I need some serious help! I'm trying to tie all the information I have on my LeRoy andcestors and I'm really confused. I descend from Charles LeRoy and Marie Charlotte Chauvet. On the 1752 census it states he was born in Paris about 1698. He is 52. She is also 52 and a native of laCadia. They are found in Baye des Espagnols and it further states that they have been in the Colony for 2 years July 22. Land given verbally etc. Is the 2 years mentioned, 2 years in Bay des Espagnols? Is that part of Nova Scotia isle and not Cape Breton isle? Is that LaCadia? What was the early name (if any) for Halifax or Annapolis? When LaCadia is mentioned could it be anywhere, Nfld, NS, CB, PEI,St Pierre & Miquilon. I get so confused by all the different names used at different times. I'm confused by the fact it states she was born in laCadia, but they were only in the colony 2 years. Am I missing something or was she born somewhere else in La Cadia? Another question...Jean dit LaLiberte LeRoy who married Marie Aubois. Is there any record that they were in Paris, France prior to 1700? I have found many records showing Jean & Marie as the parents of Charles, b 1698 (I believe based on the census), born in Paris who married Marie Charlotte Chauvet. The 1752 states he was born in Paris. Is/was there a Paris in Nova Scotia? Was there ever a deportation prior to 1755 when the British were trying to move into the territory. so many questions........ugh!! Again, any help is greatly appreciated. You can tell I'm not a native. :) Karen visit my pond at www.karenspond.com
Yikes...poor you! La Cadia may be L'Acadie....which is the French for the land of the Acadians...so you could be talking Grand Pre, Nova Scotia, or Port Royal (Annapolis Royal), Nova Scotia, or Louisbourg, Nova Scotia, or many other different places. If I may make a suggestion, send an e-mail to the Annapolis Heritage Society with the names of your family and see if they have them in their settlers of Port Royal/Annapolis Royal. Or you can phone them at (902) 532-7754. Ryan Scranton is the Executive Director and the Society has genealogist working every afternoon. For a very small charge they could look and see and maybe save you acres of frustration. I am the vice chair of the Annapolis Heritage Society and I know we do this kind of thing. The e-mail address is: historic@ns.aliantzinc.ca Good luck! Jane Nicholson On 2-Aug-08, at 8:29 PM, Karen M wrote: > I need some serious help! Land given verbally etc. At one time, I believe the Sydney, NS, area was known as Spanish Bay. There is a river named Spanish River today, about 2.75 miles west of the Sydney boundary proper. Perhaps you could look up some early history of Sydney, NS, and area, which might answer some of your questions. I don't live in that area anymore, but the Cape Breton Genweb site might help. Cheers, Jim
