Cape Breton Deaths August 15, 2008 Friday Ivan Lambert Matthews 79, North Sydney - It is with heartfelt sadness the family announce the sudden passing of Ivan Lambert Matthews, 79, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother and uncle, Thursday, Aug. 14, 2008, at the Victoria County Memorial Hospital, Baddeck, surrounded by his loving family. Born in Port aux Basques, Ivan was the son of the late Ernest and Mylida (Kendall) Matthews. He was a member of St. John the Baptist Anglican Church, North Sydney and also worked there as a janitor for a period of time. For many years Ivan operated the canteen at the North Sydney Community Forum. He was a member of the Fulton Orange Lodge, North Sydney and an Honorary member of the North Sydney Fire Department and the Kinsmen Club of North Sydney. He is survived by his loving wife, Sarah (Dodge) Matthews; his daughters, Lila (Joe) Howell, Marilyn Matthews, both of North Sydney; and son, Ivan (Nadine) Matthews, also of North Sydney; his pride and joy, his five grandchildren, Rachel Arneil, Alicia and Michael Howell, Kailin and Kelsey Matthews; his sister, Mary Sheaves, North Sydney and brother, Richard (Sharon) Matthews; sister, Ernestine (Walter) Jesso, Winnipeg; his two stepsisters, Madeline (Banks) MacLean, North Sydney, and Gloria (Ray) Rolfe, Sydney; stepbrother, Garland Lily, Sydney and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother, Gordon Matthews, sister-in-law, Claretta Matthews, brother-in-law, Eric Sheaves and stepmother, Alice Lily Matthews. Visitation for Ivan will be held Sunday, Aug. 17 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. Funeral service 11 a.m. Monday, Aug. 18 at St. John the Baptist Anglican Church with Rev. Carl Fraser officiating. Burial to follow in Lakeside Cemetery, North Sydney. Online condolences may be sent to info@wjdooley.com. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Caroline Elizabeth Williams 68, New Waterford - It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Caroline Elizabeth Williams on Wednesday, Aug. 13, 2008, at her home. Born in Dominion, she was the daughter of the late Andrew and Susan (Campbell) MacNeil. Caroline was a homemaker and was well known for her wonderful cooking and baking. Family was very important to her and she especially loved spending time with her grandchildren. Caroline is survived by her daughters, Susan (Ricky) Rideout, Leitches Creek, and Anna (Doug) Wall, Howie Centre; sons, Charlie (Marie), Sydney, Stephen and Darren, New Waterford; grandchildren, Vanessa, Pamela, Stephen, Thera, Michelle, Lori, Jennifer, Amber, Erin and great-grandchildren, Hayley and Jaiden. She is also survived by her brothers, Andrew, Willie (Wendy), Cordell (Joanne), all of New Waterford, Gary and John, Dartmouth. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Donald McLellan and brother, Donald. Visitation for Caroline will take place Friday, Aug. 15 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at McLellan Brothers Funeral Home, 3183 Plummer Ave., New Waterford, N.S., 862-7500. A funeral service to celebrate Caroline's life will be held Saturday, Aug. 16, 11 a.m. in the funeral home chapel. Cremation will follow with burial in St. Michael's Cemetery. Online condolences may be sent to the family at www.mclellanfuneralhome.com. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Patrick Fabian LeBlanc 52 - The family of Patrick Fabian LeBlanc regretfully announce his passing at the Charlotte County Hospital in St. Stephen, New Brunswick, on August 10, 2008. Patrick, better known as Paddy to his family and friends, will always be remembered as a kind and considerate gentleman who was always ready to offer a helping hand to any who needed one. He was born in Sydney on July 8, 1956, the son of Bernadette E. (Burke) and the late John J. LeBlanc. Paddy was a graduate of Riverview Rural High School in 1973 and from there went to the Dalhousie School of Pharmacy in Halifax from which he graduated in 1978. He went on to work for several of the pharmacy store chains over the years as well as starting several small privately owned pharmacies, most recently on Campabello Island in New Brunswick. Regrettably, he was forced to retire from his store in 2000 due to mounting medical problems which were brought on by lingering injuries received in a serious motor vehicle accident 21 years ago. Paddy is survived by his wife, Brenda Anne (Lewin) LeBlanc, Oak Bay, N.B.; daughters, Kristen, Sydney and Jenna, Oak Bay; mother, Bernadette, Sydney; sister, Florence Young (Robert), Sydney; brothers, Bernard and Donald (Debbie), Ontario; aunt, Mary Burke, Sydney and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Paddy was also survived by his mother and father-in-law, Cecial and Marian Lewin and sister-in-law, Donna Lewin, Halifax. Paddy was predeceased by his father, John J. LeBlanc; brother, John Francis LeBlanc and sister-in-law, Russette (Ball) LeBlanc. There was a wake and funeral service held for Paddy at the S.O. Mehan and Son Funeral Home in St. Stephen, N.B. with the funeral service held on Tuesday, August 12 at 10 a.m. Cremation has taken place. There will be a memorial service for Paddy held at St. Anthony Daniel Church on Alexandra Street in Sydney on Wednesday, August 20, 2008 at 11 a.m. with a reception in the church hall immediately following the service. Paddy, you will be sadly missed, fondly remembered and always loved. