Cape Breton Deaths December 29, 2008 Monday Elizabeth Rose (Betty) Hennick 1943-2008 Edwardsville - Betty Hennick passed away Dec. 26, 2008, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital surrounded by her loving family. Born in Edwardsville, she was the daughter of the late Parnell and Ellen (Rambeau) Williams. Betty is survived by her husband of 47 years, Ron; two daughters, Paula Roode, Lower Sackville, Lisa (Stephen MacIntosh), Howie Centre; and one son, Scott (Shauna Carrigan), Edwardsville. Gramma will be sadly missed by seven treasured grandchildren, Suzanne and Andrew Hennick, Kelly Lynn and Stephanie MacIntosh, Marla, Ben and Shauna Roode; as well as one special great-granddaughter, Blayre-Elizabeth Patterson. Betty is also survived by two sisters, Madelynn (David) Williams, Saint John, N.B. and Agnes (Malcolm) Rudderham, Port Elgin, N.B.; five brothers, Jake (Mary) and Ira (Bridget), both of Edwardsville, Willard, New Waterford, Archie, Port Hawkesbury, and Winston (Patricia), Saint John, N.B. Also surviving is special mother-in-law, Hazel Hennick, Sydney; and many nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by father-in-law, Albert Hennick, who passed away Dec. 24, 1997. Betty managed Louis' Good Used Clothing for 13 years during which time she met many wonderful people who became close friends. She enjoyed reading a good book, knitting, sewing and most recently rug hooking as well as going for walks with her good friend, Marilyn. She loved walks on the beach and long drives with Ron, and she cherished every moment with each one of her grandchildren and was very proud of them all. Visitation for Betty will be held at Sydney Memorial Chapel, Tuesday, Dec. 30 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral service will be Wednesday, Dec. 31 at Sydney Memorial Chapel, 2 p.m. with Rev. Wade Reppert officiating. Family flowers only please. Donations may be made in Betty's name to the An Cala Palliative Care Unit at Cape Breton Regional Hospital so they may continue their compassionate work. To Nan, You were my mentor, Thank you. I love you. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Angela Louise (Tortola) Giacomantonio July 15, 1922-Dec. 28, 2008 - Angela Louise (Tortola) Giacomantonio, 86, of Sydney, formerly of 182 Lingan Rd. passed away peacefully Dec. 28, 2008, at Harbourstone Enhanced Care Facility surrounded by family and friends. Born in Sydney, she was the daughter of the late Gaetano and Almerinda Tortola. She was a member of St. Nicholas parish all her life. She was a member of the St. Nicholas Ladies Auxiliary, the Cape Breton Italian Cultural Association, and a devout patron of Ste. Anne de Beau Pre. Her life was devoted to her husband and children and for that they are eternally grateful. Angela is survived by four sons, Michael (Joyce), Halifax, Joe (Lexie), Sydney, Carman (Margo) and Nicholas (Victoria), both of Halifax. Also by her grandchildren, James, Christopher, Angela, Deanna, Tracy, Katherine, Michael, Nicholas, Curtis, Nicole, Sarah and Dominic. She was predeceased by brothers, Anthony, Michael, Ernest and Dominic Tortola.' Visitation for Angela Giacomantonio will be held Tuesday, Dec. 30 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at T.W. I'm back again. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Daniel (Danny) Campbell 73, New Waterford - It is with great sadness the family wish to announce the passing of their husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather on Dec. 24, 2008, at the New Waterford Consolidated Hospital, surrounded by his loving family. Born in New Waterford, Danny was the son of the late James and Sarah (Layman) Campbell. Danny was a miner for 40 years, working in 16, 12, 26 and Lingan, was an active member of the Army, Navy and Airforce, Unit 217, was an avid cribbage player, loved bingo and darts. He also looked forward to his yearly trips to Newfoundland. Danny is survived by his loving wife, Mary (Campbell); sons, Kenny (Cathy), New Waterford, and Michael (Laura), Fort McMurray; daughters, Dorothy (Paul) Kraft, Ontario, Cheryl-Ann (John Wayne) Steiger, New Waterford, and Heather (Michael) Hurley, Saskatchewan; 13 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; sisters, Winnie Gatza, Whycocomagh, Marion (Doug) MacDonald, New Waterford; brother, Leo, New Waterford; sisters-in-law, Sadie, Susan, Rena and Pauline; and brother-in-law, Bunnie Oliver, also a very, very good friend, Bert Grace. Besides his parents, Danny was also predeceased by brothers, Gerald, Art and Leo Ambrose, sister, Dorothy and a daughter in infancy. Born in Sydney, she was the daughter of the late Catherine (MacAskill) and Otis Caldwell. