Eavis 90, North Sydney - It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Ellen Jane Eavis, 90, resident of Sunrise Drive, George's River, on Wednesday, Aug. 6, 2008, at the Northside General Hospital. Born in Ramea, N.L., she was a daughter of the late Timothy and Suzanna (Sibley) Hatcher and she was the last surviving member of her immediate family. She was a lifelong member of St. Matthew Wesley United Church, North Sydney. She is survived by three daughters, Lana (Cordell) Brown, George's River, Karen (Eugene) Benac, North Sydney, Lucille (Skip) Colwell, Dartmouth; four sons, Clayton (Joan) Eavis, Oshawa, Glen (Noreen) Eavis, Chesley Jr. (Jean) Eavis, both of North Sydney, Edwin (Judy) Eavis, Newmarket, Ont. Also surviving are 16 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Chesley Eavis, an infant son, Wayne Eavis, sisters, Jessie (Dominic) Augustus, Carrie (Bill) Keeping, Florence (Wallace) Kendall, Olive (George) Payne, brothers, Joe (Violet) Hatcher, George (Olive) Hatcher, Clem (Melita) Hatcher and Russell Hatcher. Visitation will be held 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Friday in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. The funeral service will be held 2 p.m., Saturday at St. Matthew Wesley United Church with Rev. David Luker officiating. Burial to follow at Lakeside Cemetery, North Sydney. Feb. 16, 1913-Aug. 6, 2008 - Wallace Wesley (Nick) Clare, 95, of Victoria Mines, passed away Aug. 6, 2008, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, with his family by his side. Born in Sackville, N.B., to the late Walter and Daphne (Bickerton) Clare. Nick moved to Sydney at an early age. He has resided in Victoria Mines since 1947. Nick worked in the roll shop department of the former Sydney Steel Corp. He retired at age 58 and enjoyed many years of his retirement working in his basement workshop turning out wooden crafts which he happily gave away to family and friends. Nick is survived by his daughter, Joyce, Victoria Mines; son, Wally (Gail), Howie Centre. Papa is also survived by his three devoted grandchildren, Lauren (Sean) Duggan, Howie Centre, Mark (Lauren), Yarmouth, and Kevin, Howie Centre. Papa is also survived by his precious great-grandson, Cameron Duggan; also by his sister, Dorothy, Ontario. Dad lived his life for his family. He was a wonderful father, grandfather and great-grandfather and will be dearly missed. Nick was a veteran of the Second World War and served overseas for over four years with the Royal Canadian Engineers. He served in England, France, Belgium and Holland. He was a proud member of Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 128, Whitney Pier. Besides his parents, Nick was predeceased by his wife, Catherine (Kay) Burns on Feb. 23, 1996. He was also predeceased by brothers, Raleigh, Donald, Gerald, Clive, Vance, Bucky, sisters, Miriam (Sis), Katherine and Grace. It is Dad's request, there will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place under the direction of McLellan Brothers Funeral Home, 3183 Plummer Ave., New Waterford, N.S., 862-7500. A memorial service will take place 2 p.m., Sunday, Aug. 10 in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Jackie MacDonald officiating. Private family burial to follow at Forest Haven Memorial Gardens. Dad loved his hugs and kisses so much. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Margaret Emily (MacInnis) Campbell 87, Sydney - It is with heavy hearts that we announce Margaret's passing on Tuesday, Aug. 5, 2008, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney. Born on June 21, 1921, she was the daughter of the late Dan and Jane (MacEachern) MacInnis of Alexandra Street. Margaret was a CWL member of St. Anthony Daniel parish for close to 50 years. Mom could be seen quite frequently sweeping the curb in front of her Alexandra Street home. "Never be late after it stormed or she would be out with the shovel." She loved digging in her flower and vegetable gardens, giving most of her crops away to friends and family. A mother who gave everlasting love even when Alzheimer's took away a huge part of her existence. She never complained even though we knew she was suffering with her illnesses. She is survived by her daughter, Cecilia; son-in-law, Brian Cooke, whom she loved dearly; son, Donnie (Agnes McNally); grandchildren, Anne Louise and Stephen Campbell and David Cooke; also a sister, Frances Peinsznski. She was predeceased by her husband, Dannie, sisters, Mary and Cecilia MacInnis, Lily (John MacKinnon), Shirley (Gordie MacKinnon), Theresa 'Nuddy' MacDonald, brothers, Jimmie (Kay), Donald (Marion), Johnnie Dan (Rita) and Alexander. Surrounded by her family and earthly Angels, the staff of Alderwood Rest Home, Baddeck. Ellen was born in Motherwell, Scotland, and came to Sydney in 1921 with her parents, the