Cape Breton Deaths November 15, 2008 Saturday Doreen Mary (Brushett) MacDonald 78, New Victoria - Doreen Mary MacDonald, 78, of New Waterford Highway, New Victoria, passed away Thursday, Nov. 13, 2008 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, surrounded by her loving family after a courageous battle with cancer. Born in New Waterford, she was a daughter of the late Thomas and Dolena (Cormier) Brushett. She was a member of All Saints Anglican Church, New Waterford. Doreen was an avid bingo player. She loved and was passionate about her garden and gardening. The strong love she had for her children and family was her biggest passion. Doreen volunteered for several years with the Canadian Cancer Society to help raise money and awareness. Surviving are her husband, Fred; daughter Lenora (John) Ziegler, Boca Raton, Florida; sons, Fred Jr. (Annie Mae), Ellsworth Ave., Ricky (Sandra), River Ryan; sisters Lenora (Raymond) MacIsaac, Ellsworth Ave., Winnie MacPherson, New Waterford; sister-in-law Betty, Windsor, Ont.; three grandchildren Kimberly, Johnny and Richard; many nieces and nephews. Doreen was predeceased by two brothers, Ernie and Reggie, sister-in-law Cathy and brother-in-law Donald 'Red' MacPherson. Visitation will be held Sunday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith Street, New Waterford. A funeral service will take place 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 17, at All Saints Anglican Church with Rev. Vernon Reid officiating. Cremation will follow with burial in Union Grove Cemetery at a later date. A luncheon will take place immediately after the funeral service at All Saints Anglican Hall. Donations in her memory may be made to Hospice/Palliative Care Society of Cape Breton or All Saints Anglican Church. He will be greatly missed by family and friends. Born in Smith Falls, Ontario, he was the son of Effie Kelly (Kendel) and the late Garfield Kelly. Before retiring he was employed by Oasis Oil Company in Libya. He then moved to New Waterford and actively co-managed Midway Taxi. Austin is survived by his mother, Effie, of Ontario; his wife, Donna (Warburton) Kelly, of New Waterford; daughters, Judy Wuytenburg (Rob), Michelle Moggach (Todd Kennedy), Colleen Martin and Heather Dignard (Steve), all of Ontario, Kim Kelly, at home; sons, Steven Kelly and Todd Warburton (Lori), both of Ontario; 18 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren; brothers and sisters-in-law; nieces and nephews. Austin is also survived by his "special" grandson, Mackenzie Kelly. Austin was predeceased by his father, Garfield Kelly, his two brothers, Olan and Norman Kelly, and granddaughter, Victoria Wuytenburg, in infancy. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service for family and friends will be held Tuesday, November 18, 2008, at 7:00 pm, at McLellan Brothers Funeral Home Chapel, New Waterford, N.S. Born in Truro, she was the daughter of Lawrence Paul Sr. and the late Ethel Cope. She was a member of St. Anthony Daniel and St. Anne's parishes. Each year she made the pilgrimage to St. Anne de Beaupre in Quebec. She loved all kinds of music especially country music. She was known for her great sense of humour and always had a joke ready. She is survived by husband, Joseph; daughter, Sharon (Derek) Johnson; son, Justin (Jeannine) Denny; sisters, Lauria Ann Paul, Anna I. Paul, Mary Eileen Paul, Ethel Nevin Landolt, Jeanette Nevin Marr Paul; brothers, Adrian Paul, Lawrence G. Paul and will be sadly missed by her grandchildren, Derek "DJ" Johnson, Chase Johnson, Daymon Johnson, Sage Johnson, Teanna Justine Denny, Kobe Bryant Peck, Yvette Sylliboy, Dionne Denny and Justyne Denny. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews and godchildren. Karen was predeceased by her daughter Wendy Ann Denny. Visitation for the late Karen Paul Denny will take place at the Gabriel Center, Eskasoni on Sunday, Nov. 16, 2008 starting at 7 p.m. Funeral mass will be celebrated on Tuesday, Nov. 18 in Holy Family Church, Eskasoni at 10:30 am. with Fr. Martin MacDougall officiating. Burial in the parish cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of T.W. Marks 69, Sydney - It is with heavy hearts that we, the family, announce the passing of our dear father and grandfather, Doug Marks on Friday, November 14, 2008 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney surrounded by his loving family after a brief illness. Born in Sydney, he was the son of the late Don and Blanche (Powell) Marks. Dad is still remembered for his hockey talent with the Sydney Suburban Hockey League in the 1950's. He