Cape Breton Deaths November 27, 2008 Thursday Joseph Mombourquette 'Little Joe' 83, New Waterford - Joseph Mombourquette, 83, of MacLeod Avenue, New Waterford, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 26, 2008, at his residence. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. Born in Cheticamp, Joe was the son of the late Simon and Josephine (Aucoin) Mombourquette. Joe was a devoted member of St. Agnes Church. He came to New Waterford at an early age to work in the coal mines. He was employed as a coal miner for 43 years and was known to those who worked with him as a hard worker who took pride in his job. Joe always enjoyed a good laugh or a practical joke. In his retirement, he enjoyed walking, visiting at the hospital, playing cards, spending time with his family or watching and discussing sports and world events. Joe took great pride in his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was a man of strong faith who enjoyed his daily mass and prayer. Joe will be remembered for his great sense of humour and quick wit. Joe is survived by his best friend and wife of 60 years, Marie (Aucoin) Mombourquette; three daughters, Shirley LeBlanc, Cheticamp, Paula (Greg) MacNeil, Darlene (Joey) Milley, both in New Waterford; and one son, Wayne (Betty Bishop) Mombourquette, Big Pond, C.B. Joe is survived by six grandchildren, Blair, Brian, Wade, Dale, Tara, Kayla and four great-grandchildren. Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced at a later date by the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, New Waterford. Donations in memory of Joe can be made to Palliative Care. Condolences to the family can be expressed through the funeral home website www.vjmcgillivray.ca. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Irene Carmel (Tucker) Syms 59, Scotchtown - Irene Syms, 59, of Scotchtown, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 26, 2008, at New Waterford Consolidated Hospital. Born in New Waterford, she was a daughter of the late Ken and Mary Margaret (MacLellan) Tucker. Irene was a member of the Parish of St. Leonard, St. Michael Church, River Ryan. She enjoyed sewing, crocheting and working with ceramics. She also loved playing tarabish. Surviving are daughter, Corina Syms, Scotchtown; son, Adrian 'Francis' (Monica) Syms, Edmonton, Alta.; brothers, Kenny (Darlene), Sidney (Margie) and Lawrence, all of New Waterford; sister, Merdina Polly Young, Kentville, N.S.; two grandchildren, Carter and Rory. Irene was also survived by her best friend, Adrian. She was predeceased by sister, Hilda Elaine and brother, Earl John. There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place under the care and direction of V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford. A funeral mass of celebration will be held Saturday, Nov. 29, 2008, at 11 a.m. in the Parish of St. Leonard, St. Michael Church with Fr. Paul MacNeil officiating. A private family interment will follow at St. Agnes Cemetery, New Waterford. Donations in Irene's memory may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society. Born in Glace Bay, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Elizabeth (Hest) Campbell. Betty was a longtime member of Holy Rosary parish, Westmount. Surviving are her sons, Robert (Lisa), Musquodoboit Harbour; Fr. Keith, Digby; four grandchildren Mark, Samantha, Katelin and Breanna; brother, Joe (Leone) Campbell, Reserve Mines; sister, Marie (Barry) Irvine, Waverley; sisters-in-law, Marie MacGillivary and Marion (Bud) Walke, and numerous nieces and nephews. Betty was predeceased by her husband, Robert, brothers, Roddy, Charlie, Bernie, John, Thomas and sister, Kay Gilliam. Visitation for the late Betty Billard will be held today (Thursday) at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel from 6- 9 p.m. with prayer service at 8 p.m. The funeral mass will be celebrated Friday at 11 a.m. in Holy Rosary Church with Frs. Doug Murphy and Keith Billard concelebrating. Dearly loved son of Steve and Donna (nee Wilson) Hillier. Loving brother of Taylor Joseph Hillier. Cherished grandson of Dave and Linda Hillier and Greta Wilson (late Watson Wilson). Also survived by his great grandmother, Vera Atkinson. Will be sadly missed by many cousins, aunts and uncles. Visitation will be held at Grant Brown Funeral Home Rolston Chapel, Kemptville (613-258-2435), Thursday, Nov. 27 from 12-2 p.m. Funeral service will follow in the chapel of the funeral home at 2 p.m. Those who wish may make memorial donations to CHEO or Alberta Children's Hospital.
