Cape Breton Deaths October 06, 2008 Monday Howard Albert Sexton 1920-2008 - 'The Chief', as he was affectionately known passed away Saturday, Oct. 4, 2008. Born in Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., he was the son of the late Henry and Maisie (Davis) Sexton. It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of the Sexton Family Patriarch, our loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother and friend to all. A kind and gentle man, he touched the lives of everyone he met with his generosity, wit and sincere interest in people. His greatest love was his family and with them he shared his passion for music, storytelling, cards, laughter and life itself. As a young entrepreneur he owned and operated several businesses on the Northside. In July 1941 he joined the RCMP and was an original member of the Black Market Squad. During the war he joined the RCNVR as a member of the Military Police Shore Patrol. In 1950 he became the youngest chief of police in Canada, a position he held in Sydney Mines for 28 years. He was vice-president of the Maritime Police Association, truant officer, mentor and counsellor. He gave potential criminals a second chance. His other jobs included building inspector, house appraiser, carpenter, prescription delivery and jack of all trades. He was a fisherman, golfer and competitive athlete. His volunteer efforts included Meals on Wheels, Kiwanis Ceilidh Golden K, Royal Canadian Legion and many other causes. He is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Margaret (MacIntosh) Sexton; son, Barry (Marsha), Antigonish; daughters, Judith (Angus) Gardner, Sydney, and Jeanne (Murdock) MacNeil, North Sydney; grandchildren, Jennifer (Fabian) Joseph, Christopher and Jonathan Gardner, Meghan (Chris) Dover, Katie, Sarah and Molly Sexton, Kyle (Liz) Sexton, Shannon and Judith Donovan and Jenna and Matthew MacNeil; his great-grandchildren, Geordie, Michael and Katherine Joseph, Jaime, Alexis and Ava Sexton; his brothers, Orville (Martha) and Glenn (Brenda); sister, Eleanor Marks; sisters-in-law, Mary Murphy, Theresa MacDermid and Betty McIntosh and many beloved nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, Henry and Maisie (Davis) Sexton, sister, Barbara (Mark) Carey, sister-in-law, Eva (Cecil) Snow, brothers-in-law, Dougie McIntosh, Gerald Murphy, Donald MacDermid and George Marks and his son-in-law, Joe Donovan. Visitation 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Wednesday in Francis Funeral Home, Sydney Mines. The funeral service will take place 11 a.m. Thursday in Carman United Church, Clyde Avenue, Sydney Mines, with Rev. Born in Sydney, he was the son of the late Raymond and Winnifred (Kingsbury) Dawe. He was the parts manager of Plaza Ford, a member of First United Church, Cape Breton Screaming Eagles Booster Club. He was an avid gardener and former dart player at the Cedars Club, Sydney. William is survived by his daughter, Sharon (Roddie) Reid, Front Lake; sons, William (Karen), Scott, Stephen (Jill); sisters, Shirley (Ed) Connelly, Jean (Louis) Vatcher; and a brother, Raymond (Valerie). He is also survived by 10 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. He was predeceased by his wife, Bessie (Stevenson) and sister, Irene. Born in Margaree, she was the daughter of the late John and Jean Burns. She was a laborer at the Cape Breton Post and a member of Sacred Heart Church. Margaret is survived by her husband, Louis William Hewer; daughters, Wanda (Bradley) MacNevin, Sydney, Crystal and Son, Richard, at home; two grandchildren, Raven and Margaret; two great-grandchildren, Victoria and Brandy. She is also survived by five special friends, Darlene Williams, Donna Murphy, Ann Marsh, Jean Camus and Anna Hewer and family. Smith 55, Sydney River - It is with heavy hearts we announce the sudden passing of Teresa Smith, Sydney River, Oct. 4, 2008. Born in Grand Mira South, she was the youngest daughter of the late Harry and Annie (MacIntyre) Thomas. Teresa was a member of Our Lady of Fatima parish. She was a kind and caring person where passing has left a void in the lives of all who knew and loved her. Teresa will be greatly missed by her husband, George Keats; their four children, Karen (Terry) Lawrence, Howie Centre, Terrance (Tracy) Smith, Calgary, Janice (Owen Cunningham), Howie Centre and Mary (Chris Marks), Sydney River. Her greatest joy in life was her six grandchildren, Brittany, Samantha, Nicholas, Dylan, Katie and Jacqueline. Born in Glace Bay, he was the son of Mrs. Hazel MacDonald, Glace Bay and the late Angus MacDonald. Warren was a member of Gordon United Church, Glace Bay. He was educated at MacKay's Corner School, Morrison High, and Teachers College in Truro. He was employed with the Canada Manpower Centre until his retirement. He enjoyed spending time with family in Mira and in Prince Edward Island. He also enjoyed being in his workshop. Besides his mother, Hazel, Warren is survived by his loving wife of 44 years, Irene (Stevenson); his three children, Eunice MacDonald, Maxine MacDonald (Joe) and Keith (Donelda) MacDonald, all of Sydney; two sisters, Isabel Morrison, Elinor 'Leah' (Reg) Skanes, both of Glace Bay; two brothers, Clifford (Carol) MacDonald, Ontario, Glen (MaryJo) MacDonald, N.B.; three precious grandchildren, Travis, Rachelle and Teela; as well as close family friends, Jim 'Marty' and Cathy O'Rourke; many nieces and nephews and his furry friends, Chevy, Sissy and Shadow. MacEachern 75, North Sydney - It is with peaceful sadness