Thanks for all your answers - ok -Wilfred's description was sort of easy to follow, then i was thrown by George's comment and now Don has me more lost than I was when i started. Guess I should have explained why I am asking. Again, for this book I'm working (still) on for Xmas - I have some pictures I took when visiting Boularderie and just wanted to write a sentence or paragraph about where the pictures are from. I have signs from Big, Little and plain Bras d'Or. One picture is the water by the little red general store right along the highway, then across the water from there, the big church with cemetery behind it. Some are from the other side of highway (where at edge you could see Seal island bridge - one is a barn that says "Sealladh de Mara" on it. I thought I was in all three places as I was driving around, but now I'm thinking they just put those signs up to confuse tourists like me! Not to mention the confusion of the fact that Bras d"Or lake would seem to me to be ocean. --- On Mon, 12/15/08, Ds20065@aol.com <Ds20065@aol.com> wrote: From: Ds20065@aol.com <Ds20065@aol.com> Subject: Re: [NS-CB] Boularderie and Bras D'or To: caperfca@sympatico.ca, wilfmorley@eastlink.ca, ns-cape-breton@rootsweb.com Date: Monday, December 15, 2008, 5:01 PM According to the Place Names and Places in Nova Scotia 1974 , there are in fact TWO Little Bras d'Or, "The two communities which share this place name, Little Bras d'Or and Little Bras d'Or South Side are located about three miles apart on the east side of the Little Bras d'Or. May as well throw out another question to any locals - I have a picture I took along the main highway heading toward Baddeck (or maybe it was after baddeck heading away from Boularderie - It is a cemetery right along the highway with all wood looking white crosses. I thought it was an Indian cemetery, but my fiance said it couldn't be because indians wouldn't have crosses (?) - there is also a big crucifix stature in the center of cemetery. --- On Mon, 12/15/08, lauren macdonald <swayball20@yahoo.com> wrote: From: lauren macdonald <swayball20@yahoo.com> Subject: Re: [NS-CB] Boularderie and Bras D'or To: caperfca@sympatico.ca, wilfmorley@eastlink.ca, ns-cape-breton@rootsweb.com, Ds20065@aol.com Date: Monday, December 15, 2008, 5:46 PM Thanks for all your answers - ok -Wilfred's description was sort of easy to follow, then i was thrown by George's comment and now Don has me more lost than I was when i started. Hi Lauren, The Acadians had the custom of marking graves with a white cross, sometimes it was fancy and called a French Cross. The native people adopted this custom and it remains today.
