Cape Breton Deaths November 10, 2008 Monday Elizabeth Marie 'Vickers' O'Neill, RN 85, Glace Bay - It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Elizabeth Marie 'Vickers' O'Neill, 85, of Glace Bay on Saturday, Nov.. 8, 2008, at the Glace Bay General Hospital. Born in Sydney Mines, she was the daughter of the late Matthew and Teresa (Purdie) Vickers. Elizabeth trained at the St. Joseph's Hospital School of Nursing, Glace Bay, graduating in 1945. She worked many years as a maternity nurse and retired in 1987. She will be remembered by many for her good sense of humour and her excellent care of the many newborns she attended in the nursery, including several of her own grandchildren. A strong woman of faith, Elizabeth was a longtime member of St. Anne's Church, Glace Bay. She was a member of St. Anne's CWL, St. Joseph's Alumni and a former member of the St. Vincent de Paul Society in Bridgeport. She will be sadly missed by her son, Shaun (Barbara); daughters, Sharon Kelloway, Betty (Bill) Metcalfe; cherished grandchildren, Shaun E. (Yolande), George (Kendra), Ian O'Neill (Kelly), Matthew, Bryan, Christopher Kelloway, Georgia and Edgar Metcalfe. Also surviving are Elizabeth's great grandchildren, Zander, Nathalie, Logan, Chase; nieces, nephews and her brother, Ian, Ontario. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, George in 1981, a brother, Ferdinand, sisters, Jean, Evelyn Jessome MacDougall, Genevieve Simpson, brothers-in-law, Clarence Jessome, James MacDougall and Ernie Sampson. Visitation will be held Monday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. The funeral mass officiated by Rev. Leo Boone is Tuesday at 10 a.m. in St. Anne's Church with a reception to follow in the foyer. After the reception, interment will be held at the chapel in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Elizabeth may be made to the Cancer Society, St. Vincent de Paul or a charity of one's choice. Condolences to the family can be expressed through the funeral home website www.vjmcgillivray.ca. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Howard Edmund MacIntyre Albert Bridge - The family of Howard Edmund MacIntyre regrets to announce his sudden death on Saturday, Nov. 8, 2008, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital. He was the son of the late Robert and Hazel (Munroe) MacIntyre. Howard was a graduate of St. Francis Xavier and of Nova Scotia Technical College. As a professional engineer he worked in Nova Scotia, Quebec and Newfoundland, always with the greatest integrity and pride in his profession. He was deeply committed to this family and we enjoyed his love and devotion all of our lives. He loved and enjoyed life, his family and friends. He could usually see the funny side of any situation. He liked to do things and to do them the right way. He loved his dogs. He loved living in Mira, doing projects and being in the company of those he loved. He knew that we loved him and respected him and enjoyed his company. He leaves a great hole in our lives. We will miss him, but the lessons he taught us of love, hard work, integrity and laughter, and his memory will remain with us for the rest of our days. Rest in peace. Howard is survived by his wife, Regis (Ferguson) MacIntyre; children, Mary Frances, Chicoutimi, Que., Howie (Anne MacRury), Sydney, and Michael (Dorothy Simmons), Grande Prairie, Alta.; grandchildren, Mirrah, Tessa, Sean and Daniel, cherish his memory, as do relatives and friends. He was predeceased by a brother, Robert and sisters, Mary and Anne. Visitation will be held Monday, 7-9 p.m. at Sydney Memorial Chapel. Born in Transcona, Man., Nov. 1, 1957, he was the son of Richard and Rita (Norman) Leach. He was a member of Immaculate Conception parish, Sydney Mines. Rick graduated from Sydney Mines High School in 1975, from St. FX University, and obtained his masters degree from McMaster University. His greatest joy was in teaching and writing, and in sharing his passion for environmental and political issues. He enjoyed travelling and had a particular love of Asian culture. He is survived by his loving parents, Rita (Norman) and Richard Leach, Sydney Mines; his brother, Stuart (Carol), Charlottetown; his sisters, Nancy (Jacques LaCombe), Montreal, Lynette (Christian) Gagnon, Quebec City, and Carolyn (Rick) Grey, Fredericton. He will also be fondly remembered by several nieces and nephews. Visitation for Richard Leach will be held in the J.M. Jobes Funeral Home, 635 Main St., Sydney Mines, on Monday, Nov. 10 from 7-9 p.m. The funeral mass will be celebrated Tuesday, at 2 p.m. in Immaculate Conception Church, Convent Street, Sydney Mines, with Fr. J.J. MacDonald and Fr. Hughie MacNeil officiating. A reception will follow the mass in the Centennial Room. Born in Glace Bay, Etta was the beloved daughter of the late John and Angela (Strickey) Verbiski. She was a member of Holy Cross Church and at one time was very active in church affairs. Etta was a gentle lady who sacrificed her life for all of her loved ones. She was a friend to everyone she encountered and was well respected by her peers. Etta liked to go to the casino once in awhile; but mostly she enjoyed playing cards with her friends on weekends. She was a marvellous cook and loved to bring her family together over a beautiful meal. Etta was the beloved twin sister to her brother, Bernie; aunt to Bernadette Wiseman (Don), Dr. Daniele (Bill) and baby, Lauren, Brad, Chris, Joan; and several nieces and nephews.She was predeceased by sisters, Minnie Buckley, Josie Smith, Harriet Prus and brothers, Aulay, Normie, John and Frank. Visitation will be held Tuesday, Nov. 11 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. The funeral mass officiated by Rev. Jake Andrea is Wednesday at 11 a.m. in Holy Cross Church, Glace Bay, followed by interment in the parish cemetery. Ralph was employed by KFC, Sydney River for 35 years. He was a former bartender at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 12, Sydney, and had worked for CN Railway. He leaves to mourn his loving family, John A. MacNeil, Valerie (Malcolm), Carol (Johnny), Darlene (Derrick), Brian (Sharon), Gail (Kenny), Karen (Brian); numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, his beloved cats, Holly and Dusty; and his best friend, John Stevens. Ralph was predeceased by Viola MacNeil. Visitation for the late Ralph Walker will take place today (Monday, Nov. 10) from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the S.W. Born in Florence, her earthly birthday was March 6, 1910, her heavenly birthday was Nov. 8, 2008. She was the daughter of the late Norman and Elizabeth (Richardson) MacIntyre. Ma will be missed by all who knew her, especially her children, Jock (Edie), Florence, and Betty, Sydney River, whom she resided with; also daughter-in-law, Debbie. She is survived by eight grandchildren, Karen, Debbie, Kenny, Keith, Jock, Trevor, Kimberly, Jacqueline; eight great-grandchildren and five great great-grandchildren; also by many nieces and nephews. Lettie was predeceased by her husband, Jock, son, Jimmie, sister, Mary, brothers, Samuel, Bill, Roddie, Norman (Diddy), Jimmie, Angus, Johnie, Tom and Philip.
