Cape Breton Deaths October 27, 2008 Monday Al Drohan 52, Whitney Pier - Allison Joseph 'Al' Drohan, 52, of Whitney Pier passed away Saturday, Oct. 25, 2008, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital. Born in Sydney, he was the son of Mary Bridget (O'Rourke) Drohan of Sydney and the late Charlie Drohan. Al was a graduate of Sydney Academy and St. FX University. He was a letter carrier with Canada Post for 28 years and especially enjoyed delivering the mail in his home community of Whitney Pier. During his time as a member of the Letter Carriers Union of Canada Local 37, Al served in various executive positions. He also served his community as an alderman for Ward 5 for the City of Sydney from 1988 to 1995. As alderman, he served on many boards and committees and was the last deputy mayor of Sydney prior to amalgamation. An avid sportsman who excelled in baseball and hockey in his younger years, he was a big fan of the Detroit Red Wings and the Montreal Expos. Al was a cherished husband, father, grandfather, son, brother, godfather and friend whose life centred around his family. He particularly enjoyed their numerous camping trips in the Cape Breton Highlands. Al's terrific sense of humour and wit will be sorely missed at future family gatherings. Surviving are his wife, the former Nancy MacVicar; daughters, Cristin (Dave) Hillier, Sydney, and Tara, Halifax; grandchildren, Rachael and Rebecca Hillier. Also surviving are siblings, Ray, Halifax, Chuck (Pat), Sydney, Jerry (Arlene), Halifax, Ann Marie (Sandy) McNabb, Patricia (Donnie) Miller, Donnie, Terry (Maddie), all of Sydney; mother-in-law, Marie MacVicar (Don), Sydney; brothers-in-law, Tommy, Wayne, Kenny and Lorne; sister-in-law, Diane and many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins. Al was predeceased by a brother-in-law, David. Visitation for the late Mr. Drohan will be held Tuesday, Oct. 28 at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel, George Street, Sydney, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass will be celebrated Wednesday, 3 p.m. at Holy Redeemer Church, Whitney Pier, Fr. Errol MacDonald officiating. Born in Whitney Pier, Anne was the daughter of the late Frank and Tillie (MacDonald) McNeil. She was a member of St. Theresa's CWL for more than 25 years. She was an active member of the Steelworkers and Sydney Pensioner's Club, enjoying bowling, darts, shuffleboard and especially the friendships of the club members. She will be remembered as a loving and compassionate wife and mother who always put others before herself. Anne is survived by her husband of 54 years, Ernest Chiasson; daughters, Claudette (John) MacDonald, Kentville, and Mary Eileen (Andrew) MacPherson, Lower Sackville; and sons, Charles (Rose) Chiasson, Lower Sackville, Keith (Kim) Chiasson, Sydney, and Karl (Shauna) Chiasson, Whitby, Ont. She is survived by seven grandchildren whom she greatly adored, Ashley, Andrea, Lachlan, Hilary, Adele, Natalie and Kieren. Anne is also survived by her brother, John (Alice) McNeil and Margaret Reese. She was predeceased by her siblings, Mary (Aldin) Chant, Rita McNeil and Francis Jr. (Terry) McNeil. Visitation for Anne will be held Monday, Oct. 27 from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel, Sydney. Born in Sydney, she was the daughter of Mrs. Margaret (McDonald) Morrison, Sydney, and the late Howard U. Morrison. Lorna was employed with Citizenship and Immigration as the Continuous Learning Co-ordinator. Lorna dedicated much of her time to Helping Hands of the Every Woman's Centre. Lorna's love for animals was well known, especially her horses, and she was an avid rider. Besides her mother, Margaret, she is survived by her partner, Jean MacQueen (daughter of Weston and Marjorie MacQueen), Dutch Brook; three sisters, Mary Morrison, Halifax, N.S., Amelia 'Millie' Morrison, Calgary, Alta., Lois (Muhammed) Morrison-Huq, Campbellville, Ont. She is also survived by her nieces, Stephanie, Kirsten, Jamila and Monita (Denny); nephew, Jaron; great-niece, Brooklyn; best friend, Nancy Antle. Cremation has taken place. Visitation will take place Tuesday, Oct. 28 at the S.W. Chant & Son Funeral Home, 564 Alexandra St., Sydney, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 29 at St. Andrew's United Church with Rev. Stephen Mills officiating. Mom was born in Florence, N.S., March 28, 1930, and moved to Welland in February 1948 to be with Dad as he was here searching for work. During her work career she blessed the halls of the old hospital, Brights canning factory and Stelco, but the position she loved most was pharmacy technician at Welland Medical Pharmacy where she remained until her retirement. Mom was a member of Newlife Fellowship in St Catharines and was