worked for 45 years as a milkman, starting with Cape Breton Dairy and retiring from Scotsburn Dairy in 2002. He was also past president of the United Steelworkers of America Local 198 Retail Workers. He was best known as the bingo caller for the Sydney Junior Mills and various organizations at the Leisure Gardens, Steel Workers Hall, and most recently the Membertou Entertainment Centre. He coached various hockey and baseball teams, as he loved the company of all children. Dad was a rare breed of man, anyone who knew him, knew him to be a complete gentleman, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, son, brother, neighbor and friend. Dad was a devoted husband to Renee (Morrison) the love of his life, who passed away February 2004. Surviving are his children, Kelly (Gerald) Power, Dougie (Lisa) and Shane (Kim), all of Sydney, the lights of his life; his grandchildren, Ryan and Brennen Power, Morgan, Hannah, Ava and Emma Marks,who were his source of strength these last few years. He is also survived by his sister, Mary Lou (Jack) Cox; brothers, Bobby (Joyce), Wally (Cookie), Billy (Joan) and Donald (Stella); sister-in-law, Shirley Morrison; brothers-in-law, Jim (Sis) Morrison, Wayne (Kay) Morrison, as well as several nieces and nephews, and a foster child from World Vision, Baha' Issa. Born on October 30, 1932 in Sydney Mines, N.S., he was the son of the late Sydney and Myrtle (Ross) Ferneyhough. Fred moved to Ontario from Glace Bay to seek employment in 1956. In April, 1957, he had an industrial accident at his place of employment where he lost his right arm. He met his wife in Ontario in 1971 and they were married in September, 1972. He remained at his work until he retired in 1995 and then moved back to Fredericton. Fred was a member of The Salvation Army Community Church. He was a bandsman at the church, a member of the Men's Fellowship Group and a member of the J.O.Y. Srs. Fellowship. Fred was an avid sportsman. He loved skating, hockey and baseball. Fred took every opportunity to enjoy these things. In addition to his wife, Joyce, Fred is survived by his stepmother, Elizabeth Ashe of Glace Bay, N.S.; two brothers, Ross Ferneyhough of Woodstock, Ont., Cecil (Sally) Ferneyhough of Brockville, Ont. and one sister, Corrine (John) Shea of London, Ont.; two half brothers, Wayne (Judy) Ferneyhough of Dartmouth, N.S. and William 'Bill' Ferneyhough of Glace Bay, N.S.; two half-sisters, Doreen (Frank) Lanigan of Dartmouth, N.S. and Elaine (Jack) MacQueen of Glace Bay, N.S.; several cousins, nephews and nieces. Fred was also predeceased by his mother-in-law, Evelyn (Duncan) White. Visitation will take place at York Funeral Home, 302 Brookside Dr., on Sunday, Nov. 16, 2008 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A funeral service will take place at The Salvation Army Community Church on Monday, Nov. 17, 2008 at 2 p.m. with Captain Bradley Reid officiating and Rev. Pete Thomas assisting. A reception will follow at the church. Interment will take place in Forest Hill Cemetery at a later date. Personal Condolences may be offered through www.yorkfh.com ------------------------------------------------------------------------ James (Jimmie) MacNeil 80, St. Catharines Ontario/New Waterford Jimmie MacNeil passed away on Friday, Nov. 7, 2008 in St. Catharines. Born in New Waterford, he was the son of the late Hector and Katie (MacNeil) MacNeil. Jimmie served with the merchant marines during the second World War. After the war, he sailed on the Dominion coal boats and lake boats. He settled in St. Catharines and worked for the city until his retirement in 1993. Jim made yearly trips home to Cape Breton where he enjoyed visiting with family and friends. He is survived by his wife Loretta (Kelly) MacNeil, two sons, Craig and Clayton, daughter Kelly, and one grandson, Colton. He is also survived by one brother, Roy, New Waterford, four sisters, Peggy Rutledge, Anna Lever, New Waterford, Madeline McCarthy, Sydney, and Gina Creighton, Avon, MA. Besides his parents he was predeceased by two brothers, Johnnie and Matthew. Funeral took place Nov. 10, 2008 at St. Mary's Church in St. Catharines. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Kenneth (Ken) MacIsaac Dec. 14, 1945 - Nov. 13, 2008 -It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Ken in Winnipeg, Manitoba, after a lengthy illness. He will be sadly missed by his brothers, Stan (Verna) Ingleside, Ont. and Frank (Vina), Big Pond N.S. Hewill be fondly remembered by Christie Macinnis of Big Pond N.S. He was predeceased by his brother, Alex and his parents, Alex and Helen.
