Cape Breton Deaths October 11, 2008 Saturday Patrick Purcell 77, Glace Bay - It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Patrick Leo Purcell, age 77, of Mechanic Street, Glace Bay. Pat passed away on Friday, Oct. 10, 2008, at the Glace Bay Health Care Complex, with his family members at his side. Born in Harbour Grace, Nfld., he was the son of the late Pierce and Zela. Pat was a former lumberjack and was employed with the fisheries. He will be sadly missed by his loving wife of 57 years, Vera (Burden); children, Pierce, Beatrice, Reg, Ann Denise; brothers, Leo (Hazel), Alphonse (Gwen), Richard (Marilyn); sisters, Phoebe (Thomas), Eileen (Leonard), all of Newfoundland; cherished grandchildren, Marie, Cecil, Patrick, Alicia, Nicole, Vanessa; great-grandchildren, Jamie, Tanisha, Sarah, Hannah, Nicholas; also many nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his son, Paul Purcell. Pat was a kind and gentle man who loved his family dearly and volunteered his time to the seniors. In honouring Pat's wishes, there will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place under the care and direction of V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. Born in North Sydney, she was a daughter of the late Eugenia (Jeannie) Bishop. Tanya is survived by the loves of her life, her brother D.J.; her sisters, Danielle and Keona; nephew, Dominic and also surviving is a brother, Devin; her stepfather, Danny Fitzgerald; her father, Jerry Ashford and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. Besides her mother, she was predeceased by her maternal grandparents, Hazel Bishop and Bill Morrison and paternal grandparents, Art and Margaret Ashford. A funeral mass will be held Wednesday, Oct. 15, 2008, at 10 a.m. from St. Joseph Church, North Sydney, with Rev. Jim Attwood officiating. Burial will follow in Holy Cross Cemetery. Born in Sydney, she was the daughter of the late Robert Fennell and Vivian (Critch) Fennell. She was a member of St. Alphonsus parish, South Bar. Surviving are her husband, Murray Rudderham; one daughter, Sharon Angela Vivian MacLean, Sydney and one son, Donald Robert MacLean, P.E.I.; three sisters, Donna Jeannette Fennell, Nancy Germaine Fennell, both of Sydney and Betty Ann (Jim), Vancouver B.C.; two brothers, Robert Fennell, South Bar and William Fennell, Sydney. Sharon is also survived by eight grandchildren. There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 12, 2008 in the S.W. Born in Sydney, he was the son of the late Doug and Ellen (Turner) MacCormack, Grand Lake Road. Steven graduated from Riverview High school in 1982 and from the Nova Scotia Community College in Truro with a diploma in Ecotourism. Steven loved life; he enjoyed traveling, sports, fishing and was a real people person. He lived in Toronto for a number of years working in the Skydome. He loved to play basketball and assisted in coaching at Saint Mary's University. Surviving are his wife Shirley (Boutilier) MacCormack, Albert Bridge; siblings, Jerry (Glenda), Kathryn (Philip Cogswell), both of Albert Bridge, Ralph, Winnipeg, Ellen (Kevin Batherson), Ottawa, John (Dorothy MacLeod), Chestergrant, N.S., Lorraine MacCormack (Kevin Mason), Windsor, N.S., James (Joan Mahoney), Halifax, Janet (Bob Keoughan), Red Deer, Alberta. He is also survived by aunts and uncles, Edna (Tim) Nearing and Janet (George) House, both of Glace Bay; many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Steven was predeceased by his parents, Doug and Ellen (Turner) MacCormack. Cremation has taken place. Visitation will take place Monday, Oct. 13, 2008 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the S.W. Born in Woodbine, Cape Breton on Dec, 5, 1930, she was the daughter of the late Angus Walter and Catherine MacLean. She is survived by her husband, Dennis; two daughters, Shelly (Bruce) Hunter, Kitchener, Ont., Shannon (Jim) Oshefslci, Red Deer, Atla.; stepdaughter, Sandra (Ron) Hughes, Prescott, Ont.; sister, Rita Anstey, Dartmouth; sister-in-law, Theresa MacLean, Howie Centre; many nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by brothers, Stephen, Alex, Francis and Angus and three brothers in infancy, sisters, Margaret Hickey and Theresa O'Grady. Frank Abbass officiating. Interment of ashes in the parish cemetery. Reception for friends and family to follow in the church hall. