Cape Breton Deaths December 12, 2008 Norma Doreen Penny May 29, 1937-Dec. 10, 2008 - Norma Doreen (Vail) Penny, age 71, passed peacefully at Victoria General Memorial Hospital, Baddeck, on Wednesday, Dec. 10, 2008. Born May 29,1937, in Inverness she was the daughter of the late Everett Vail and Emmie (Roberts) Vail Thompson. Norma attended Sydney Academy and Mount Allison University. Over the years she worked for Nova Scotia Power, Crowell's, Emerson Henderson Toyota Motors, W.W. Munroe Agency. Norma was a very talented knitter who created many beautiful sweaters as well as many other beautiful crafts over the years. She was also a creative seamstress and her talents never went unnoticed as her daughters and granddaughter wore her creations at various functions over the years. Some of her most spectacular works came from inventing new sweater patterns for her grandchildren, Mark and Rachel. Norma is survived by her husband, Bill; her daughters, Diane Penny (Mario Cyr), Judy Penny Cooper (Tom Cooper); son, Keir Penny (Rhonda Ivey); and her two grandchildren, Mark and Rachel Rhymes. She is further survived by her brother, Douglas Vail (Donna); nephews, Jimmy and Scott; and niece, Kim; brother-in-law, Lester Penny (Gwennie); niece, Janet. Predeceased at birth by sister, Patricia. Memorial service for Norma Penny will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 13, 2008, in Chants Funeral Home, 564 Alexandra St., Sydney. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Diabetes Association or to a charity of your choice. The family would like to thank the many staff at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Cape Breton Palliative Care, Victoria General Hospital and Alderwood Rest Home. John William Brushett, 82, of Lake Ainslie, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 10, 2008, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney. Born in Glace Bay, he was the son of the late John and Veronica (Newell) Brushett of Burin and Conception Bay, N.L. John and Bonnie operated Ainslie Village Campground for 18 years. He also owned and operated Soldier's Cove Gas and Variety for 13 years. John was an avid gardener and took much pleasure in sharing his gardening experiences. He was a sports and history enthusiast. John loved to skate to polka music, listen to hymns and Newfoundland music. He enjoyed playing cards with family and friends and going for walks with Breagh. He will be sadly missed by his loving wife of 48 years, Veronica 'Bonnie' (MacLellan); daughters, Deborah (Sheldon) MacKay, Denise Brushett (Joe Rossiter), Deanna Brushett (Andrew Woods); brothers, Charles (Theresa), Fabian (Cassie), Danny (Eileen), Frank (Catherine); sisters, Margie (Willie) Gillard, Shirley MacLellan, Jean (Don) Mitchell; cherished grandchildren, Matthew MacKay (Jennifer MacLean), Amanda MacKay (Vi Tang), Brandon MacKay and great grandchild, Logan Tang. Also surviving are sister-in-law, Harriet Brushett and best friends, Danny McLennan and Albert Bouchard. Besides his parents, John was predeceased by a brother, Colin Brushett and brother-in-law, Archie MacLellan. Visitation for John Brushett will be held Sunday 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. A funeral mass will be celebrated Monday at 1 p.m. at Holy Cross Church, Glace Bay, with Fr. Conrad Edwards officiating. Interment will be in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens, Sydney. Donations in John's memory may be made to Victoria County Hospital. Online condolences to the Brushett family are available through www.vjmcgillivray.ca. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Chesley Warren 80, Coxheath - Chesley Maxwell Warren, 80, of Heathview Drive, Coxheath, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 9, 2008, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney. Born in Sydney, he was a son of the late Alphaeus and Rebecca (Russell) Warren. Chesley was a member of St. Albans Anglican Church and in his early years, was very involved with the church. He began his career working beside his father in the boilershop at Sydney Steel and continued working until 1990, when he retired as a safety superintendent. Chesley was a member of the Schooner Curling Club, enjoyed golfing and always looked forward to visits with his sons and their families. Surviving are his wife, Kathleen (Young); sons, Terry (Jennifer), Ottawa, Ont., and Russell (Devon), Ladysmith, B.C.; sister, Kay MacNeil, Sydney; brothers, Bill (Martha) and Lloyd (Evelyn), Sydney, and Bob (Sheila), Dartmouth; grandsons, Joshua and Kyle; and many nieces and nephews. There will be no visitation. A memorial service will be held at St. Albans Anglican Church, Tuesday, Dec. 16 at 11 a.m., with Rev. Brenda Drake and Rev. Fred Rhymes officiating. Interment in St. Mark's Cemetery. Following the service, a reception will take place in the church hall. Memorials may be made to St. Albans Memorial Fund or to a charity of one's choice. Born in Donkin, she was the daughter of the late Agnes and Alex Milley. Mary was a homemaker and a member of St. Luke's United Church and former member of the Donkin Fire Department ladies auxiliary. Mary is survived by her husband, John; daughter, Tanya (Jason), Donkin; son, John (Steve), Sydney; brother, Wayne (Pat), Donkin; sisters, Sally (Donnie) Macleod, Glace Bay, Kathy (Steve) MacAdam, Glace Bay; and two grandchildren, Rebecca and Baillie. Mary was predeceased by her in-laws, Mary and Remond Griffin. Visitation for the late Mary Louis Griffin will be held Sunday, Dec. 14, 2008, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at Patten Funeral Home, 71 Union St., Glace Bay, 849-7520. Funeral service will be Monday, Dec. 15, 2008, at 2 p.m. at St. Luke's United Church, Donkin, Rev. Donald MacDonald officiating. Internment at St. Luke's Cemetery, Donkin.