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Florence was widowed at a young age and raised her family on her own displaying great tenacity, strength and other values which she determinedly passed on to her children and grandchildren. She was an active and faithful member of Holy Ghost parish and a valued member of the Ukrainian Catholic Women's Club still contributing actively up until the time of her death. Florence will be sadly missed by daughters, Michelle (Peter) Jurczak, Toronto, Denise (Ron) O'Keefe, Sydney; and daughters-in-law, Gladys (Moe) Antonello and Pamela Mahalik. Also left to survive are grandchildren, Michael (Gina) Mahalik, New York, Kim (Ed) Cameron, Baddeck, David Mahalik, Sydney, Peter Mahalik, Dartmouth, Anne Mahalik (Richard Kazakoff), Halifax, Matthew and Adam Jurczak, Toronto, Michael and Meghan O'Keefe, Sydney; great-grandchildren, Gian Carlo, Gian Franco, Chloe, Chase, Laken, Michael, Sophie and Mila. Also survived by nephews and nieces, John (Sandra) Hawrylak, Dartmouth, Kathy Claxton (John Pountney), Erin, Ont., and Steffie Hawrylak-Young, Halifax. Born in New Waterford, she was a daughter of the late James and Mary (Perfect) MacLeod. Martha was a member of the Parish of St. Leonard, St. Michael Church and a former member of the Ladies Auxiliary. She was also a member of the Scotchtown Pensioners' Club. Martha enjoyed going from house to house playing poker with her friends. She also liked playing darts, bingo and going to the casino. In her early years, she worked on the cleaning staff at the Cape Breton Hospital. Surviving are daughters, Ella Brown, Barrie, Ont., Sheila (Alister Fraser) Brown, Eileen Brown, both of Scotchtown, Evelyn (Murdock) Odo, New Waterford; sons, James, Frank (Alice), both of New Waterford; brothers, Joseph MacLeod, Bridgeport, Charles MacLeod, New Waterford; sisters, Sarah Sampson, Agnes Chiasson, both of New Waterford, Theresa Hannigan, Glace Bay; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren. Also surviving are her compassionate and loving careworker, Shirley MacDonald, New Waterford, and her best pal, her dog, Cocoa. Martha was predeceased by her husband, Clifton, son, Frank Bernard in infancy and four brothers, Joey, Howard, Elias and Alex 'Eckie'. Born in New Waterford, she was a daughter of Stephen and Valerie (Loveys) Finlayson, New Waterford. Stepahnie was baptized at Calvin United Church and was a member of the Salvation Army, New Waterford. She graduated from Breton Education Centre in 2007 and later became employed with Spiegel Catalog Teleservices Company in New Waterford. Surviving are sisters, Lacey Finlayson and Holly Finlayson, both of New Waterford; paternal grandparents, Johnny and Maureen (LeBlanc) Finlayson; paternal great-grandmother, Bridget LeBlanc; several aunts, uncles, and cousins as well as her BFF, Marissa McGillivray. Stephanie was predeceased by maternal grandfather James 'Newt' Loveys and maternal grandparents, Phil and Margaret (Crummey) MacPherson. Visitation will be held Monday, Dec. 29, from 7-9 p.m. at V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford. A funeral service will take place 2 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 30, at Calvin United Church with Captains Cyril and Eliza Keats officiating and Rev. Duncan Roach presiding. Stephanie's remains will be taken to the church at noon on Tuesday. Burial will be in Union Grove Cemetery, Scotchtown, with a luncheon to follow at Calvin Hall. Born in Bras d'Or, she was the daughter of the late Hartland and Rita (Jessome) Colvey. She was a member