Cape Breton Deaths November 03, 2008 Monday Leah Evelyn Ferguson 76, Sydney - With heavy hearts we announce the passing of our mother, Leah (Carson) Ferguson, formerly of Terrace Street, on Saturday, Nov. 1, 2008, at the Miner's Memorial Manor surrounded by her loving family. Leah was born in 1932, she was the tenth child of the late Joseph and Annie (MacDonald) Carson. She went to school in Sydney and graduated from Sydney Academy in 1950. She took a teaching job at Rocky Boston School for a year then she started working at the income tax until her marriage in 1960 to the late James 'Bart' Ferguson. She then had five children and was a stay at home Mom for over a decade, when she returned to work she worked the switchboard of Sydney City Hospital and then the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, until her retirement in 1997, where her quiet nature and smile made her many friends. In 2000 she was diagnosed with Alzheimers and stayed at home until March 2005 when she became a resident of Richmond Villa, St. Peter's and in August 2005 moved to Miner's Memorial Manor, Sydney Mines. The care she received from both of these homes was incredible. As a resident she always had a smile for everybody and won the hearts of many. Leah is survived by her four children, Carson (Charlene) Ferguson, Kelly (Cecil Burke), Korena (Brad) MacDonald, Bonnie (Daniel) Wolodka; daughter-in-law, Heather Ferguson; one sister, Korena (William) Hooper. She is also survived by her 14 precious grandchildren, Lynn Ann, Tyler, Carrie Ann, Terry, Amanda, Leah Michelle, Leanne, Kent, Jacob, Mitchell, Lauren, Ellenna, Jessica and Jamey. Besides her parents, Leah was predeceased by her husband, James 'Bart', son, Jimmie, sisters, Rhoda, Rosie, Phyllis, Ann May, Kathleen and brothers, Jackie, Carmen, Willie, Henry and Bobbie. Visitation will take place Tuesday, Nov. 4 at the S.W. Chant & Son Funeral Home, 564 Alexandra St., Sydney from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 5 at Bethel Presbyterian Church, Sydney, with Rev. Bob Lyle officiating. Reception to follow at the S.W. Chant Funeral Home reception area. Interment to take place in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens at a later date. Online condolences may be sent to our webpage at www.chantfuneralhome.com. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Frank Kozera 76, Big Bras d'Or - It is with great sadness that the family announce the passing of Frank Kozera on Saturday, Nov. 1, 2008, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney. Born in Sydney, he was the son of Mrs. Loretta Kozera, Whitney Pier and the late Peter Kozera. Frank was a proud lighthouse keeper in Louisbourg for 21 years, and then the lighthouse keeper for 14 years at Black Rock in Big Bras d'Or until his retirement in 1990. He enjoyed fishing and hunting and he was an avid dart player. Besides his mother, Loretta, he is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Yvonne (Fleet); his daughters, Judy Kozera (Leonard), Louisbourg, Loretta (Sheldon) Squires, Big Bras d'Or and his son, Frank (Valerie) Kozera, Ottawa; seven grandchildren, and four great grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister, Shirley (Adrian); brothers, Walter (Margie), Bernie (Judy), all of Sydney, as well as his special nephew Peter John Kozera. Besides his father, Peter, he was predeceased by his brother, Donald, and sister, Betty Ann. The family would like to send a special thanks to the Cape Breton Regional Hospital staff in ICU, 4A, also the Glace Bay ICU and North Sydney 5th floor. Memorial service will take place 1 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 4 at the S.W. Chant & Son Funeral Home, 564 Alexandra St., Sydney with Pastor Sheldon Chant officiating. Online condolences may be sent to our webpage at www.chantfuneralhome.com. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Milentie 'Millie' Wiseman 89, Baddeck/New Waterford - Milentie Wiseman, 89, of the Alderwood Rest Home, Baddeck, and a former resident of Mahon Street, New Waterford passed away Saturday, Nov. 1, 2008 ,at the Victoria County Hospital, Baddeck. Born in New Waterford, Millie was the daughter of the late Thomas and Bridget (MacIntyre) Flutur. She was a member of St. Agnes Church and a former member of the RCL Branch 15, New Waterford. Millie moved to Little Narrows and spent many years in this location. While there, she became quite active in the community. She loved flowers, cooking and gardening. Millie is survived by her daughter, Marilyn (Earl) MacIntosh, Orangedale; one sister, Rita Gouthro, New Waterford; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren and one great great-grandchild. She was predeceased by her first husband, Angus Beaton, second husband, Charles Wiseman, son, Dave Beaton, brother, Joseph White and two sisters, Roddena Campbell and Nellie Gillis. There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place under the care and direction of the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, New Waterford. The funeral mass officiated by Rev. Doug MacDonald is Wednesday at 11 a.m. in the Parish of St. Leonard, St. Agnes Church, New Waterford. Interment to be held at a later date in Baddeck. Following the mass all are welcome to join the family for a reception in the parish hall, directly across from the church. Condolences to the family can also be expressed through the funeral home website www.vjmcgillivray.ca. