Cape Breton Deaths December 01, 2008 Monday Brenda Anne Grant 1955-2008 Glace Bay - Well known, well loved, singer/songwriter, Brenda Anne Grant of Glace Bay passed away on Sunday, Nov. 30, 2008 at the Glace Bay Health Care Complex, surrounded by her loving family and friends. Born in New Waterford, she grew up in Glace Bay and lived for a number of years in Halifax. She was the daughter of Mary Rose (Bates) and the late John 'Jack' Grant. During the past 15 years, she lived in Glace Bay employed as a medical secretary, most recently with Dr. Mark Ellerker. Brenda was a loving mother, daughter, sister and friend. Her humour, smile and faith filled songs will be celebrated and remembered by all who knew her. Brenda will be deeply missed by her mother, Mary Rose; loving daughters, Emily and Megan Grant, all of Glace Bay; brother, John (Maureen), Wolfville; sister, Jacqueline Grant, Glace Bay; nieces, Ember, Shasta, Kiara Grant; nephews, Logan and Parker Grant, Daryl, Michael and Paul Bramwell; many aunts, uncles and special friends. Online condolences to the Grant family are available through www.vjmcgillivray.ca. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Mary Ellen 'Buffie' Buckler 1915-2008 Glace Bay - It is with broken hearts the family of Mary Ellen 'Buffie' (Lamont) Buckler, formerly of 7th Street, Glace Bay, who also resided with her granddaughter at 213 Wallace Rd., Glace Bay, announce her passing, Buffie passed away on Friday, Nov. 28, 2008 at Victoria Haven Nursing Home, where she had been a resident the past three years. Buffie was a member of the Glace Bay Salvation Army and Home League. She was a member of the Glace Bay Pensioners Club where she enjoyed playing darts, bowling and the occasional card game. Born in Glace Bay on January 14, 1915 she was the daughter of the late John and Catherine (MacKinnon) Lamont. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Buffie leaves behind to cherish her memory, daughter, Lois Killiough, Eastern Passage; sons, Sherman (Audrey), Glace Bay, Ken (Carrie), Florida and special granddaughter, Cavelle and her family, who took fantastic care of her for many years; seven loving grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. Also surviving are many nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Llewellyn Buckler; son, Alben; sisters, Susan, Annie, Catherine, Margaret, Jennie; and brother, Donald. Visitation for Buffie Buckler will be held today (Monday) 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. A funeral service will be held 3 p.m. on Tuesday in the Salvation Army Church with Captains Kristian and Lesley Simms officiating. Interment will be in Greenwood Cemetery. Online condolences to the family are available through www.vjmcgillivray.ca. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Dennis Donald Ginn Jan. 25, 1953 - Nov. 29, 2008 Florence - It is with broken hearts and deepest sorrow and regret that we announce the death of our beloved husband, father and grandfather Dennis Ginn. He passed away on Saturday, Nov. 29, 2008, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, An Cala Unit, surrounded by his loving and devoted wife and children, after a brief but courageous battle with cancer. Born in Toronto, Ont., Dennis was the son of the late Mary (Graham) Lamb, and Don Ginn. Dennis was a wonderful husband, dad and poppy who possessed a great passion for his family and close friends. He will ever be remembered for his wit, charm and the way he made everyone around him smile. As sick as Dennis was, he never complained, but focused his attention on cheering up everyone around him. His smile would light up a room. His strength and courage was truly remarkable. His final weeks were made a little easier by the 'Angels' that helped care for him on 413 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital. His passion for cars and transport trucks led him to a career of 37 years in long haul truck driving which took him to many parts of the United States and Canada. He most recently was employed with S&M Trucking in Sydney. He made many friends along the way. He was always eager to help out others, no matter what the task was. He will always be remembered for his kindness and generosity to others. Dennis is survived by his loving and devoted wife and best friend Theresa (Williams-Strong) Ginn; his loving children, Michael (Barbara) Ginn, Tammy Ginn, both of Ontario, Cheryl Strong (Tommy), North Sydney, Lisa (Terry) Penny, Florence, and Joey Strong, at home. Also surviving are his precious grandchildren, all who held a special place in his heart, Brandan, Chantelle and Caitlyn, Ontario, Daryll, Ontario, Tiffany and Brianne, North Sydney, Ashley, his 'Little Angel' Terri-Lynn and of course 'Den Den's little buddy' Andrew (who he always blew his horn for), Florence. He is also survived by one brother, Steve Lamb (Wendy), Ontario; special