that we the family announce the passing of our darling M.J. MacEachern of Boularderie at the Northside General Hospital, on Oct. 5, 2008, in his 75th year. He was a kind and gentle soul, a devoted husband and proud and loving father and grandfather and was dearly loved by his family, and all who knew him. He touched the hearts of all who knew him. Born in Goose Cove, Victoria County, he was the son of the late Annabelle (MacEachern) Urquhart. Surviving is his loving wife of 46 years Mabel (Clarke), who was his constant source of love, hope, strength and support throughout his lengthy illness; sons, Stephen (Carolyn), Halifax, and David (Peggi) and granddaughters, Abbie and Olivia, and three step-grandchildren, Kris, Darcy and Jillian Musgrave, Ottawa; brother, Charlie (Mary) and their children, Leah and Adrien. Special inlaws, Peg and Jim Squires and their children, Sheldon (Loretta), Trevor (Tina), Valeria (Mike) Dolmont. M.J will fondly be remembered by our neighbours and guardian angels, Dr. A. Gordon and Mae MacKenzie. Besides his mother M.J. was predeceased by his stepfather, John Tom Urquhart, and the people he lived with all his young life, Murdock and Mary Smith and their son, Colin. M.J. worked for Speedy Propane in Sydney for 23 years, was a member and elder of St. James Presbyterian Church, Big Bras d'Or. He loved hunting and travelling with family and friends and was a member of the C.B. Ceilidh Campers. By his request the body was cremated. It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our father and husband. Harold passed away at home surrounded by his family. Born Oct. 28, 1923, in Florence, C.B., he was the son of the late Andrew F. and Catherine (Brady) Le Blanc. He is survived by his loving wife, Anne (MacKenzie); two sons, Harold and Andrew, all of Halifax. He is also survived by two sisters, Constance Russell (Shaun), Toronto, and Yvonne Lambert, Halifax; and brother, Russell, Sydney Mines. He was predeceased by an infant daughter and son, who died at birth, his parents, Andrew and Catherine, sister, Marguerite Pearl, Montreal, and brother, Ernest 'Frank', Florence. He grew up in Florence where he attended Grade school. Later he attended St. Joseph's Convent High School, Mabou, Inverness County, where he met his future wife - Anne. After graduating from high school, he briefly attended St. Francis Xavier University, Antigonish. After completing his first year at St. F. Xavier, he returned to Florence and entered the family business. For over 35 years he operated a general store in Florence, until he retired in 1984 and moved to Halifax, to be closer to his two sons. The two loves of Harold's life were his family and his faith. A devote Roman Catholic, he was a lifelong member of St. Stephen's parish, Florence, and member of Canadian Martyrs parish, Halifax, for over 20 years. A daily communicant for the last 25 years, he was one of the 'regulars' at the St. Mary's Basilica noon mass. He met the needs of the poor his entire life, while in business and for almost 20 years, as a member of St. Mary's Conference of St. Vincent de Paul. A humble man, he loved people and had a wide circle of friends in Cape Breton and Halifax. A Christian Mass of Burial will be held at Canadian Martyrs Church at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 7, Fr. James Mallon officiating. No visitation by request of the family. He will be buried with his family at St. Joseph's Cemetery, Little Bras d'Or, at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that a Mass be said for the Souls in Purgatory. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Elsie May (Snow) Joudrie Feb. 9, 1916-Oct. 3, 2008 - Elsie Joudrie passed away peacefully on Oct. 3, 2008, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney. Born in Sydney, she was the eldest daughter of the late James and Mary A. (O'Neil) Snow. A lifelong resident of Sydney she worked at Eastern Bakery Ltd. during her early years. She was a lifetime member of the Ladies Auxiliary, Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 12, and was recognized many times for her contributions and service. Elsie was a faithful member of Cape Breton Veterans Comfort Fund visiting veterans in the area. As a community volunteer she received service awards from the Canadian Red Cross and the Canadian Special Olympics. Elsie was a member of Bethel Presbyterian Church. She enjoyed many friendships over the years through bowling, playing darts, legion functions, and travelling, especially with Club 55 and the Rhythm Band. Elsie is survived by sister, Ruby (Gerald) Skinner; brother, John (Mary) Snow; brother-in-law, Thompson Howie; nieces; nephews and friends, all of whom will miss her laughter, kindness and sense of humour. She was predeceased by her loving husband, Charles (1968), sisters, Mary Ellis, Jean Howie, Tillie MacLellan, brothers, Ted, Ned, Jimmy and Fred Snow. Born in Sydney, C.B., she was the daughter of the Late Nelson and Muriel (Boomer) Kennedy. Georgie worked for the N.S. Provincial Government in the departments of Health and Lands and Forests. She was also a sergeant in the Reserve Army, Victoria Park, Sydney. She travelled throughout Canada and the U.S. and spent many winters in Florida where she enjoyed swimming and playing bridge. She is survived by her daughter, Dianne (Mike) Watts, Houston, Tex.; sons, Charles (Doris) Weatherby, Dartmouth, N.S., Nelson Weatherby, Ottawa, Ont.; niece, Karen (Robert) Angel, Amherst, N.S.; and nephew, Keith MacDonald, Sydney, N.S.