late James and Margaret Bancks. Ellen was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Ellen was prominent in music circles throughout the Sydney area and was the soloist at Trinity United Church and Bethel Presbyterian Church for many years. Ellen was a past member of the John Geddie Women's Missionary Society of Bethel Presbyterian Church, Sydney, was a member of the IODE Louisbourg Chapter, a lifetime member of Fort McMurray Chapter No. 137 Order of the Eastern Star and was a past president of the Sydney City Hospital Ann Martin Auxiliary. Besides her parents, Ellen was predeceased by her husband, Russell Munro, sister, Margaret Fraser, brothers, Maurice, Ainslie and William in infancy as well as two grandchildren, Christopher and Terri-Lynn. Surviving are daughters, Paula Smith (Michael), Yarmouth, Margaret (Wayne), Goose Cove, and Julie MacLeod, Moncton; eight grandchildren, Jay, Eric and Kimberley Anderson, Yarmouth, Kelly Anderson, Surrey B.C., Travis, Shawn MacLeod, Vancouver, B.C.; Lindsay MacLeod, Montreal, and Carla Hamel, Fort McMurray; and 11 great grandchildren; as well as a special sister-in-law, Marion Bancks; nieces, Judy Budden, Jamie Bancks, Sheila Durdle and Debbie Lewis. Port Colborne, Ont., announces his passing after a short and courageous battle with cancer. John passed away quietly on Sunday, Aug. 3, 2008, in the company of his wife Donna and son Michael in the Welland Hospital. Born on July 11, 1946, in North Sydney, he was a son of Jeanne (Regan) and the late Byron MacDonald. John spent his younger years in his beloved Cape Breton before joining the Royal Canadian Navy in 1964, where he began his career as an electrician. A lifelong member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, his work took him to many places across Canada before he and his family settled in Port Colborne, Ont. John is survived and will be sadly missed by wife, Donna (Murray); sons, Michael and David, Port Colborne, Bill (William) and wife Tanya and John and wife Melissa, Prince Albert, Sask.; grandchildren, Trystan, Taylor, Jillian and Scotia; mother, Jeanne and brothers, Mike and Hugh, all of Halifax; family members, Dawn and Dave Murray, Sydney, Australia, Tara, Grant and Audra Sterken, Acton, Ont., and Beverly and Ilanna Wise, Ohio. John was a member of the United Church of Canada and a past member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch No. 19, The Orange Lodge and the Northern Yacht Club in North Sydney. Online condolences may be e-mailed to therebel100@live.ca. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Wilfred Edward Biggs Age 61 - After a courageous 18-month battle with brain cancer, Wil passed away peacefully and with dignity with his wife, Elizabeth at his side and his family close by on Aug. 5, 2008, in the Oromocto Public Hospital. Wil was born Nov. 23, 1946, in Longueuil, Que. As a teenager, Wil was an army cadet and from there he moved on to the militia and joined 30 Field Squadron RCE. On April 28, 1967, Wilfred joined the regular force as a sapper with his first posting being Gagetown, N.B. He gave 37 years as a military engineer and was best known to most of his comrades as Bill Biggs - W.O.W.E.! He travelled throughout his military career, with postings to Germany 1971, Petawawa 1974, Cornwallis 1977, Alert 1978, Gagetown 1980, Ottawa 1984, Chilliwack 1992 and Oromocto 1997, where he remained until his retirement in 2002. Wilfred enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, especially his grandchildren. He loved to work with his hands, was passionate about gardening and loved to make people laugh. Upon retirement from the military, Dec. 13, 2002, Wilfred joined the team at Kent Building Supplies in Fredericton, N.B. He was nicknamed 'The gate keeper.' Upon semi-retirement he travelled to Ireland and Paris, France with friends and family. He was predeceased by mother, Beryl (Pat) Victoria (Brown) and son, Douglas Arthur Biggs. Born in Sydney, N.S., March 13, 1954, he was the son of the late William Valentine and Ulgisse Cooke. Ricky was a member of Christ Church, George Street, Sydney. Ricky loved gardening and will be remembered for being big hearted. Surviving are his two brothers, Blaire (Cynthia) Cooke, Gary (Brenda) Cooke and their families; sister in-law, Valarie Cooke. Ricky is also survived by his three children, Leon, Christopher and Marie Cooke and a nephew, Billy. Besides his parents, Ricky was predeceased by his brother, William Cooke. Funeral service to celebrate Ricky's life will be held Friday, Aug. 8 at 2 p.m. at the Pier Community Funeral Home in the All Faith Chapel, 1092 Victoria Rd., with entrance on Church Street, Whitney Pier. Visitation will be from 1-2 p.m. with funeral service to follow. Interment will take place at Forest Haven Memorial Gardens, Sydney, following the funeral service.