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Margaret Ellen MacNeil 85, New Victoria - We regret to announce the death of Margaret Ellen MacNeil of New Victoria on Aug. 13, 2008, at the Glace Bay General Hospital, after a lengthy illness. Born in Ingonish, she was the eldest daughter of the late Lillian and Joseph MacKinnon. She will be sadly missed by her children, Brenda MacNeil, New Victoria, Louise (Reg) Gewer, New Victoria, Malcolm Jr. (Nina) MacNeil, Whitney Pier, Danny 'Dikey' (Eunice) MacNeil, Sydney River, Francis MacNeil, Edmonton, Alta.; her sisters, Annie Mae MacKinnon, Melinda MacKinnon, both of New Victoria, Evelyn (Jimmy) Lund, Dutch Brook; her brothers, Jack MacKinnon, Whitney Pier, Billy (Eileen) MacKinnon, Peter (Terry) MacKinnon, both of Sydney. Margaret is also survived by 12 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her sisters, Mamie Taylor, Sabina MacKinnon, brothers, Phillip, Mikey, Danny and one grandson, Jody Gewer. In co-operation with V.J. Online condolences may be sent to our webpage at www.chantfuneralhome.com. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ William Henry 'Willy' Cooke 88, Reserve Mines - William Henry 'Willy' Cooke of 26 Official Row, Reserve Mines, passed away peacefully Wednesday, Aug. 13, 2008, at home surrounded by his family. Born in Reserve Mines and the last member of his immediate family, he was the son of the late Henry and Cecilia (Deveaux) Cook. William was a member of St. Joseph's Church, Reserve Mines. He was employed by the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company for 37 years. William also was a representative of Heritage Memorial Company. William was a veteran of the Second World War serving overseas with the Royal Canadian Air Force. He was a Third Degree Member of the KOC, Council 1953, Glace Bay and also a member of the RCL Branch 2, Reserve Mines. Willy was known as an avid sports fan and spent most of his life living and working in his community, where he was well known and respected. While a member of the RCAF Willy gathered many stories and was very open to sharing them with others. Throughout his life he was an active member of his parish. Known for his humour and storytelling, he will be forever loved and sadly missed by family and friends. William is survived by his children, Cheryl (Colin) MacGillivray, Milton (Shelly), Valerie, Blair (Rose Romard), Donald, Paul (Deirdre), Priscilla (Graham) Cooke; daughter-in-law, Linda Cooke; 17 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. William was predeceased by his wife, the former Mary Agnes 'Naddie' Gallant and two sons, Wendell and Wayne. Visitation will be held Friday, Aug. 15 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. The funeral mass officiated by Rev. Leo Boone will be celebrated Saturday at 10 a.m. in St. Joseph's Church, Reserve Mines followed by interment in the parish cemetery. All are invited to join the family for reception in the church hall. Members of the KOC, Council 1953, Glace Bay will hold a prayer service at the funeral home on Friday evening at 7:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of William may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or St. Joseph's Cemetery fund. Born in Margaree Valley, she was the daughter of Garfield and Olive (Philips) Burton. She loved spending time in her beloved home of Margaree, puttering around doing wood working (building furniture) and grooming her expansive gardens. Olive was active in the Eastern Star in her younger years and in later years, she enjoyed playing cards at Louisbourg Seniors. Olive was predeceased by her parents, sister, Lillian, first husband, George Jabez Crowdis and her second husband, Clifton Shaw. She is survived by her devoted children, Gwen (Joe Guillena), Sydney, Glenn Crowdis (Valerie), Sydney, and George Kimball Crowdis, Dartmouth; grandchildren, Bradley, Jeanne, Loribeth and Jody and great-grandchildren, Kaitlyn, Christina, Shelbie and Kinnon. She is also predeceased and survived by many nieces and nephews from Mass/New Hampshire, St. Stephen, N.B. and Margaree Valley. Visitation will take place Friday, Aug. 15 from 7-9 p.m. at the S.W. Chant & Son Funeral Home, 564 Alexandra St., Sydney. An additional visitation will take place Saturday, Aug.16 from 1-2:30 p.m. in Wilson United Church, Margaree Centre. Funeral service will be held in the church at 3 p.m. Burial to follow. Reception after burial in the Wilson United Church Hall.