very active in a program for single parents and their children and she enjoyed kitchen duty. A long-standing member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 4, she was a member of the ladies auxiliary and shared many stories of the fun and hard work that they are involved in. Mom loved the Toronto Blue Jays and the Toronto Maple Leafs, who she believes will win the Stanley Cup this year (what faith!). We invite you to join in the celebration of our mother's life to be held at the Welland Funeral Home, 827 East Main St., Welland, Monday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral service will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. in Chapel with family present from 10:30 a.m. Mom's friend and Pastor, Pastor Don Thibeault will be officiating. Born in North Sydney, he was the son of the late Thomas and Kathleen (Murray) Dolomont. Donald was a member of St. Pius X parish, Sydney Mines. He was very well known for his musical talents often called one of the best bass players in Cape Breton. Donnie played with the original 'Rockin' Saints' and the 'Black Kats' and also toured with Smiley Bates and played with numerous other bands. In his earlier years, Donnie worked as a stevedore for Marine Atlantic and later with O'Connor's Furniture repair. Donnie was known as a loving, caring person, whose family was his greatest joy. He was always willing to lend a helping hand to family and friends. Donnie loved old cars, watching old movies and spending time at his cottage in Long Island. Donnie was a friend to everyone. Donald is survived by his loving wife of 43 years, Eileen (Jobe) Dolomont; daughters, Martina Dolomont (Rick), Sydney River, Arthina (Joe) Campbell, North Sydney and Lisa (David) Bonnar, Barrachois; grandchildren, Jessica, Logan, Courtney, Aaron and 'Little Martina'; brothers, Jim (Carolyn), Sydney Mines, Thomas (Carol), Dartmouth, Robert (Monika), Dartmouth and Mike (Valeria), New Harris; sisters, Kitty (Ron Colpitts), Bedford, Jean Hatcher, Marjorie (John), Langford, both in Port Hawkesbury, Judy (George Day), North Sydney and numerous nieces and nephews and also son-in-law, Todd Barnes. Born in North Sydney, he was a son of the late James and Geraldine (Bulmer) Cox. Gerald was a veteran of the Second World War serving with the Canadian Army. He was predeceased by two sisters, Beatrice, Marjorie, and a brother, Freeman. There will be no visitation by request. Online condolences may be sent to info@wjdooley.com. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ John 'Beaver' Edwin MacDonald 1914-2008 Birch Grove - We regret to announce the passing of John Edwin MacDonald formerly of Birch Grove on Saturday, Oct. 25, 2008, at the Glace Bay Health Care Complex. Born in Birch Grove, he was the son of the late Daniel M. and Sarah Ann (Nicholson) MacDonald. John was a resident of Taigh Na Mara Nursing Home, Glace Bay. He was a member of the RCAF in 1941. He spent many years until his retirement, as a coal miner, where he earned his nickname, Beaver. He had compassion for animals, especially his German shepherds, he also enjoyed harness racing. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by a brother, Neil F. MacDonald. In honouring John's wishes, there will be no visitation or funeral service. Cremation has taken place under the care direction of V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, Glace Bay. Interment will be in Black Brook Cemetery. Born in Sydney, N.S., she was the daughter of the late Hector Matthew and Anna Catherine MacNeil, Iona. She was a member of St. Michael's parish, Baddeck. Sissy is survived by her loving husband and caregiver, Arnold MacNeil; brothers, Jimmy (Jerry), Washabuck, John Hector (Juanita), Hazeldale, and George, Iona; sisters, Sadie (Michael) MacKenzie, Big Beach, Caddie MacNeil, Iona, and Josie (Richard) Bonaparte, Iona; sisters-in-law, Isabel (Gordie) Mills, Dartmouth, Kaye Anne (Charlie) MacNeil, Benacadie, and Anna MacNeil, Sydney River. Born in New Waterford, he was the son of the late Irene (Murphy) and Buddy Wilson. Earl will be deeply missed by his two daughters, Sandra Wilson and Donna Downe; special son-in-law, Bobby Downe and much loved grandchildren, Danny, Tonya and Joey Dembicki. Also survived by one sister, Irene (Wilfred Crummey), New Waterford; and two brothers, Gerald 'Mutt', Dominion and Tommy (Marjorie), New Waterford. He was predeceased by his wife, Margaret (Grace), one sister, Thelma (Marshall Jessome) and by seven brothers, Richard, Bernard 'Tonne', Russell, Cecil, Clayton, Lloyd and Leslie (in infancy). There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place. A funeral mass will be celebrated Wednesday, Oct. 29 at 11 a.m. at the Parish of St. Leonard, St. Agnes site.
