Cape Breton Deaths October 08, 2008 Wednesday Beatrice 'Betty' Balcom 85, Westmount - It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Beatrice Emily 'Betty' Balcom, 85 of Cloverdale Drive, Westmount, on Tuesday, Oct. 7, 2008, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, with her family by her bedside. Born in England, she was the daughter of the late Sydney and Rosina (Whale) Strover. Betty was a veteran of the Second World War, serving with the Royal Air Force. She was a former member of St. Aidan's Church, Westmount, a member of Vonnie MacEachern Singers, the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 126, Westmount and the Queen Elizabeth Chapter 14 of the Eastern Star and was very active in the girl guide movement. Surviving are her husband, Frank; daughters, Joan Gillis, Halifax and Ann (Dave) Benedict, Sydney Forks; sons, John, Westmount and Rick (Rena), Shelburne; grandchildren, Paul, John D. (Michelle), Kent (Robyn), Cheryl (Rod), Ryan and Brendan and great-grandchildren, Hayley, Archer, Royce, Hana and Austin and her special friend of 50 years, Noreen Glabay. Betty was predeceased by her sisters, Dorothy and Mabel; brothers, Ernest and John; granddaughter, Nancy Nicole and son-in-law, Danny Gillis. Visitation will take place at Sydney Memorial Chapel on Thursday, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A funeral service will be held at Church of Christ the King Friday at 11 a.m. with Rev. Fred Rhymes officiating. Born in Sydney, she was the daughter of the late Herbert and Janet (Rood) Ripley. Ethel was a member of First United Church, where she played piano and taught Explorers and Sunday school. She was an avid gardener and enjoyed knitting. Surviving are her daughter, Janet (Allan) MacAdam, Sydney; sisters, Hazel Andrews and Edie MacLeod; grandchildren, Lana and John Darran MacAdam; great-granddaughter, Nicole. Ethel was predeceased by her husband, John; sisters, Zeta Anderson, Edna Antonelli and Beatrice MacPherson; brothers, Laun and Lewis. A private family visitation will take place 11-12 p.m. on Thursday at Sydney Memorial Chapel. A funeral service will be held at First United Church on Thursday, 2 p.m. with Rev. Born in Bridgeport, he was a son of the late Hector and Katie (Cameron) MacNeil. Pius cherished time with his family and especially enjoyed his beloved grandchildren who brought so much joy to his life. Pius is survived by his wife, Mary; children, Jerome (Helen) MacNeil, Jennifer (Jamie) MacNeil and Donnie (Debbie) MacDonald; grandchildren, Kirsten, Brooklyn and Kyle; siblings, Jessie Mae, Alex, Johnny Hector, Cameron and Ed; and by many nieces, nephews and close friends. There will be no visitation at Pius's request. Funeral services under the direction of Curry's Funeral Home will be celebrated Thursday, 11 a.m. at Immaculate Conception Church with Rev. In lieu of flowers, donations are preferred to the Palliative Care Society or charity of choice. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Melissa Anne Paul 26, Eskasoni - Melissa 'Mel' Paul , 26, of 73 Logan Dr., Eskasoni passed away suddenly on October 5, 2008. Born in Sydney, she was the daughter of Sylvester Joseph Paul and Brenda Joy (Cooper) Paul of Eskasoni. She was a member of Holy Family parish, Eskasoni. Mel was a devoted daughter, a caring sister, loving mom and thoughtful auntie who will be missed by all her many friends and relatives. An avid reader, Mel was extremely interested in archeology especially Egyptology. Also, there was nothing she didn't know about sports. Mel is survived by daughter, Rylee Emerson Skye, at home; five brothers, Bradley (Mary), Todd, Matthew, David and Sylvester Jr., all of Eskasoni. Also surviving are Godchild, Bradley II, son of her best friend, Angie; maternal grandmother, Veda Cooper of Halifax and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins and a niece, Amira. She was predeceased by her grandparents and her maternal grandfather. Visitation for the late Melissa Paul will be held Saturday, Oct. 11, 2008 at the family home on 73 Logan Dr., Eskasoni. He passed away peacefully with all his family by his side, after a brief battle with cancer. Born in Sydney Mines, he was the son of John Paquet and the late Maude (Stephenson) Paquet. He was a member of St. Pius X parish, Sydney Mines. Wayne was a family man who always put his family first. He was a loyal employee of Irving Oil Ltd. for 22 years. He recently received his 22 year "Professional Drivers" pin for safe driving. He is survived by his loving wife, Lois (Standing) Paquet; daughter, Stacey; sons, Thomas, Chris White (Robyn), Dartmouth; a special son, Brandon (Babe) and grandchildren, Caleb and Tabitha White. Born in Cheticamp, he was the son of the late Anthonie and Rose (LeBlanc) Bourgeois. He was a veteran of the Second World War. He was a member of St. Peter's Church, Cheticamp. Marcellin worked at the mines in Sudbury, Ont. called Inco for about 28 years and then he came home to retire in Cheticamp. He enjoyed playing bingo and was know for peeling tickets. He is survived by one son, Brian (Cecile) Bourgeois, Enfield and one daughter, Rose Marie Bourgeois, St. Catharines, Ont. He was predeceased by his wife, Annie Cook and one son, Tony Bourgeois; four brothers, Angus Bourgeois, David Bourgeois, Charlie Bourgeois and Johnny Bourgeois. Visitation will be held today (Wednesday) from 7-9 p.m. Funeral will be celebrated Thursday at 10 a.m. in St. Peter's Church, Cheticamp with Fr. Peter LeBlanc officiating. A resident of Victoria Haven, May passed away peacefully on Monday, Oct. 6, 2008 at the Glace Bay Healthcare Complex. Born in Glace Bay, she was a daughter of the late Lawrence and Annie MacNeil. A former member of the Glace Bay Pensioners' Club, May was recognized as a wonderful dancer and also enjoyed cards, bingo, darts and other group activities. She is survived by her children, Maureen 'Rene', Kevin, James and Laurentia; sisters, Laurentia O'Brien and Eleanor Lord. She was predeceased by her husband, Daniel; children, Lorna, Dan, Patrick and John; brothers, John Joe and Danny; sisters, Rita, Julia, Josie, Evelyn and Agnes.
