Cape Breton Deaths October 10, 2008 Friday Dennis Francis Chisholm London, Ontario - Peacefully at the London Health Sciences Centre on Thursday, Oct. 9, 2008, Dennis Francis Chisholm of London in his 57th year. Beloved husband of Debbie Chisholm and dearly loved father of Dennis Gus and Shelby Chisholm, all of London. Loved brother-in-law of Sharon and Douglas Doward of London and dear uncle of Kyle Doward. Dear son-in-law of Faye Kolybaba of Toronto. Predeceased by his niece, Lisa Doward. Several cousins survive in Cape Breton and Nova Scotia. Dennis will be sadly missed by his many friends and especially his life-long friends Mae and Deak MacKinnon. A service celebrating the life of Dennis will be held at the McFarlane & Roberts Funeral Home, 2240 Wharncliffe Rd., S., Lambeth 519-652-2020 on Saturday, Oct. 11, 2008 at 11 a.m. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Online condolences and donations are available through www.mcfarlane-roberts.ca. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Neil Currie Oct. 11, 1938 - Oct. 8, 2008 - It is with great sadness that the family of Neil Currie, Cap Le Moine, formerly of Benson Drive, Sydney, announces his passing on Wednesday, Oct. 8, 2008 after a courageous battle with cancer. Born in Sydney, he was the son of the late Daniel J. and Mary (MacNeil) Currie. He was educated at Constantine and Sydney Academy. Neil was a lifetime employee of N.S. Power, having commenced employment with Eastern Light and Power September 1957 and retired from N.S. Power in September 1993. Neil was a former member of the Cape Breton and Bluenose Beagle Clubs. His great love of horses gave him much enjoyment as an owner and a faithful racing fan. Surviving are his wife of 44 years, Anne Marie (Luedee) and his daughters, Gail MacNeil (late Tom MacNeil-April 2008), Bermuda, Colleen LeBlanc (Pat), Sydney and Maureen Wojick (Walter), Moncton, N.B. He was a wonderful 'Grampie' to Tyler and Riley MacNeil, Christopher and Maria LeBlanc and Devin, Justin and Ryan Wojick. Also surviving are his brother, Michael Curry (Rachel) and Helen Pachok (Steve) both of Sydney and Tillie Gillis (Gerald) Albuquerque, New Mexico and sisters-in-law, Irene Luedee, Sydney and Paulette Luedee, Toronto; many nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by sisters, Theresa George, Frances Pimental; brothers, Donald and Peter in infancy. Cremation has taken place. Visitation will take place today (Friday) from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the S.W. Chant and Son Funeral Home, 564 Alexandra St., Sydney. Funeral mass will be held 12 p.m. Saturday, Oct., 11, 2008 in St. Anthony Daniel Church, with Fr. Anthony O'Connor officiating. Private family burial at a later date. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Fern Lavina Briand 57, Baddeck - It is with fond and pleasant memories that the family announces her passing on October 9, 2008, in Victoria County Memorial Hospital, Baddeck, after a lengthy and courageous battle with cancer. Born in Neil's Harbour, she was a daughter of the late Gordon and Evelyn (Best) Seymour. She worked as a cook at Telegraph House for 23 years and at the Gaelic College for two and a half years. She was a member of St. Peter-St. John Anglican Church, Baddeck. Fern was a loving mother, sister, grandmother and friend. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her. Surviving are her husband of 39 years, Clyde Briand; sons, Lawrence (Meghan), Travais (Nicole) and Barry (Carla); brothers, Herbert (Eleanor), Terry (Joyce), Lawrence (Jerri), Wade (Mary Ellen); sisters, Nadine (Wendell) Stockley, Dale (Stephen) Hussey, Roxanne (Steve) Coutts and Gay Seymour; grandchildren, Kayla, Catherine, Bryan and Sophia. Donations may be made to the Cancer Treatment Centre at Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney or to the family. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ William David McEwan 70, Sydney Mines - We, the family, regret to announce the passing of a beloved brother and uncle, Bill McEwan. He passed away peacefully on Oct. 8, 2008, at Northside Community Guest Home, in the company of his loving sister and caregiver Lorraine. Bill was born in Sydney Mines and was the loving son of the late William Brown McEwan and the late Eva Catherine McEwan (Clark). Bill is survived by his sister, Lorraine Aker (Cyril), Sydney Mines, and one brother, Brian McEwan (Joy), Halifax, N.S. He is also survived by several nieces, nephews and grandnieces and nephews. Bill, in his earlier years, was employed with Modern City Dairy and the Prince Mine. Bill was a member of the Clyde Avenue United Baptist Church. Bill was gentle, kind, compassionate and a very caring man who was always ready to lend a hand and reach out to those in there times of need. Bill thoroughly enjoyed the quiet pleasures of life while fishing and hunting and at times, in his earlier years, spent many hours with the hobby of taxidermy. After a life altering illness, Bill took up residence at the Northside Community Guest Home were he became part of a loving caring extended family of friends and staff. The acts of kindness and compassion towards Bill throughout his years with this extended family were the highlights of many of Bill's most recent years. His passion for painting can be seen in the many pictures adoring the halls of the Northside Community Guest Home. His talent is one he and his family were ever so proud of and will remain with all who view his work in the many years to come. Cremation has taken place. Arrangements are under the direction of Fillmore and Whitman Funeral Home, Clyde Avenue, Sydney Mines where a funeral service for Bill McEwan will be held in the chapel on Saturday, Oct. 11 at 2 p.m. with Rev. Knickle Halifax/Bras d'Or - Mary Magdelain Knickle (Howley) died peacefully at her residence, 5633 Drummond Court, Halifax, with her close family at her side, on Oct. 9, 2008. Born in Little Bras d'Or, N.S., she was the daughter of the late Ella Howley (Fraser) and Joseph Howley. She was predeceased by her husband, Robert and her only child, Bertrum, sisters, Annie (Devison) and Helen (Buchanan) and brothers, Gratten, Milton, Patrick and John. She is survived by her nieces, Anne MacNeil and her children, Laura and Alex; Carolyn Toomey (Jack) and their children, Beth, Shaemus and Keighan and nephews, Alex Buchanan (Tracey) and their children, Emily, Alyssa and Jessica and Art Buchanan and daughters, Julie Vannordin and Karen and his partner, Shirley Mercer, with whom he provided loving and devoted care to Aunt Mary in her home, these last seven months of her life. She is also survived by nieces, Patricia (Stewart) Fricker, Grace (Bernie) Peck, Dave (Dolores) Howley, Joe (Frances) Howley, Lillian Rudnikoff, Ellen Howley, Sally Campbell and Doug (Donna) Howley and families. A teacher by profession, Mary began her teaching career in Cape Breton, teaching in Bras d'Or West, Boularderie and Mill Creek. She continued her career with the Halifax school district, until her retirement in 1977. Mary was a kind and gentle soul, who enjoyed her family and friends and always welcomed them into her home. She was an avid reader, keeping abreast of local and world affairs and enjoying a daily walk until recent weeks. She was a devote Catholic and a member of the Blessed Mother Theresa of Calcutta parish, Halifax. By Mary's request, family visitation will take place Friday, from 7-9 p.m. in her family home in Bras d'Or. Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday morning at 10:30 a.m. in St. Joseph's Parish Church, Bras d'Or with Fr. Peter MacLeod presiding. Interment will follow in the parish cemetery.
