Cape Breton Deaths November 12, 2008 Wednesday Daniel Joseph MacDonald - It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our dear husband, father and grandfather, Daniel Joseph MacDonald, age 85, at Harbourstone Enhanced Care on Nov. 10, 2008. Born in Gabarus, Daniel was the son of the late Joe Angus and Agnes (Currie) MacDonald. Danny enjoyed life to the fullest travelling to many places with his best friend Evelyn. He was employed at Sydney Steel for 45 years in the general office, earning the title of chief draftsman which he held until his retirement in 1985. Danny held various positions in the community. He was president of the office and technical union at Sydney Steel where he also held the title president of supervisors. Daniel was heavily involved in his parish Our Lady of Fatima. Where he was president of the men's club, looked after the altar servers, was a member of the choir and also a Eucharistic minister. In the community he was a member of the Coxheath Volunteer Fire Department where he was deputy chief. Danny loved his hockey and could usually be found at the county recreation centre during the winter. He was also very involved with Riverview High School. Danny was affectionately known as 'Mr. C' and he managed the Riverview Redmen for 21 years. In his younger days, Dan had a love for photography developing his own pictures and he later became the unofficial photographer for RHS. He will be dearly missed by his loving wife and best friend of 60 years, Evelyn (Diggins Almon); sons, Brian (Margaret Ann), Mark (Peggy); daughters, Danette (Kevin) MacRae and Lezlie (Terry) Pimentel; grandchildren, Bradley, Rosalyn, Stuart, Steven, Patrick, Thomas, Patricia, Jaime, Katherine and Cameron. Daniel will also be missed by sister, Marie (Douglas) MacDougall; brothers, Anslem (Bernice) and Vincent (Anne) and by many nieces and nephews. Daniel was predeceased by his parents; his sisters, Katherine, Anita, and his brother, Currie. Visitation for Mr. MacDonald will take place on Thursday, Nov. 13, 2008 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel, 755 George St., Sydney. A funeral mass to celebrate Danny's life will follow on Friday at 11 a.m. at Our Lady of Fatima Church in Sydney River and burial to follow at Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks. Born in Burgeo, Nfld., she was a daughter of the late John and Melida (Anderson) Kendall. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. The love and care she bestowed upon her family is her greatest legacy. Her interests included knitting, crocheting and quilting. Many of her handmade quilts can be found throughout the local area as well as other parts of Canada and the U.S.A. May is survived by her three sons, John (Marian), Falmouth, James (Eva), Sydney, Bernie (Willena), Scotchtown; and one daughter, Edith (Alan) Cummings, New Waterford. She was deeply loved by her 10 grandchildren, Debbie Masters, Eileen, Lisa, Jimmy Dalton, Kim and Sherri Dalton, Bernie and Darren Dalton, Robert and Allison Cummings. She is also survived by her seven great-grandchildren, David (D.J.), Cassidy, Rilee, Megan, Jessica, Hannah and James William. May is survived by one sister, Alma (Colie) Gillis, River Ryan, as well as several nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, James, sisters, Hilda Sellars, Ellen (Nellie) King, Grace Murphy, Mabel Anderson, Myrtle Harris and her brother, Rev. George Kendall. MacNeil Creignish - After squeezing every second out of every minute of the day, Archibald Alexander 'Archie A.' MacNeil passed away on Nov. 9, 2008, at the age of 83. He was a longtime resident of Creignish and loving husband of Martha (O'Connor) for 52 years. Archie A. embodies Cape Breton culture and tradition as a member of the Cape Breton Fiddlers' Association. Along with his good friend Frankie MacInnis, he regularly attended local dances, concerts and ceilidhs especially in West Mabou and the Judique Interpretive Centre, where he danced his last square set. Archie was an avid sports fan, playing baseball for the Inverness Ravens and the Co-ops as a young man and was a founding member of the Creignish Minor Baseball program. He had a passion for horse racing and proudly cheered on the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles and the New York Rangers, whose games he followed without fail. Born to Dan C. and Flora (MacIsaac) MacNeil on Aug. 17, 1925, in Inverness, Archie A. was fiercely proud of his close family, his children, Geraldine (Garry Lavallee), Sandy (Peggy MacKinnon), Curtis (Sharon Tessier), Glen (Anita Rankin), Warna (Henry Brenning) and Morley (Charlotte MacKenzie); 16 grandchildren; sister, Margaret 'Pecka' (John R. MacDonald); brothers, John A. 