Cape Breton Deaths November 20, 2008 Thursday Marion Paul 64, Eskasoni - It is with heavy hearts and loving memories that we, the family of Marion Paul, announce her death at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, Monday, Nov. 17, 2008. Born Feb. 10, 1944, Marion was the daughter of the late Theresa Julian (nee) Battiste, Chapel Island. She was grateful for her brief stay at the home of Elizabeth Francis and the late Charles A. Francis, Eskasoni. She was raised by her foster mother, the late Mary Ann Sylliboy. Marion dedicated many years service to the Holy Family parish as a chairperson for the parish council. She actively organized many parish events to help with the renovations of the church. She also organized an annual parish pilgrimage to Ste. Anne de Beaupre. Marion served as a team leader with the Christopher Leadership Course in the 1980s and was part of the Cursillo movement. For 40 years Marion was a dedicated, loving educator. During those 40 years she was committed to the academic, social and emotional well being of every child who came into her sphere of influence. She spent 14 years as a teacher in the classroom, 11 years as a post-secondary co-ordinator and 15 years as the director of education for the Eskasoni School Board. She was honoured for her leadership in education by the Centre of Leadership Development during her time as director of education. She is survived by her husband of 40 years, Eugene Paul; sons, Jeffrey (Wanda), Eugene 'E.J.' (Whitney); daughter, Claudia; six grandchildren and one great-granddaughter; brothers, Albert (Judy) Julian, Donny; sisters, Marie (Fred), Beverly; and foster brother, Roger Morris. Also, survived by aunts, Harriet Doyle, Chapel Island, Mary Rose Gould, Membertou; godchildren, Debby Lutes-Cormier, Kji' Keptin Andrew Denny, Winston Patles, Joe Marshall, Alphonse Young, John Roy Paul, Mari K Joe, Suzanne Patles, Madeline Denny, John Joe Augustine, David Noel Milliea; and many nieces and nephews. Predeceased by her mother, Theresa (Julian) Battiste, Chapel Island, foster father, Charles A. Francis and foster mother, Mary Ann Sylliboy, foster sister, Donna Marie Francis, aunts, Isabel Bernard, Mary Paul, Mary Ann Battiste, uncles, John and Stephen Battiste, brothers, Russell Battiste, Freeman and Stanley Julian and godchild, Wendy Denny. Visitation for the late Mrs. Paul will take place tonight (Thursday, Nov. 20), after 7 p.m. at the Gabriel Centre, Church Street, Eskasoni. A funeral mass will be celebrated Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at Holy Family Church with Fr. Martin MacDougall officiating. Interment in the parish cemetery. She will be remembered for her incredible approachable personality in the workplace and in the community, her tremendous sense of family, her love of community, her amazing spirit of determination and her unwavering dedication and support of education, her sense of fairness as well as her wonderful sense of humour. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Ronald Malcolm MacDonald 84, Glace Bay - It is with great sadness that we, the family regret to announce the sudden passing of Ronald Malcolm MacDonald on Nov. 17, 2008, at home at the age of 84. Born in Port Morien, he was the son of the late Daniel and Cassie (Holms) MacDonald. He was employed as a carpentry contractor and was a navy veteran of the Second World War, who joined the navy at the tender age of 17 as an ASTECH. Ronald was a member of the Branch 5 legion, Port Morien, then transferring to Branch 3, Glace Bay. He served in every capacity of the legion; most recently he received the Meritorious Service Award. Ronald worked for M.R. Chapples and also for A. Manning MacInnis and all over Cape Breton Island in his younger years, and also operated his own contraction company. Ronald grew up in Port Morien and was a member of the Port Morien Volunteer Fire Department. Ronald was a member of Glace Bay Coal Town Chorus, the Legionnaires Chorus, the Newsom Choir and a member of St. Mary's Church. Ronald was active and enjoyed life up until the day he was called home. Ronald was known for his sense of humour and storytelling ability. Ronald is survived by his wife, Lena (Smith); daughter, Laurie (Edward), Halifax; and son, Ronald, Glace Bay. Also surviving are three sisters, Anna MacPherson, Port Morien, Margaret MacKenzie, Glace Bay, and Florence (Jerry) Green, Donkin; and one grandson, Leo. Ronald was predeceased by his sister, Christine Snow and brothers, Willam and George. Visitation for the late Mr. Ronald Malcolm MacDonald will be held Thursday, Nov. 20 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in Patten Funeral Home, 71 Union St., Glace Bay, 849-7520. Born in Pictou, Dec. 26, 1920, he was the son of the late Jack and Blanche Cox of Pictou. