Cape Breton Deaths August 17, 2008 Tuesday Leo Patrick Roach 78, Reserve Mines Leo Patrick Roach, 78, of 84 Official Row, Reserve Mines, passed away peacefully on Sunday, August 10, 2008, surrounded by his family, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney. Born in Reserve Mines, he was a son of the late David and Mary Helen (Doucette) Roach. Leo was employed with the Dominion Coal Company and DEVCO for 37 years. He was a former Chief and longtime member of the Reserve Mines Fire Department. He also served on the board of directors of Reserve Mines Credit Union. Leo loved to spend many hours at home working in the garden; and was an avid Montreal Canadians fan. He will be deeply missed by his wife of 53 years, Irene (Gallant) Roach and three sons, Omar (Debbie), Curtis (Anne) and Terry (Rhonda). He is also survived by grandchildren, Jennifer, Kyle, Adam, William and Adison; by sisters, Annie Murphy, Pauline (Ricky) Hinchey and Leona DesRocher; brothers, John and Ronald. He was predeceased by brothers, Norman, Harry, Dan Joe and John Cecil and a sister, Lucy Olive. There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Curry's Funeral Home. Funeral Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated Thursday, August 14, 11 a.m. in St. Joseph's Church, Reserve Mines, Rev. Conrad Edwards officiating. Burial in the parish cemetery. The family extends special thanks to the doctors and nurses at the Glace Bay Healthcare Complex and the Cape Breton Regional Hospital. Email condolences to jmcurry@ns.sympatico.ca. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ John Carl Gillies 54, Port Hood - John Carl Gillies, 54, Port Hood, passed away peacefully at home with family by his side on Aug. 10, 2008. Born in Inverness, he was the son of the late Alex Allan Gillies and Bernice (Wood) Gillies. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Karen, of 33 years; loving children, Kyle (Shannon Graham), Judique, Kelsie, Port Hood; cherished grandson, Hayden Jeffrey Gillies; beloved brothers, Doug, Kyte, Bernard (Rosemary), Port Hood; loyal sisters, Shirley, Sudbury, Mass., Mary (Terrence - great friend and brother-in-law) MacNeil, Port Hood; nephews, Lance, Chad; nieces, Jenna, Justine and Marissa. He was employed by the Department of Justice, beginning in 1986 at the Port Hood Correctional Center as superintendent and in 1990 became fine options officer with the Community Corrections Office at Port Hawkesbury where he served all of Cape Breton Island and three Eastern counties of Nova Scotia. In 1992, he accepted the position of probation officer where he was employed until the time of his death. He was an integral part of Corrections and while in the capacity as Officer of Community Corrections, he served as youth specialist representing the Port Hawkesbury office and also served as a representative on the Interagency Committee in Waycobah, Inverness and Port Hawkesbury. He was highly respected in all communities that he served and was known as a man of faith, integrity and fairness and was loved by all his clients, co-workers and judiciary. This has manifested itself in the many calls and cards received from all during his illness. He was an active member of the Port Hood Volunteer Fire Department, First Responders, KOC, past member of St. Peter's Parish Council and sat on the board of directors of Our Mother of Sorrows Shrine in Mabou. In addition, he was actively involved in the Challenge and Cursillo movements. He took an avid interest in playing guitar and in his children's athletic and educational endeavors. He was a well-respected member of the community and will be dearly missed by all who knew him. Visitation will be Tuesday, 7-9 p.m., and Wednesday, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at Port Hood Community Funeral Home. Funeral mass will be held 2 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 14 in St. Peter's Church, Port Hood, with Rev. R.D. Smith officiating. Burial in St. Peter's Cemetery. Donations may be made to the St. Peter's Cemetery Fund. He was a son of Ruby MacVicar and the late Stewart MacVicar of Sydney. He touched many hearts with his strong faith and warm smile. He was an inspiration and great friend to all. Ray loved horses and horse racing. He also had a great passion for hockey. His favourite team was the Montreal Canadians. Ray's greatest joy was working at the Alberta Children's Hospital for thirty years. Ray was predeceased by his first wife, Phyllis. Ray is survived by sons, Kelly (Sandi), Kenny (Terry) and Kevin; his loving wife, Carol; stepsons, Adam (Sally) and Robin (Meghan); several grandchildren; brother, Clem (Barb) MacVicar; sister, Ruth (Eddie) Hillman and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Funeral services are taking place today (August 12, 2008) in Calgary, Alberta. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Claire Crory 84 - Claire Crory, 84, passed away peacefully on Sunday, August 3, 2008. Born January 28, 1924, she was the daughter of Andrew and Catherine (MacArthur) MacGillivray. She is survived by her daughters, Maureen and Patricia and granddaughter, Jennifer, Halifax and sisters, Rita Callaghan, Ontario and Anne MacGillivray, Sydney. She was predeceased by her husband of 54 years, Ronald Crory; son, Ronald Jr. and brothers, Steven, Toronto, and Alex, Winnipeg. The funeral was held was 1-3 p.m. at the Atlantic Chapel in Halifax and the funeral service was conducted by father James Haughn. Burial took place at St. John's Cemetery in Halifax.