'Gicks' and James (Jane). He was predeceased by sisters, Hughanna 'Loupie', Kaye and Sadie, brothers, Dan C. and Mickey. He was honoured to be part of his community, its traditions and his neighbours who he loved so. Archie served with the Royal Canadian Navy Volunteer Reserves from 1943-1946. He saw action in the United Kingdom and the North Atlantic during the Second World War. He served on the HMCS Eastview in the North Atlantic and the HMCS Uganda in the Pacific. He was a member of the Port Hawkesbury Branch No. 043 Royal Canadian Legion and the Canadian Corp of Commissionaires. Smith 71, Halifax - David F. Smith, 71, Halifax, passed away Monday, Nov. 3, 2008, in the VG Site, Halifax. He was the second son of the late Frank and Ivena (Weir) Smith. He was predeceased by a brother, Paul in infancy. Raised on the family farm in Stanley, Hants County, David attended the local community school and then travelled by train to Windsor to complete high school. For a number of years he worked for the Royal Bank, employed in Windsor, Halifax, Baddeck and Sydney. Returning to Halifax, he was employed by the International Union of Operating Engineers, Bedford and Irving Construction, Halifax. In the mid-70s David owned and managed Hobby World, Mic Mac Mall, Dartmouth. Retiring in 1994, he was then free to indulge himself in his lifelong passion, remote control model airplanes. A member of the Halifax Radio Control Club as well as associate clubs through out the province, he spent countless hours at the Beaver Bank Flying Field, building planes at home, reading associated publications, researching on his computer, taking photos and checking the weather in the hope that it would be a great day to go out to the field. David built his last plane in the fall of 2007 which unfortunately he did not have the chance to fly. He was also a baseball and hockey fan having played both in his youth, a love of reading and music provided hours of relaxation. Those who knew him best will always remember his love of strawberry shortcake and apple pie. Surviving are his wife of 39 years, Theresa (Tess Cuthbertson) Smith; mother-in-law, Mary W. (Batherson) MacDonald, Halifax; sisters, Betty (Jim) Mumford, Stanley, Hants County, and their daughters, Natalie (Alex Stevenson) and son Gavin, Dartmouth; Jennifer (Clinton) MacPhee and daughter, Jillian, Upper Rawdon; Judith Dixon and her sons, Keith, Kenny, Benjamin and their families, Ontario; sister-in-law, Mary Lou (Barry) White and their sons, Jamie (Marzena) and their children, Emily, Nathan and Joshua, Ottawa; Christopher (Crystal), Dartmouth; many special cousins, friends and neighbours, especially Yvon and Kay (Brown) Au Coin. "He's Flying On His Own" ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Cynthia Frances (MacDougall) MacAdam Milford Station/Glace Bay - It is with great sadness that the family announces the passing of Cindy on Nov. 11, 2008, after a courageous battle with cancer. Cindy was a trooper to a lot of close friends fighting the same illness. She displayed great strength, support and humour to all those whom she came into contact with in her and their battle. Born in Glace Bay on June 1, 1958, Cindy was a loving mother to sons, Colin Francis and Donald Colton and a dear wife to her husband and best friend Colin of 34 years. Cindy is survived by her mother, Hectorine (MacDonald) MacDougall; sisters, Heather (Edward) Burton, Janice (Tom) Moriarty and brother, Robert (Cathy MacAdam) MacDougall. Cindy was predeceased by her father, Frank MacDougall. Cindy will be sadly missed by her many brothers and sisters-in-laws and nieces and nephews, many family friends, especially Maggie and Dave Manning and Patty and John van den Hof. Cindy graduated from St. Michael Senior High School and attended St. Frances Xavier University. She was initially employed with Seaboard Industrial in Glace Bay from 1979 to 1989. Colin and Cindy moved to Milford N.S., in 1989 where they settled to continue their family and employment. Cindy worked at Milford Elementary and Riverside Education Centre for 13 years as a noon-hour supervisor. She was very active in her community as a volunteer with several groups; The Milford Recreational Hall, Milford Elementary Home and School, Hot Lunch Program, dance chaperone, etc. Cindy was very active in the Boy Scouts of Canada for 11 years holding several positions, and received The Medal of Good Service Award. She was also a volunteer for The Kidney Foundation of Canada Cape Breton Chapter & Nova Scotia Branch for several years. Cindy was a member of the nationally famous MacDougall Girls Pipe Band in Cape Breton for several years back in the '70s. Cindy enjoyed many summer vacations in Cape Breton, 'Down North' in South Harbour and Christmas Island on the Bras d'Or Lakes where she spent many great times with her family, relatives and friends. For 15 years, prior to moving to the manor, she resided with her niece, Elizabeth and nephew, James. Born in Czech Republic, she was a daughter of the late Alois and Helena (Walsh) Starzyczny. Barbara was a member of the Parish of St. Leonard, Mount Carmel Church. She immigrated to Cape Breton from the Czech Republic in 1912 at the age of three. She ran her own grocery store on St. Joseph Street in New Waterford for over 40 years. Barbara was very active and independent and lived life to the fullest. She enjoyed gardening, fishing, camping, cooking, knitting, crocheting, and sewing. Barbara also loved to play the accordion. Surviving are step-daughter, Marian Melski; stepsons, John (Mildred) Poulain and Charlie Poulain, all of New Glasgow; several nieces and nephews. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Barbara was predeceased by her first husband, Freddy Duprey; second husband, George Poulain; four brothers, Charles Starzyczny, Theodore Starr, Leo and Ottokar, stepmother, Julia.