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. He was a member of Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 138 Ashby; past president and life member. He was a veteran from the Second World War, having served in France, Germany, Italy and Holland with the Princess Louise Fusiliers out of Halifax (Halifax Armories). He is survived by his wife, Mary Lou; daughter, Valerie, Sydney; sons, John Jr. (Dora) Cox, Sydney, Bill (Brenda) Cox, Sydney, Kevin (Chantal Bourque) Cox, Moncton, Robert (Dawn) Cox, Sydney; five grandchildren, John (Adele) Cox, Sydney, Nicole (Garth), Sackville, N.B., Catlin, Braden, Brittany; great-grandchildren, Haley, Makayla and Leigh-Anne. He was predeceased by his first wife, Margaret Johnson, brother, Bill Frances Cox and a sister in infancy. Visitation for the late Mr. Cox will take place Thursday, Nov. 20 from 7-9 p.m. at T.W. Born in Little Pond, he was the son of the late Bert and Theresa (MacNeil) Boutilier. He was a member of St. Stephen parish, Florence. John was a strong, hard-working family man. He worked in the coal mines for many years, as a lobster fisherman and as a stevedore at CN Marine. He was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting. He is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Verna Mary 'Mae' (MacDonald) Boutilier; sons, Keith (Joan Stubbert), Little Pond, Ken, Calgary, Alta., and Jackie (Dale Walsh), Florence; daughters, Theresa (Daniel) Nicholson, Sydney Mines, and Beverly, Little Pond. He is also survived by six wonderful grandchildren, Verna (Paul Fraser), Sydney Mines, Kelly (Mark Jessome), Hinton, Alta., Nicole (Matt Cormier), Prince Edward Island, David, Calgary, Alta., Jay, Halifax, and Dana (John Burke), Halifax; and four beautiful great-grandchildren, Holly, Cody, Kelly and Kendra. John is also survived by brothers, Lawrence, Westmount, Garfield, Little Pond, and sisters, Agnes Currie, Sydney Mines, and Catherine Young, Little Pond. Besides his parents, John was predeceased by his infant daughter, Deanna Joan and his brothers, Sidney, Hector and Stanley. There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place. A funeral mass to celebrate the life of John Day Boutilier will be held in St. Stephen Church, Florence, Saturday, Nov. 22, 2008, at 1 p.m. with Fr. Vern Boutilier officiating. Born in Northside East Bay, he was the son of the late Alexander and Catherine (MacEachern) MacGillivary of East Bay. He was a member of St. Anthony Daniel parish, a lifelong member of Royal Canadian Legion, Westside Branch 126; also a lifetime member of United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America, Local 1588. He served with the Royal Canadian Air Force in the Second World War. He was a loving father and grandfather. He is survived by daughters, Catherine, Darlene (Leonard Guy) and special daughter, Debbie Pezzarello; one son, Michael 'Sandy' (Ann Marie) MacGilllivary; and grandchildren, Michael and Melissa MacGillivary and Alicia Guy. Born in North Sydney, he was a son of Llewellyn and Lena (MacAulay) Evans. David was employed with NS Power Inc. as a chemist at the Point Tupper plant in Port Hawkesbury, retiring in June, after 30 years of service. A love in David's life was spending time at his cottage in Margaree Valley, especially fishing and swimming in the Margaree River. He was a member of St. John the Baptist Anglican Church, North Sydney, and a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 43, Port Hawkesbury. David is survived by both his parents, Llewellyn and Lena Evans, North Sydney; three sisters, Patsy Evans, George's River, Beth Evans, Yarmouth, and Vivian (Colin Ross), Margaree Valley; three brothers, Brent (June), Mill Creek, Philip, Halifax and Harvey (Kathy), North Sydney; eight nieces and nephews; seven grandnieces and nephews; and several aunts and uncles. Born in Sydney, July 27, 1961, he was the son of Mrs. Catherine 'Kay' Rowe, Sydney, and the late Robert 'Bobby' Rowe. GG will be sadly missed by her great-grandsons, Owen and Dylan. She is also survived by her brother, Donald (Pauline), Toronto; and many nieces and nephews. Jean had many friends in Halifax, Baddeck and in Ottawa, where she currently resided and she will be missed by them all. Jean was a very talented lady with oil painting, knitting, stained glass, photography, badminton and bowling among her interests. In keeping with Jean's wishes, a private burial will be held at Fairview Cemetery in Halifax, N.S., where she will be laid to rest alongside her beloved husband. Elemena was an outstanding member of UNIA and an avid dart player. She belonged to St. Mary's Anglican Church and was also a member of the ladies auxiliary of UNIA. Elemena was the last surviving member of her immediate family. She is survived by many nieces and nephews and cared for by her greatniece, Gina Headley. Elemena was predeceased by her parents and special cousin, Gerald (Vaughn) O'Neil and Sheila Headly.