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Joseph 'Joey' Harte 73, New Waterford - It is with heavy hearts that we announce the sudden and peaceful passing of Joey Harte, 73, on Saturday, Nov. 1, 2008, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney. At his bedside during his time of death, Joey was surrounded by his loving and caring family. Born in New Waterford and a resident of Hudson Street, he was the son of the late Robert 'Bob' and Mary (Fraser) Harte. Joey was employed as a coal miner for 21 years and worked in number 12, 18 and 26 collieries. He was a member of St. Joseph's Church, New Victoria. Joey loved hockey and baseball and was an avid Leafs fan. Throughout his lifetime he was always a strong NDP supporter. Joey will be sadly missed and always remembered by his loving wife of 50 years, the former Leona (MacLellan) Harte; two sons, Sandy (Linda), New Waterford, Cory Joseph (Doreen), at home and four daughters, Sharon (Eric) Hine, Calgary, Norma Jean (Phil), New Brunswick, Hilda, New Waterford, Arlene (Joe) Deruelle, Scotchtown. Joey is survived by one brother, Kenny, Ottawa; 14 grandchildren; four great grandchildren; sisters and brothers-in-law; several nieces, nephews and many friends. Joey was predeceased by his son, Martin, grandson, Martin Jr., a sister, Carrie and three brothers, Thomas, William and Robert. He was also predeceased by a daughter-in-law, Debbie (MacDougall) Harte. Visitation will take place Tuesday and Wednesday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford. The funeral mass officiated by Rev. Paul MacNeil is Thursday morning at 11 a.m. in the Parish of St. Leonard, St. Joseph Church, New Victoria. Hiscock North Sydney - It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our dear husband, father and brother, George Hiscock, a resident of Seaview Drive, North Sydney, on Sunday, Nov. 2, 2008, at the Northside General Hospital. Born in North Sydney, he was a son of the late Harry and Amelia (Annesty) Hiscock. George was a veteran of the Second World War serving overseas with the Canadian Army. After returning home from the war, George spent a brief time operating a store on the corner of Victoria and Regent streets in North Sydney. He would then return to serving his country with the Canadian Armed Forces as an auto mechanic, retiring back to North Sydney, after 32 years of service. George was a quiet man, content to spend his retirement working at home and spending time with his family. He was an adherent of St. Matthew Wesley United Church, North Sydney. He is survived by his wife, Alice (Ellis) Hiscock; his daughter, Brenda and son, Keith, both of North Sydney and brothers, Jim and Fred, both of P.E.I. He was predeceased by sisters, Mary, Rita and Mildred, and by brothers, Harry and Roy. There will be no visitation by request. A graveside committal service will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 5 at Lakeside Cemetery North Sydney, with Rev. Genevieve Trudel officiating. Online condolences may be sent to info@wjdooley.com. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Theresa MacDonald 86, Glace Bay/Halifax - Theresa MacDonald, 86, formerly of 995 Main St., Glace Bay, N.S., passed away at St. Vincent's Guest Home Halifax on Oct. 31, 2008. She had been a resident of the Guest home for the past six years. Theresa was a daughter of the late James MacKinnon and Anne Farrell of Benacadie Glen. She is survived by her children, Donna (Francis) McDonald, Lower Sackville, Maurice (Alvera) MacDonald, Upper Rawdon; her stepdaughter, Margie (the late Dr. Fred) Murdock, Fredericton, N.B. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Bryson, Brandon, Ashley and Evelyn and her step grandchildren, Dr. John, Dr. Eddie, Dr. Carol Anne and Mary Ellen. She is also survived by her sister, Elizabeth Martin, Timmins, Ont.; and many nieces and nephews who loved her dearly. Theresa was a member of St. Anne's parish, Glace Bay, as well as a member of the church choir for many years and St. Anne's Sodality. She was also a member of the Cozy Card Club for over 40 years. Theresa was predeceased by her husband, Maurice 'Blue' MacDonald 1982, her parents as well as siblings, Bridget, Catherine, Donald, Archie, Anthony, Bessie, Joe, Michael, Sadie and Clara. Cremation has taken place. Visitation at Curry''s Funeral Home, 775 Main St., Glace Bay, on Tuesday, Nov. 4, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral service at St. Anne's Church, on Wednesday, Nov. 5 at 10 a.m. with her nephew Fr. Errol MacDonald officiating. The family offers sincere thanks to the staff of St. Vincent's Guest Home for their kindness to Theresa and her family while she was a resident.
