Cape Breton Deaths December 18, 2008 Thursday Rosella Sarah 'Rose' (Morrison) Smith Sept.10, 1918 - Dec. 8, 2008 - Rosella Sarah 'Rose' (Morrison) Smith passed away Monday, Dec. 8, 2008. Born Sept. 10, 1918, and raised in Sydney Mines to Donald and Laura Morrison. Rose fell in love and married Gino Smith of Sydney and together they raised 10 children, six boys, Patrick (P.A.), Tom (Sharon), John (Louisa), Perino, Pino (Audrey), all living in Ontario, Orlando (Renee), living in the Annapolis Valley; and four daughters, Laura (Michael), Ontario, Madonna (Richard), Hall's Harbour N.S., Gina (Ron), Fort McMurray, and Joanne (Fraser), Tangier, N.S. Rose had 20 grandchildren, Wendy and Tracey, Martin and Joanne, Stephen, Troy, Tanya and Todd, Deborah and Peter, Lisa and RoseMarie, Tammy and Richard, Trevor and Georgia-Rose, Adam, Marco and Nolan. As well, Rose had 18 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Gino Smith, father and mother, Donald and Laura Morrison and two brothers, Tom and Johnny Morrison. Rose and Gino raised their family and opened their home to more than 39 foster children on 601 Alexandra St., Sydney and were well known by all their neighbours. Their's was a home that many used as a refuge in troubled times. Rose will be remembered for her tremendous love of cooking and sharing those delicious meals with whoever happened by; her kitchen table always had an extra chair for an unexpected guest. Rose enjoyed dancing, and encouraged her children to enjoy music and dancing. She often said, "Dance whenever you have the chance, it will keep you young!" Rose also enjoyed playing bingo, and often spoke fondly and laughingly of the wonderful times she had with her bingo friends in Sydney. She loved being in the company of her children and friends. In her later years, she was often referred to as 'Gypsy Rose' trave'ling to see her many sons and daughters in Fort McMurray, Ontario and the Annapolis Valley Rose's faith and her prayers to St. Jude gave her tremendous strength and her unconditional love for her family was truly remarkable. She never judged, just offered guidance and help whenever she could. She lived her entire life loving and caring for her family, never regretting a moment. In times of trouble or sickness, she would encourage us to "live one day at a time." Public visitation will be held at Sydney Memorial Chapel, 49 Welton St., Sydney on Sunday evening Dec. 21, 2008, from 7-9 p.m. Mom touched many lives during her 90 years and we look forward to meeting all of you that can attend. Funeral mass will be held at St. Anthony Daniel Church, Alexandra Street, Sydney at 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 22, 2008. Condolences may be sent to the family at sydneymemorialchapel@ns.sympatico.ca. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Keptin Walter Daniel Denny Mi'kmaq Grand Council 58, Eskasoni - Walter Denny, 58, of 41 Denny's Lane, passed away peacefully Wednesday, Dec. 17, 2008; the anniversary of his mother Clara's passing, surrounded by his loving family at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney. Born in Sydney, he was the son of the late Keptin Levi R. and Clara (Gould) Denny. A member of Holy Family parish, Eskasoni, he was extremely committed to his parish, St. Ann's, Chapel Island and above all, his faith. Walter was very active in the Cursillo Movement and the annual St. Ann De-Beaupre pilgrimage, Quebec. He served many years in volunteering his time to organize community events and activities, including, the rink, economic development, as well as serving as president of the Eskasoni Bowling League and coaching in local hockey. An entrepreneur, Walter operated Denny's General Store for 25 years as a partner with his father Levi R. He was employed as supervisor of maintenance and transportation with the Eskasoni School Board for 17 years until retirement in 1994. Walter was active in the MS Society and the CNIB and will be posthumously awarded Role Model of the Year for the Chief Allison M. Bernard Memorial High School, Eskasoni. Surviving are his wife of 39 years, the