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Phillip MacLean 84, New Aberdeen Glace Bay - It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Phillip MacLean, 84, Seventh Street, New Aberdeen, Glace Bay, on Wednesday, Oct. 8, 2008, at the Glace Bay Healthcare Complex.Born in Reserve Mines, he was the son of the late Ronald and Flora (McMullin) MacLean. In his early years, Phillip was involved with the Reserve Mines Athletic Club. Phillip enjoyed hunting, fishing and spending time with his family listening and making music. Another passion of Phillip's was Metro B hockey. Phillip worked many jobs throughout his life. He started working at the age of 11 with the Department of Highways, he was a chief constable for the County of Cape Breton. He worked in the coal mines (No. 14, No. 18 and No. 25 collieries), he opened a taxi service with his partner Johnny Peck, he worked for Campbell's & Associates Surveyor, he worked at Sydney Airport and then Phillip retired from Eastern Transport. Phillip will be sadly missed by his partner in life, Mary Hamood; his daughter, Debbie Smith; grandchildren, Margie and JB (Tracey); great grandchildren, Michael Phillip and Lauren Margaret. Phillip is also survived by his brother, Alfred (Isabel), Reserve Mines; sisters, Florann (Joe Gimlet), Reserve Mines, Margie McNeil, Dominion, Dolena (Robert) Pitman, Barrie, Ont. and Wilma (Herb Gregory), Dominion; sister-in-law, Dorothy MacLean, Reserve Mines. He will be sadly missed by countless nieces, nephews and close friends. Phillip was the eldest in his family. Besides his parents, Phillip was predeceased by brothers, Alley, Peter, Mickie, Jimmy, John, Cecil, Joseph in infancy and by one sister, Mary Ellen. The family would like to give a special thank you to the VON for their wonderful assistance. Born in Gabarus Lake, she was the daughter of the late Norman and Mary (Ferguson) MacKay. Fema was a member of the Grand River Presbyterian Church, the church choir and the Pictou County Antique Car Club. She enjoyed travelling, attending concerts, bluegrass festivals and sitting down to a cup of tea or coffee with family and friends. Some people travelled long distances to enjoy her oatcakes. She enjoyed spending time with her family and friends and especially enjoyed the entertainment of music and song of her two grandsons. Surviving are her husband, A.D.; son, Terry (Marlene), Cleveland; sister, Annabel MacLeod, Fourchu; grandchildren, Nevin and Brent. She was predeceased by her stepmother, Grace MacKay. Visitation will take place at Grand River Presbyterian Church, Saturday and Sunday, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A funeral service will be held in the church Monday at 3 p.m. with Rev. Born in North Sydney, he was the son of the late Fred and Frances (Logan) Jackson of Seaview Drive, North Sydney. Keith was manager and owner of Whitman’s Men’s Wear, North Sydney for 50 years. He was a member of the North Sydney Garden Club and was an avid skater and walker for many years. Keith cherished his time with his family, especially his children and grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who brought such joy to his life. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church, North Sydney. His faith in the Lord gave him great strength throughout his life. He will be greatly missed by his wife of 61 years, Mildred (MacKenzie) Jackson; his daughter, Marion (Sandy) Robinson, North Sydney; and his son, Fred (Sue) Jackson, Tupelo, Miss.; four grandchildren Dave, Steve, Valerie and Megan; three great-grandchildren, Chauntel, Danae and Kadyn; a brother, Doug Jackson, Vancouver; and a sister, Irene Elson, Ottawa; also his sister-in-law, Ethel (Elliott) Anderson, North Sydney; brothers-in-law, George (Mary) MacKenzie, North Sydney, Dr. Gordon (Mae) MacKenzie, Boularderie, and Rev. Born in Neil's Harbour, she was a daughter of the late Gordon and Evelyn (Best) Seymour. She worked as a cook at Telegraph House for 23 years and at the Gaelic College for two and a half years. She was a member of St. Peter-St. John Anglican Church, Baddeck. Fern was a loving mother, sister, grandmother and friend. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her. Surviving are her husband of 39 years, Clyde Briand; sons, Lawrence (Meghan), Travais (Nicole) and Barry (Carla); brothers, Herbert (Eleanor), Terry (Joyce), Lawrence (Jerri), Wade (Mary Ellen); sisters, Nadine (Wendell) Stockley, Dale (Stephen) Hussey, Roxanne (Steve) Coutts and Gay Seymour; grandchildren, Kayla, Catherine, Brydon and Sophia.
