Cape Breton Deaths August 27, 2008 Wednesday Theresa MacLeod 79, Sydney - It is with heavy hearts that we regret to announce the passing of our dear mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend of Sydney, N.S. which occurred August 23, 2008 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney. She was the daughter of the late Anthony and Angelina MacDonald of D'Escousse. She was heavy involved all her life with the Liberal association. She was also a cursiesta and was involved in many aspects of the church and community. She was very involved with the CWLs of both Sacred Heart Church and St. Anthony Daniel Church, Sydney, and the friends of the MacGillivray Guest Home. She was also a member of the Steelworkers and Sydney Pensioners Club. Theresa was an associate member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch No. 12 and belonged to the branch's ladies auxiliary. Theresa leaves to mourn her children, daughter, Gail (George) Rossos; son, Greg (Helena); grandchildren, Lewis (Cindy), Belinda (Clint) MacLean, David, Daniel, George, all of Sydney, and Donna (Bernie) Cameron, Havelock, N.B; great-grandchildren, Kaitlin, Breaghna, Krysta, Jade, Amber and Scarlett; sister, Ethel (Freddie) Martin; sister in-law, Loretta MacDonald and Mary MacDonald. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews who loved her dearly and whom she kept in constant contact with by phone and Internet. Also her constant companion and friend her dog, Chippy. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her loving husband Lewis, brothers, Harold and Irving and sisters, Ella, Janette, Cecilia and Violet. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Chant's. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Lawrence Allan Desrosiers 44, New Waterford - It is with great sadness and heartache that we announce the passing of our husband, son and brother who passed away on Monday, Aug. 25, 2008, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney. Born in Glace Bay, he was the son of William (B. George) and the late Theresa Suzanne (McNeil) Desrosiers. An ironworker by trade, Lawrence was a respected worker and a proud member of the Ironworkers Local Union 752. He was a well respected and dedicated member of the New Waterford Volunteer Fire Department. He was a handyman who could put his hand to most anything, and was always ready to lend a helping hand to anyone in need. Lawrence also enjoyed all sports, spending time walking his dogs and lobster fishing with his good buddy, Roddy Jeffrie. Lawrence also took part in the 'Polar Bear Swim' every year. Lawrence is survived by his loving wife and best friend, Sonya (Brenna) Desrosiers; his father-in-law, Johnny Brenna; three sisters, Margaret (Tootsie) Desrosiers, New Waterford, Cathy (Fred) Kerr, Bradford, Ont., Lisa (Barry) Gillis, Sackville, N.S.; six brothers, Greg (Cheryl), Johnny (Wendy), Billy (Kathleen), all of New Waterford, Brent, Fort McMurray, Neil (Cheryl Ann), Pembroke, Mass., and Kenny, Edmonton, Atla. He is also survived by 21 nieces and nephews, four great-nieces and nephews and a special uncle and aunt, Lawrence and Betty McNeil, Scarborough, Ont. Lawrence will never be forgotten by his two faithful companions, Breton and Caper, whom he rescued from the SPCA. Lawrence was predeceased by his mother, Theresa and his mother-in-law, Carol Brenna. Visitation for Lawrence will take place Thursday, Aug. 28, 2008, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at McLellan Brothers Funeral Home, 3183 Plummer Avenue, New Waterford, N.S., 862-7500. A funeral mass to celebrate Lawrence's life will take place Friday, Aug. 29, 2008, at 11 a.m. in the Parish of St. Leonard/Mount Carmel Church with Fr. Doug MacDonald officiating. Interment will be in St. Agnes Cemetery. Following mass, a luncheon will be held in the New Waterford fire hall, all are invited. Born in Lally Cove, Nfld., he was a son of the late John and Ellen (Matthews) Drake. He served in the Royal Canadian Navy from 1939-1945. He fished out of Louisbourg for many years before joining Parks Canada at the Fortress Louisbourg, from where he retired in 1985. He is survived by daughter, Rose (Chal), Louisbourg; son, George, Marion Bridge; great- granddaughter, Katherine Rose Thomson, Louisbourg; his sister, Mrs. Dorothy Mills Sydney; brother, Murdock, Dartmouth; and grandson, David Neal, Oakville, Ont. He was predeceased by his wife, Rose Drake, brothers, Lawrence, Jack, Charles, Willoughby and George (in infancy). He was also predeceased by grandson, Drake Denomme. He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting and fishing. He loved to play cards and time at the casino looking for the royal flush. There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place. Julia passed away on Monday, Aug. 25, 2008, at the Glace Bay Health Care Complex. Born in Donkin, she was the daughter of the late Allan and Gertrude (MacKenzie) MacInnis of Schooner Pond. She was a member of St. Gregory's Catholic Church, Donkin. Julia had a quick wit and loved to reminisce about the old days on the farm, especially riding her horse 'Fleet.' She was loved and will be greatly missed by all, especially her children. Julia is survived by daughters, Beverly (Bob) MacDougall and Judy (Melvin) Bushen; sons, Christopher (Terri Leigh) Briffett, Peter (Diane) Briffett and John Briffett and cherished grandchildren, Kira, Ethan, Tyler, Sasha, Meghan, Charice and Eddy. Also surviving are sisters, Agnes, Mary, Irene, Cecilia; brothers, Pius, Paul and Bernard and many nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, Julia was predeceased by her husband, Joseph, sons, Edward, Freddy and daughter, Bernadette, sisters, Josephine and Annie and brothers, Allan, Dan Angus, Joe and Vincent. There will be no visitation for Julia Briffett. Cremation has taken place under the care and direction of V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. A funeral mass will be celebrated 11 a.m., Thursday, Aug. 28, 2008, at St. Gregory's Church, Donkin with Fr. Leo Boone officiating. The family will greet friends and relatives at the church half hour before the service. A private interment will be held in the parish cemetery. Musgrave Ashland, Mass. - Vernon Boyd Musgrave, 60, died Wednesday, Aug. 13, 2008. Born in North Sydney, he was the son of Willena (Boyd) Musgrave and the late James Musgrave of Framingham, Mass. He moved to the U.S. at age seven. He was a devoted husband, son, father and poppy. His memory lives on in his wife, Maureen; his mother, Willena; his daughters, Melissa (John Horan), Tena (John Gallinagh); his son, Adam (Paula) and his six grandchildren. He was brother of the late Donald Musgrave (Sandi), Chelmsford, Mass.