former Annie Marie Pierro; his 3 sons, Keptin Walter Jr. (Nicole), Dion (Angela), Coun. Leroy (Natalie); a daughter, Shelley Ann (Danny) Stevens; 13 grandchildren, Walter, Cody, Jaylynn, Kelly Anne, Yvette, Dionne, Bethany, Lenita, Leo-Levi, Jolly, John, Danielle, Dan K., all of Eskasoni; 2 brothers, Andrew 'Gally' (Darlene), Chapel Island, Charles 'Charlie' (Rosie), Eskasoni; and 2 sisters, Bridget Ann (Russell), Eskasoni, and Rebecca, Boston. He is also survived by nieces, nephews, several godchildren, by 5 aunts, Molly, Janie, Josephine, Virginia and Margaret and uncle, Ronnie. He was predeceased by a brother, Keptin Leonard P. and by an infant sister. Visitation will take place today, Thursday from 2-4 p.m.at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel, Sydney, resuming this evening at 7 p.m. at the family residence 41 Denny's Lane, Eskasoni. Born in New Waterford, she was a daughter of the late Alex 'Brick' and Susie (MacDonald) Campbell. Kay was a member of the Parish of St. Leonard, Mount Carmel Church. In her early years, Kay worked at Breton Education Centre and the drycleaners. Kay loved playing darts, cards, and going to bingo. She was a member of the Army, Navy, Airforce, New Waterford. Kay will be remembered as a funny, kind, and caring woman. She is survived by her daughter, Valerie (JB), special daughter, Nicole (Lorne MacPherson); two sons, Jo Jo (Linda) and Raymond (Donna), all of New Waterford. Also surviving are seven grandchildren, J.R., Stephen, Jennifer, Amanda, Alishia, Bradley, Raymond Jr.; and three very special great-grandchildren, Matthew, Madison and Emma. Kay is survived by one brother, Joey Campbell; sisters, Dorothy Parr and Helen Campbell, all of New Waterford. Kay is also survived by several nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, Kay was predeceased by her loving husband, Alby Muise and one sister, Mitt Bennett. There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place under the direction of V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford. A funeral mass of celebration for Kay will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 20 in the Parish of St. Leonard, Mount Carmel Church, with Fr. Born in Sydney Mines, she was the daughter of the late John and Alice (Butts) Devoe. A loving wife and devoted mother and grandmother, Bernadette spent the bulk of her time caring for and nurturing her family and friends. She was a member of Trinity Anglican Church and was employed as a supervisor with the Northside School Board cleaning staff for over 20 years. She is survived by her husband, Daniel; daughters, Jean Marie Rendell, Sydney Mines, Linda (Bill), Boularderie; sons, Jimmy (Dawna), Sydney, Greg (Kim), Sydney Mines, and Darrell (Rachel), Sydney Mines. Also surviving are sisters, Doris McLean, Claire (John) Cousins, Linda Devoe (Paul), Louise (Steve) Moran; and brothers, Dennis (Janet), Martin, Kenneth (Marlene), Todd (Lynn); her sister-in-law, Eileen in Boularderie; 11 grandchildren and three great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her brothers, Jimmy and Eugene. At Bernadette's request there will be no visitation. Funeral services will be celebrated Friday at 3 p.m. in the Fillmore and Whitman Funeral Home Chapel, Rev. Peter Rafuse officiating. Burial will be in Trinity Cemetery at a later date. As memorials, donations may be made to the Sydney Cancer Centre at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Catherine Delores (Gallagher) Fraser Toronto, Ont. - It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Catherine Delores (Gallagher) Fraser, 62, Toronto, Ont., on Nov. 21, 2008. Born in Sydney, N.S., she was the daughter of the late Patrick and Emily Gallagher and was predeceased by her husband, Glen in 2007. Left to mourn her loss are daughters, Karrie, Kelly and six grandchildren, all in Ontario; sisters, Mary (Buddy) Wall, Sydney, Lucille, B.C.; brothers, Greg, Ontario, John, New Brunswick and many nieces and nephews. A funeral mass was held Nov. 28, 2008 at St. Maria Goretti Church in Scarborough, Ont. with Fr. Edwin officiating.
