Cape Breton Deaths August 19, 2008 Tuesday Alice Mullins 91, Bateston - It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Alice Theresa Mullins on Sunday, Aug. 17, 2008, at her home in Bateston, surrounded by her family. Born March 3, 1917, Alice was the daughter of the late Patrick and Sarah (Gallant) Burke. She was a member of the Immaculate Conception parish in Main-a-Dieu and also a member of the Catholic Women's League. Alice was postmistress for many years, running the post office from her home in Bateston. She always enjoyed when people from the community would drop by for a visit or a game of cards. Most of all, Alice enjoyed spending time with her family. She was proud of her home in Bateston, which she shared for 65 years with her husband, Leo, and spent much of her time tending to her flower gardens. Alice was able to remain in the home she loved until she passed with the care she received from her family and Claire Wadden. Alice is survived by one daughter, Theresa (Jim) Hiltz, Bateston; and one son, Francis (Valerie), Sydney. Nanny will be greatly missed by her grandchildren, Paul (Jodie) Hiltz, Catalone, Jason (Megan) Hiltz, Kingston, Ont., Karen Mullins, Halifax, and Krista (Mike) Almond, Halifax. She is survived by great grandchildren, James, Josh, Jerritt, Brooke, Ellen and Kurtis Hiltz. Alice is also survived by two sisters, Bridget McCann, St. Hubert, Que., Margaret McGrath, Sydney; one brother, John Burke, Little Lorraine; and her aunt, Martha Cochrane, Louisbourg. Alice was predeceased by her husband, Leo in 2006, infant son, Leo Patrick, sister, Catherine and brothers, Leonard and William. Visitations for the late Alice Mullins will take place at the Immaculate Conception Church in Main-a-Dieu, Tuesday, Aug. 19 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass will be held at the Church, Wednesday, Aug. 20 at 11 a.m. with Fr. Everett MacDow officiating. Interment in the parish cemetery. Donations in Alice's memory may be made to the Immaculate Conception Cemetery Fund or charity of choice. Online condolences may be made to twcurryparkviewchapel@ns.sympatico.ca. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Arline MacVicar 73, Glace Bay - Arline Carol MacVicar, 73, of Glace Bay, passed away peacefully Sunday, Aug. 17, 2008, in the presence of her family at the Glace Bay Health Care Complex. Born in Glace Bay, she was the daughter of Gordon and Sarah (Morrison) Ferguson. She was a member of St. Paul's Presbyterian Church. Arline was a Cum Laude graduate of Mount Allison University Class of 1957, and a graduate of Provincial Normal College Class of 1953. She taught at Morrison Glace Bay High School for several years before starting her family. Aside from her interests in history, language and literature, she was very active in the affairs of St. Paul's Presbyterian Church until her illness. Arline is survived by her husband of 51 years, Charles MacVicar; sons, Ian (Nancy), Hammonds Plains, Neil (Mary), Albert Bridge, Allan (Mary), Bedford; daughter, Morah (Brian) McKinlay, Glace Bay; grandchildren, Sarah, Lindsay, Katie, Allan, Laura; step-grandchildren, Chris, Daniel and Ryan. Also surviving are sister, Norma (George) Beresford, Glace Bay; brother, Stewart (Anne) Ferguson, Mineville; sister-in-law, Martha, Toronto; brother-in-law, Donald (Ann) Bedford; sister-in-law, Isabel MacVicar, Black Point; and many nieces and nephews. There will be no visitation. A memorial service will be held in her honour Wednesday, Aug. 20 at 2 p.m. at St. Paul's Presbyterian Church, Rev. Lloyd Murdock officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations to St. Paul's Building Fund or charity of one's choice would be greatly appreciated. Arrangements are entrusted to Patten Funeral Home, 71 Union St., Glace Bay. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ James Joseph Gaudet - Peacefully at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital on Thursday, Aug. 7, 2008, of Mr. Jim Gaudet of Charlottetown, P.E.I., aged 81 years. Jim leaves to mourn his wife, Mary (nee Walker) Gaudet; and his children, Marlene MacLellan and her sons Ian and Steven; Lynn Gaudet; Ron and his wife Kathy and their children Heather, Amanda and Alex; Dayna Gaudet and her husband Dennis Gerard and their children Travis, Aaron and Jordan; Jan Gaudet and her husband Alex Bilik and their children Claire and Colin; and his son-in-law, Rick Limoges and his children Monique and Michael. Jim is also fondly remembered by his sisters, Irene Gallant and Rita Gaudet; sisters-in-law, Rita Gaudet and Anna Gaudet and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his daughter, Valerie Limoges, and his parents, Joseph and Julia (nee Gallant) Gaudet, sisters, Rose, Ada and Mary, brothers, George, Anthony, Frank, Louis, Edmond, brother-in-law, Joseph Gallant, and sister-in-law, Lorena Gaudet. The funeral was held Monday, Aug. 11, 2008, from St. Pius X Church, Charlottetown. Interment took place in the family plot at the Roman Catholic Cemetery. Completion of funeral arrangements was entrusted to the Hennessey Funeral Home. www.islandowned.ca ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Robert (Bob) Bruce Grant - After a much enjoyed life, the unexpected death of Robert 'Bob' Bruce Grant of Halifax, N.S., and formerly of Sussex Corner, N.B., occurred at his residence on Aug. 16, 2008. Throughout his life he enjoyed volunteering as a fireman, at the Lions Club and the Sackville legion. Bob was an avid baseball fan, cribbage and domino player as his friends past and present can attest. He was born at Canning, N.S. in 1926, the only child of the late Horace and Dorothy (Hiltz) Grant and was the husband of the late Lois (Craft) Grant who passed away in July of 2007. He is survived by his daughter, Kathy Covey and husband Larry; son, Doug Grant, both of Lower Sackville, N.S.; two grandsons, Matthew Grant and Jason Cannon. A memorial service will be held Thursday, Aug. 21 at Trinity Anglican Church, Sussex, N.B., at 11 a.m. with the Venerable David Barrett officiating. Born in Winnipeg, she spent her early life in Glace Bay. Kathleen was predeceased by her parents, Jim and Bertha Hayes. She is survived by a daughter, Laura; and brothers and sisters, Jim (Irene Bujara), Victor (Kathy Ullyott), Diana (Chris) Jensen, Chris (Marlene Kane), Sheilah Hayes, Cora (Doug) Strasky, and nieces and nephews, who will return to Cape Breton for a family funeral service on Aug. 26. Consistent with her wishes, Kathleen will be buried beside her mother and father at Black Brook Cemetery in Port Morien. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ James Peter Seaward 74, Sydney - It is with great sadness that we the family announce the passing of James Seaward which occurred Saturday, Aug. 16, 2008, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney. Born in Port aux Basques, he was the son of the late Martin and Elizabeth (Strickland) Seaward. James is survived by his sisters, Alice (George) Janes, Halifax, Delphine (John) Emmett, Alberta; brothers, Bill Seaward, St. John's, N.L., Ablsom (Joan) Seaward, Wimbly, Alta. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by brothers, Stephen and George in infancy. Cremation has taken place. There will be no visitation or funeral service. Interment will take place at a later date in Port aux Basques. Donations can be made to the Cape Breton Cancer Centre or Palliative Care Unit to honour the exceptional care they provided James during his illness.