aunt, Jeanne, Georgia, USA; sisters-in-law, Bridget Dawe, Carlotta Corbett; brothers-in-law, Joseph (Geraldine) Williams and Thomas (Hazel) Williams, all from Sydney Mines and his best friend and sidekick, James Hayden, North Sydney. Besides his parents, Dennis was predeceased by his stepfather, Vern Lamb and brothers-in-law, James Corbett and Thomas Dawe. There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service to celebrate his life will be held Wednesday, Dec. 3, 2008, at 11 a.m. in Trinity Anglican Church, Queen Street, Sydney Mines, with the Rev. Peter Rafuse officiating. He will be deeply missed by his wife and best friend, Delores (Henry); his children, Shelly Knight, Jamie (Cynthia) and Shauna Goudreau (Jean-Pierre); his grandchildren, Randhall, Paige, Ethan and Brendan; many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, Stephen and Christine (Hollohan); brothers and sisters, Jen, Bill, Ann, Margaret, Joseph and Stephen. Jim was a devoted and caring husband and father. He was an avid tarabish player, hunter and fly fisherman. He enjoyed entertaining his friends and family with his beautiful voice, one of his many special gifts. Born in Glace Bay, Martin was the son of Rod and Rita MacNeil. He was employed at Stream in Glace Bay. Martin's wishes were to pass away in the arms of his loving wife Tanya and was surrounded by his loving family. He was a member of Knox United Church. Martin loved movies and computers. He was the seventh son of Rod and Rita MacNeil and the cherished son-in-law of Art and Lillian Driscoll. Martin is survived by his wife, Tanya; brothers, Johnny (Genie), of New York, Michael, Paul and Bernie, all of Glace Bay. Martin was predeceased by two brothers, Roddy and Jimmy. Visitation for the late Martin MacNeil will take place on Tuesday, Dec. 2, 2008 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at Patten Funeral Home, 71 Union St., Glace Bay, 849-7520. Curran Keizer, announce her passing at Harbourstone Enhanced Care facility on Nov. 28, 2008 at the age of 89. Born in Halifax, she was the daughter of the late Harold and Amilia 'Jill' (Kirkwood) Curran. Mina was predeceased by her husband, Aubrey Keizer; one brother, Harry; two sisters, Dorothy and Helen and her great-grandson, Matthew Bradley McIntyre. Surviving are her daughters, Karen Melvin (Barton), Claudia Pinsent, both of Halifax and Janice (Kenny) Mader, Sydney; grandchildren, Vincent Melvin and Ashley Pinsent, both of Halifax; Brad Mader, Edmonton and Jill (Bernie) McIntyre, Sydney; great-grandchildren, Morgan and Mitchell McIntyre, Sydney; as well as sisters, Olive Cooke and Joan Landry, Dartmouth. There are no words to express our heartfelt thanks to the staff of Soldier's Cove and Anne Louise MacDonald of Harbourstone. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Shirley MacNeil Glace Bay - We are sad to announce the passing of our dear mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, Anne Shirley MacNeil. Shirley passed away Saturday, Nov. 29, 2008, at St. Vincent's Guest Home in Halifax, with her oldest son, Connie by her side. Born in Bridgeport, Glace Bay, she was the only daughter of the late Eddie and Mary Ann Coleman. Shirley was a devoted Roman Catholic and a lifelong member of Holy Cross parish in Glace Bay. She was a long standing volunteer at Holy Cross Church, where she would help with altar duties and assist with maintaining the church's interior. She loved animals especially the homeless, and took in many homeless kittens offering them a warm and comfortable home. In her earlier years she worked at the old Eaton's store in Glace Bay. Shirley was predeceased by the love of her life, her husband, Connie MacNeil Sr. She is survived by five children, Connie MacNeil (Cathy), Halifax, Ron MacNeil (Shauna), Alberta, Elaine Oates (Leonard), Alberta, Valerie Simms (Carl), Alberta and Glynis Devison (David), Ontario; 13 grandchildren, Lynore, Genevieve and Conrad MacNeil, all of Halifax, Bradley and Kaetlyn Oates of Edmonton and Christopher Oates of Toronto, Michelle, Shannon and Evelyn MacNeil, Edmonton, Stephanie and Keith Simms, Alberta and Breton and Andrew Devison, Ontario. Shirley is also survived by her daughter-in-law, Veronica MacFadgen, Halifax and one great-grandson, Avery Conrad, also resides in Halifax. She was also predeceased by two infant daughters, Martha and Mary and her brother Tom 'Sonny' Coleman. Visitation will be held today (Monday) from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at Curry's Funeral Home, 775 Main St., Glace Bay. Vigil prayers will be at 7:15 p.m. Funeral mass will be celebrated at Holy Cross Church on December 2, 2008 at 10 a.m. with Fr. Conrad Edwards officiating. Interment will be at St. Anne's Cemetery, Glace Bay. A special thank you is extended to the transitional care unit at Dartmouth General Hospital and all the second floor staff at St. Vincent Nursing Home for their wonderful care.
