Cape Breton Deaths August 14, 2008 Thursday George Lawrence MacDonald Aug. 13, 1932 - Aug. 13, 2008 - With heavy hearts, we the family announce the passing of our beloved partner, father, grandfather, brother and uncle. Born in Louisbourg, Lawrence was the dear son of the late Alex and Jenny (Kendall) MacDonald. He served three years in the Canadian Army. Most of Lawrence's working years were spent as a very skilled bricklayer - a job he enjoyed and excelled in. A very outgoing and personable man, Lawrence was very proud of his Celtic roots and loved to reminisce with all those he came in contact with. He was a very dedicated member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 62 and for many years served as president. He was a faithful adherent of Zion Presbyterian Church, Louisbourg, and a former choir member and served on the board of managers. Lawrence also worked diligently on behalf of the Willow Grove Cemetery Committee. In his early years Lawrence was active in Louisbourg ladies lob ball league, coaching the Louisbourg Eagles. He was an avid Blue Jays and Detroit Red Wings fan. Lawrence truly enjoyed spending time with his family and the many get togethers in the 'garage'. Lawrence is survived by his lovingly devoted partner of 22 years, Florence; his daughter, Debbie, Sydney; son, Scott, Louisbourg; his grandchildren, Natasha, Christopher, Jacob and Brody; great grandson, Kyle. Lawrence was also poppy to Blair and Douglas. He is also survived by his brothers, Sandy (Carmella), Glace Bay, Johnnie (Linda), Louisbourg; his sisters, Sally (Ed) Mellun, Ontario, Marion (Jerry) Hanley, Roberta Perry, Elda (Abe) Phillips, all of Louisbourg, Jessica (Marty) Lyons, Kansas and many nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, Lawrence was predeceased by a son in infancy, George Brock, brothers, Stevie and Jackie, sisters, Jeanette, Peggy, Thelma, Annie and Eileen. Visitation will take place Thursday, Aug. 14 at the Zion Presbyterian Church, Louisbourg from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral service will take place 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 15 at the Zion Presbyterian Church, with Pastor Kevin Richardson officiating. Interment to follow in Willow Grove Cemetery. Family flowers only. Memorial donations may be made to Willow Grove Cemetery or Zion Presbyterian Church. Born in Burtts Corner, N.B., he was the son of the late Bernard and Dora (Bird) Hine. He was a member of the armed forces and travelled overseas, and later became a plumber by trade. Donnie is survived by his two sons, Eric (Sharon) Hine, Edmonton, Alta., Jamie Hine, New Brunswick; three sisters, Marion (Eldred) Love, Mactaquac, N.B., Jean Branscombe, Fredericton, N.B., Doris (Andrew) Berna, Kamloops, B.C.; brother, Richard 'Rick' (Debbie) Hine; mother of his children, Elva Hine as well as three grandchildren, Brian, Rodney and Crystal Hine. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his brother Lloyd. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 16 at his previous residence in Ingonish, N.S. Professor Emeritus Harvard University Faculty of Medicine. It is with sadness the family of John Lemuel Bethune PhD, formerly of Baddeck, N.S. announce his recent passing. He was a graduate of Acadia and Clarke University, Wooster, Mass., earning his MA, MSc and PhD degrees. He was associated with Harvard University for over 30 years, first as a research associate, then as a tenured professor of Radiology in Biochemistry where he conducted research at Brigham & Women's Hospital in Boston. He co-authored 35 research papers, published in numerous scientific journals including the National Academy of Sciences. In the 1970s his pioneering research into angiogenesis contributed to the development of Avastin, a drug now used in the treatment of cancer and macular degeneration. Later, his primary research in molecular transport provided previously unknown knowledge about how certain molecules interact with proteins, laying the groundwork for designing drugs to combat cancer. In Baddeck, he is fondly remembered as the author of the Baddeck Academy school song and for his efforts in saving hundreds of volumes of books from the Baddeck Public Library during a disastrous fire in 1939. Lem is survived by his widow, Nancy, Barnstable, Mass.; brother, Norman, Baddeck; sister-in-law, Marie Bethune and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, Norman and Danenia (Dolly) Bethune and brother, Crosson. Burial took place in Barnstable. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Alice Cesario - Alice Vickers Cesario, 96, of Mays Landing died Aug. 8, 2008. Born in Sydney Mines, N.S., she came alone to the United States at the age of 15. Later she started her own coffee shop in New York. By the time she retired to raise her family, she owned three restaurants. She married Eugene Cesario and raised her children in Queens, N.Y. Alice had three children, three foster children, and eight grandchildren. She had six brothers all deceased and six sisters, two of which are still living. Alice also had nine great-grandchildren and several great great-grandchildren living in Canada. She loved to cook and loved playing the lottery. She enjoyed talking to people and sharing her experiences during the Second World War and the Depression. She still had a very active mind and enjoyed discussing current topics. Visiting hours will be held Aug. 15, at 2 p.m. at Carmela United Methodist Church.
