Cape Breton Deaths October 31, 2008 Florence (Bates) Chiasson Sydney Florence's family, relatives and friends are warm-hearted for having her wholesome presence until this her 89th year, as she passed away on Wednesday, Oct. 29, 2008, at the MacGillivray Guest Home, Sydney. Born in Whitney Pier, she was the daughter of the late John Leo and Beatrice (Peters) Bates. While carrying a strong faith, Florence loved and lived life to the fullest, e.g. being very active in her parish's CWL (St. Theresa's, Sydney), maintaining a lifelong membership, serving as a eucharist minister and also being a member of St. Rita's Hospital auxiliary. Florence's interest in sewing and retail brought her to enjoyable, part-time employment with Eatons, Thompson and Sutherlands, and the Oak Hall Ltd. Her girls club, travel, many fiddle concerts, frequent visits with the sick or aged, also gave her much happiness. Florence is survived by children, Dennis (Valerie), Michael (Francy) and Madonna (Michael) Kennedy, all of Sydney, Terry (Carol), Sydney River, Mary Sawler, Westmount, Gerard, Calgary; by cherished grandchildren, Carter, Adam, Lindsay (Shannon McNeil), Noella, Kathleen, Kristi (Ryan Oxley), Brian (Jin Young), Bradley (Stacey Chatter), Heather (Jason Armstrong), Derrick (Annette) and Michelle (Bruce). Also very dear to Florence were Frankie (Jill), Jason (Jennifer) and April MacEachern. Her great-grandchildren are, Kia, Ryan, Evan, Lyle, Tori, Jordyn, Drew and Chase. Also surviving are her brothers, Ivan (Florence) Bates, Whitney Pier, Adrian (Florence) Bates, Sydney River; and many nieces and nephews, whom she loved. Florence was predeceased by her husband, Wilfred in 1993, sisters, Bernadette (Fred) Dye, Faustina (Joe) Harriet, Mary 'Mamie' (Jim) Hanrahan, Clara (Edgar) Burt, brothers, Art (Katie), Mike (Jean), Harold (Dot) and three siblings who died in infancy. Visitation will be at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel, Sunday, Nov. 2, 2008, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A funeral mass will be celebrated at St. Theresa's Church, Monday, Nov. 3 at 10 a.m. with Rev. Jim Oliver officiating. Interment in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks. Born in Sydney, he was a son of the late Neil and Cassie (Dawson) Shaw. He was employed for 25 years with Bethune Esso and the Department of Natural Resources. He was a member of Greenwood United Church, Baddeck. He was a veteran of the Second World War. Surviving are his wife of 62 years, the former Mary C. MacInnis; sons, Dan Neil (Kaye), Rhybyrn (Debby), Kenneth (Gwynn), Jamie (Charlene); daughter, Catherine; brother-in-law, Kenneth Morrison, Sydney; sister-in-law, Doreen Shaw, Ontario; nine grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by brother, Donnie, sister, Helen, three great-grandchildren in infancy and son-in-law, Angus Smith. Visitation 2-5 and 7-9 p.m., Saturday in MacAskill Funeral Home, Baddeck. Born in Sydney, she was a daughter of the late Wilfred and Emily (Morgan) Boudreau. She is survived by sons, Neil (Fran), Point Edward, Bill (Gwen), Delroy (Ann), Jersey Cove; daughter, Sylvia (Walter) Silver, Ontario; sisters, Rita, Yvonne (George), Sydney, Isabel, Rhode Island; five grandchildren, Sylvia, Mark, Sonya, Jason, Daniel; seven great-grandchildren, Alexis, Robyn, Ella, Callum, Teirnan, Douglas and Liam. She was predeceased by her husband, Horace E. MacInnes, brother, Bill. The body is resting in St. Ann's Bay United Church, Indian Brook, with visitation 2-5 p.m., Friday, Oct. 31, and where funeral will be 2 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 1, Rev. Shirley Murdock officiating.
