, in infancy. Born in Birch Grove on Nov. 25, 1926, he was the son of the late Mary Louise (Butts) and John Snow. Andy was an adherent of MacKay Memorial Church in Birch Grove. In his younger years, Andy was employed as janitor at Birch Grove School. He also worked as a coal hauler and drove the bus for Pettipas Bus Service. Andy enjoyed doing carpentry work, odd jobs for family and friends. He also enjoyed spending time in his garage with his buddies from the neighbourhood. Andy always made a daily trip down the road to visit Ches and May and enjoyed his jaunts to town and around the Grove. Andy is survived by sisters, Sadie Snow, Birch Grove, Leah Ferguson (Roy), Sydney, Flora (Pius) Antonello, Sydney; brothers, Chesley (Maisie) Snow, Birch Grove, Robert, Birch Grove; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by sisters, Mable (Michael) Kibyuk, Louise (Henry) Carson, Emily (Frederick) Lynk, brothers, William (Isabel) Snow and Charles in infancy. Visitation for Andy will be held in Patten Funeral Home, 71 Union St., Glace Bay, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. today (Monday). Funeral will be held Tuesday, Dec. 9 at 2 p.m. in the funeral home chapel, Rev. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the cancer society or the palliative care society. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Mabel (MacKay) Jones 94, North Sydney Community Guest Home - Mabel Jean Jones passed away Dec. 6, 2008, at the Northside General Hospital surrounded by her loving family. Born in Dominion, she was the daughter of the late Lawrence MacKay and Sarah Ann Boutilier. She is survived by daughters, Marlene (George) Lovell, Miriam (Bernard) Tobin, Garland (Les) Stubbert, Evelyn (Lawrence) Howard; and none son, Conrad. Also surviving are 21 grandchildren; 30 great grandchildren and five great great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, Garfield Jones, one son, Sheldon, four sisters and four brothers, three grandsons and one granddaughter. At Mabel's request there will be no visitation. Funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 9, at Trinity Anglican Church, Queen Street, Sydney Mines, with Rev. Peter Rafuse officiating. Burial in Trinity Cemetery, Tobin Road. Bray 1926-2008 Glace Bay - It is with deep sadness and sorrow that we announce the passing of our mother on Saturday, Dec. 6, 2008, at the Glace Bay Health Care facility surrounded by her family. Mom was born in Glace Bay, and a life-time resident of Arthur Street in the Sterling. She was the daughter of the late Murdock and Lizzie MacDonald. Mom graduated from Normal College in Truro and taught Grade 3 in New Waterford. Mom was an avid reader. She also loved working in her garden and enjoyed her many travels. Mom is survived by her daughters, Lillian (Bryan), Jean, Susan (Clifford); sons, Gerald Jr., Damian (Mary); grandchildren, Derek (Kristen), Laurie Jean (Mark), Cindy, Sarah, Angus and three great-grandchildren, John, Matthew and Mary. She is also survived by her sister, Jean, sisters-in-law, Lillian, Marjorie and Torchy; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Besides her parents, Mom was predeceased by her husband, Gerald, son, Christopher, in infancy, sister, Sadie, brothers, Buddy and Bumper. No visitation by request. Hickey 93, Margaree/Sydney - It is with great sadness that we announce the death of our sister and aunt, Christena 'Tena' Ainslie Hickey, 93, former resident of Marlborough Avenue, Sydney and for the past nine years a resident of Margaree where she lived with her nephew and his wife Carl and Helena Hart. Tena passed away peacefully Friday, Dec. 5, 2008, at the Inverness Consolidated Memorial Hospital. Born in Belle Cote, Inverness County, she was a daughter of the late Hanlen and Jessie (MacKay) Munro. Tena attended St. Andrew United Church, Sydney and also St. Matthew Wesley United Church, North Sydney. She is survived by sisters, Isabel (Joe) Stasiuk, Portage La Prairie, Gladys (Glen) Bristow, Toronto; and by a number of nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Arthur Hickey, sisters, Ruth Young, Mary Hart, Lettie Vair and by a brother, Edward Munro. No visitation by request.
