Cape Breton Deaths August 26, 2008 Tuesday Valentine Edwin Singer Feb. 15, 1916-Aug. 25, 2008 Sydney Mines - On Aug. 25, 2008, an honourable and loving gentleman we knew as father, grandfather, and great-grandfather passed away at the Northside General Hospital. Born in Poole, Dorset, England, Ted was the only son of the late Edwin Joseph and Rose Alice (White) Singer. He was a member of Trinity Anglican Church, Sydney Mines. Ted was educated in Courthill Grammar School, where he became captain and was referred to as 'The Math Whiz Kid,' graduating with honours in calculus at the age of 14. Gifted with a good voice, he became head choir boy at Saint Osmond's Cathedral, Bournemouth, and sang solo at Salisbury Cathedral, Salisbury. He graduated from Bournemouth Municipal College with his degree in accounting and was employed by Bowmaker Investments, where he became head accountant at the age of 23, leaving in September 1939 to enlist in the Royal Navy Volunteer Reserves, and participated in the African Campaign of the Second World War. In 1945, while posted to H.M.S. Seaborne in Halifax, he met and married Mora Briers of Sydney Mines; his loving wife of 60 years. They took up residence in Poole, England, where Ted resumed his position as head accountant with Sydenham Printers, a subsidiary company of Bowmaker. Immigrating to Canada in 1955, he was employed as an accountant at Canada Packers, Sydney, until his retirement in 1981. During his retirement years, he served as an auditor for the Harbourview Ladies Auxiliary accounts and served as church secretary for his church, Trinity Anglican. Ted was an ardent sportsman, playing soccer for the Royal Navy and English Soccer League of Bournemouth. He was also accomplished in diving, tennis and cricket. Ted is survived by daughters, Lynda, Halifax, and Meryl (Hector) MacKenzie, Sydney; loving granddaughters, Sarah, Megan and Heather; great-grandchildren, Taylor and Evann and nephews and niece, Ian, Chris and Penny. Besides his wife, Mora, he was predeceased by his sisters, Lillian, Phyllis, Violet and Sylvia. There will be no visitation by request. A funeral service to celebrate his life will be held Wednesday, Aug. 27, 2008, at 2 p.m., in Trinity Anglican Church, Queen Street, Sydney Mines, with the Rev. Peter Rafuse officiating. Interment will be in the Anglican Cemetery, Sydney Mines. Donations in Ted's memory may be made to Trinity Anglican Building Fund, World Vision, or to a charity of choice. Online condolences may be sent to the family at jmjobesfuneralhome@ns.aliantzinc.ca. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Matthew Bradley McIntyre Sydney - It is with profound sadness that we, the parents of Matthew Bradley McIntyre, announce the passing of our infant son on Thursday, Aug. 21, 2008, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney. Matthew will be dearly missed by his parents, Bernie and Jill (Mader) McIntyre; sister, Morgan and brother, Mitchell. He will also be sadly missed by his paternal grandmother, Miriam McIntyre, Reserve Mines, and maternal grandparents, Kenny and Janice Mader, Sydney; uncles, Barry McIntyre, Calgary, and Bradley (Selena) Mader, Edmonton. Cremation has taken place. The family would like to thank the nurses of the LDR unit of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, especially Marlene Weaver. 'Jim' Smith - It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our brother, James J. 'Jim' Smith on July 28, 2008, at the Victoria General Hospital. Jim was the youngest son of the late John R. and Margaret (McKenna) Smith, formerly of Sydney. He is survived by his wife, Judy, Halifax; daughter, Tara (Ryan) Clancey, Halifax, Stephen (Michelle) Smith, Oakville; granddaughter, Ana Clancey and grandson, Caleb Smith. Also surviving are brothers, Robert (Maisie), Bill (Annette); sister, Marie (Calvin) LeDrew, all of Sydney; and brother, John (Jan), Quispamsis, N.B. Jim was founding president of Maritime Travel in 1979 when the company purchased three locations and under his leadership grew to become 81 locations nationwide. He will be sadly missed by all who new and loved this energetic and friendly man. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Beverley Joyce "Snooks" MacLeod 74, Sydney - It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our mother, wife, grandmother, sister and friend on August 23, 2008 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital after a lengthy battle with Parkinson's. Born in Sydney, October 1, 1933, she was the daughter of the late Howard and Jessie (MacSween) Richey. Her love for family and friend was evident in her baking and a good strong cup of tea. You could hear the sound of music in the house all the time She is survived by her loving husband, Parker; daughter, Vivian Chisholm and sons Edward (Liz), Vincent, Donald (Marge), James, and ten grandchildren. She is also survived by sister, Audrey Matheson; half-brother, Tommy McCarthy (Victoria) and half-sisters, Helen Powell (Sydney) and Norma "Toots" Frost (Saint John). She was predeceased by brothers, Douglas "Rocky" and Howard "Bolly". Visitation will take place today (Tuesday, August 26, 2008) from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the S.W. Chant & Son Funeral Home, 564 Alexandra St., Sydney. A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday, August 27, 2008 at the S.W. Chant & Son Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Sheldon Chant officiating. Reception to follow in the funeral home reception area. Interment to take place in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens. Donations may be made to the Canadian Diabetic Association, Parkinson's or Children's Wish Foundation Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Chant's. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Catherine Mildred MacNeil- It is with tremendous sadness that we announce the death of our mother who passed away peacefully on Sunday, Aug. 24 in Victoria County Memorial Hospital. She was a member of St. Columba parish, Iona, and of Sacred Heart Mission, McKinnon's Harbour. Mildred was the last surviving member of her Gillis family, having been predeceased by her parents Hugh N and Mary Lucy Gillis and siblings, Wilfred, Fr. John Hugh, Fr. Marcy, Fr. Lex, Sr. Mary, Rose and John Y. She was also predeceased by her husband, Willy 'Dan Y' and her infant son, Alphonsus. In her early days, Mildred worked as a station master for the CNR, work she loved but not less than her love of Celtic music and a good joke. She is survived by her children, Theresa, Dartmouth, Lily Gillis (Jimmie), Tantallon, Mel (Cathy), Sydney, Leonarda, Antigonish, and Gillis, at home; 11 grandchildren, Melissa, Carolyn and Allison MacNeil, Jennifer, Janine, Angeline, John Hugh, Jacinta and Stephanie Gillis and Jeffrey and Caitlyn MacKinnon. Francis MacKinnon was always a fondly remembered son-in-law. Our gratitude is extended to Fr. Ray Huntley, St. Columba parish and to her special nephew, Fr. Hughie MacNeil, Immaculate Conception and St. Pius X parishes, Sydney Mines, who was always so kind to her. Mildred was able to live her full life in the family home that she created, due in no small way to the kind and compassionate care provided by Lucina Redden, caregiver, and the faithful companionship of Beejee ('Woosus'). Our appreciation also to Dr. Hobbs, Sydney, Dr. Genge and the staff of Victoria County Memorial Hospital, Baddeck. Arrangements are under the direction of MacAskill's Funeral Home, Baddeck. Visitation will be at the parish hall Wednesday, Aug. 27 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will take place at St. Columba parish, Thursday, Aug. 28 at 11 a.m. Family flowers only. Donations may be made to St. Columba parish. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Darryl Paul Evans May 24, 1957-Aug. 22, 2008 - It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of our husband, father, son, brother, uncle and friend, Paul Evans. Bon in Sydney, Paul was the son of Alice and the late Jack Evans. Paul spent the greater part of his adult life in Alberta, in the small town of Canmore. There he and his wife, Kim, successfully ran 'Evans Security,' a security installation business. Paul has a positive outlook on life. He was a man with a kind heart and a generous spirit acknowledged by all who know and loved him. Paul is survived by his wife, Kim (Cameron) and their two children, Michelle and Jason. Paul is also survived by his brothers, Wayne (Joanne), Sambro Head, Kenny (Betty), East Broadway, and sister, Patti (Allan), Charlottetown, P.E.I. As per Paul's wishes, cremation has taken place. A memorial service for family and friends will be held in St. Alban's Parish Church at 2 p.m., Wednesday, Aug. 27.