of St. Joseph's parish, Bras d'Or. She is survived by her husband, James; her five children, Joseph, Guelph, Ont., James (Brenda), Bras d'Or, Rita (Brian) MacNeil, Florence, Mary Carew, Barrie, Ont., and Debbie Reid, Guelph, Ont.; 12 grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. Also surviving are her sister, Mary Walker, Halifax; and her brother, Thomas Colvey, North Sydney. She was predeceased by her grandson, Courtney Reid, Guelph, Ont. and brothers, Hubert, Stephen and Lewis Colvey. Visitation Tuesday, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in Francis Funeral Home, Sydney Mines. Donations may be made to the Muscular Dystrophy Association or to a charity of choice.Expressions of sympathy may be sent to d.francis@ns.symaptico.ca. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Alice Lillian Florence Hiscock 95, North Sydney - It is with deep sadness that we announce the sudden passing of our dear mother, Alice Hiscock, a resident of Seaview Drive, North Sydney, Friday, Dec. 26, 2008, at the Northside General Hospital. Born in England, she was a daughter of the late Henry and Ellen (Chapman) Ellis. Alice's husband George was born and grew up in North Sydney, and was stationed in England with the Canadian Army during the Second World War. Alice and George were married Jan. 1, 1943. Alice travelled alone, but with many other war brides, to Canada by ship in 1946 and joined George and his family in North Sydney. They lived in several different locations with the Canadian military before retiring to North Sydney in 1970. Alice had a wonderful sense of humour and enjoyed spending time with her family and her friends, including her fellow War Brides. Among many other things, she found great pleasure in gardening, cooking, Coronation Street and a good cup of tea (milk in first of course!). Alice was an animal lover, and over the years, enjoyed the company of a few cats, budgies, birds, squirrels and a dog named Sandy. She was affectionately known as 'The Queen' to members of her daughter's quilting group. She was an adherent of St. Matthew Wesley United Church North Sydney. She is survived by her two children, Brenda and Keith, both of North Sydney; as well as three nieces and their families in England. Alice was predeceased by her husband' George in November of this year. Also predeceased by her two sisters, Rose (England) and Bess (Australia). There will be no visitation or funeral service by request. A private family graveside committal will be held at a later date in Lakeside Cemetery, North Sydney. Born in Sydney Mines, she was the daughter of the late Ernest and Sophia (House) Tremblett. She was a member of Carman United Church and the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 8, Sydney Mines. She is survived by her daughters, June Kieley, Sydney Mines, Linda (Kevin) Cantwell, Sydney; her son, Carl Colburn Jr., Bras d'Or; sisters, Edith Pye, North Sydney, Sylvia Darling, Boston; her grandchildren, Nicole, Courtney, Troy, Carla, Scott and Rodney; and her great-grandchildren, Nathan, Mackenzie, Steven, Logan, Jenna, Jordan, Brittany and Lindsay. She was predeceased by her husband, Carl, sisters, Annie, Violet and Elizabeth, her brothers, Ernest and William and son-in-law, James Kieley. Born in Glace Bay, Sept. 5, 1934, he was a son of the late Don Neil Campbell and the late Mary Catherine MacNeil. Tom is survived by his wife of 54 years, Jean; daughter, Christine (Mark) Nomura; grandchildren, Ryoko, Kimiko, Mariko and Emiko; sons, Michael, Donald; grandchildren, Andrew and Adrienne; and Shawn (Tracey); grandchildren, Connor and Jakob. Tom is also survived by brothers, Andrew (BettyAnn), Murdock (Cory), William (Doreen); sisters, Margaret (Mark) Westhaver, Anne (William) Jeffries; and numerous nephews and nieces. Tom served proudly in the Royal Canadian Air Force for 23 years which included serving a tour in Egypt and was also an instructor for Department of Defence-Royal Canadian Engineers for many years in Chilliwack, B.C. Tom was an avid traveller, golfer and curler. He also enjoyed fishing on the Bras d'Or with his good friend Bernie.
