Cape Breton Deaths November 24, 2008 Monday Allison Louise (Cantwell) Buffett Aug. 14, 1956-Nov. 22, 2008 Scotch Lake - It is with deep sadness and treasured memories that we announce the passing of our beloved daughter, sister, wife, mother and grandmother Allison Louise Buffett, on Nov. 22, 2008, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, after a courageous battle with cancer. Born in Bras d'Or, she was the daughter of Louise (White) and the late Warren Cantwell. She was a member of St. Joseph parish, Bras d'Or. Allison was a longtime employee at Clearwater in North Sydney. Allison enjoyed life to the fullest. She loved camping, reading, bowling, cooking and shopping. Moments valued by Allison surrounded those times spent with her family, whether it be playing with her grandchildren Tyler and Rebecca, or simply chatting on the phone with her daughter Amie, or son Cory. She enjoyed being a devoted wife to her husband Wayne. The most important things in Allison's life were faith, family, and friends. Her greatest gifts were her love of people and zest for life. She had a unique way of making everyone feel special. Allison is survived by her devoted and loving husband of 31 years Wayne; her daughter, Amie (Cory) McGraw, Halifax; her son, Cory, Alberta; and her cherished grandchildren, Tyler and Rebecca McGraw. Also left to mourn are her sisters, Marlene, North Sydney, and Patsy (Dean), Sydney; her brothers, Kevin (Linda), Sydney, Lorne (Patrice), Sydney Mines, Reggie (Debbie), Bras d'Or, David (Cynthia), Scotch Lake; also a very special person that touched Allison's life, Betty Roland; numerous nieces and nephews, Allison's extended family, sisters-in-law, Yvonne (Hartland) Davis, Joan (Sander) Carey, Mary (Tom) MacKinnon, Olive (Bob) Audette, Sharon (Ernie) Carey, Joanne (Greg) Walker; brothers-in-law, Barry (Frances), Cecil (Edie), Bernie (Diane), Earl (Wanda), and Cameron (Doreen). She was predeceased by her father, Warren, brother Russell, father and mother-in-law, Bill and Minnie Buffett, brother-in-law, Junior Buffett, and sister-in-law, Josephine Buffett. Visitation for Allison Buffett will be held in the J.M. Jobes Funeral Home, 635 Main St., Sydney Mines, today (Monday, Nov. 24) from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. The funeral mass will be celebrated Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. in St. Joseph Church, Bras d'Or, with Fr. Peter MacLeod officiating. The burial will be in the parish cemetery. A reception will follow the mass in the parish hall. Online condolences may be sent to the family at jmjobesfuneralhome@ns.aliantzinc.ca. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Donald Sheldon MacInnis 77, Birch Grove/ New Waterford - Donald MacInnis, 77, of Birch Grove passed away Friday, Nov. 21, 2008, at the Maple Hill Manor, New Waterford. Born in Glace Bay, he was the son of the late Samuel and Eliza (Stonier) MacInnis. Donnie had been an employee of McKinlays Pop Factory, Glace Bay and Devco. Not religious by nature, Donnie was a Christian (Presbyterian) by heart. A kind and gentle man, Donnie spent his life loving and caring for his family, especially his sister Catherine. He enjoyed many summers at his bungalow in Loch Lomond and was deeply grateful when his niece Cathy and her husband Dan O'Neill built a cottage in St. Stephen, N.B. for himself and his sister. While at his new cottage, Donnie tended to his chickens and his horse, 'Mooney'. He enjoyed doing chores such as piling wood, washing dishes or whatever was needed, Donnie was always glad to help in any way. He will also be remembered for his great sense of humour and his ability to make people laugh. Children and animals were drawn to his beautiful nature. Donnie spent the last 16 years of his life living with his sister, Catherine; and his niece, Brenda (Dave) MacRury; their son, Jamie (Daeton Bryson) MacRury, Birch Grove. He is survived by two sisters, Catherine MacDonald, Birch Grove, Ethel (Roy) Mugford, California; one brother, Alton, Truro; nieces, nephews, grand nieces and nephews and great-grand nieces and nephews, from one end of the globe to another. Donnie was predeceased by brothers, Fred, Jackie, Sam and his brother-in-law, Herb MacDonald. Cremation has taken place under the direction of the V.J. McGillivray Funeral in Glace Bay. Born in New Waterford, he was the son of the late Sylvain and Violet Christina (Cameron) Brenna. An ironworker by trade for over 40 years, Johnny was a respected and proud member of the Ironworkers Local Union 752. An outdoorsman at heart, he spent many wonderful hunting and fishing trips with friends and family and there was always a good story to be told. He also enjoyed his summers diving and swimming off the Queens Rock. Johnny was well known for his contagious smile, kind heart and easygoing nature. Grampy will be truly missed by his faithful friend 'Breton'. Johnny is survived by his pride and joy, his precious daughter, Sonya 'Babe' (Brenna) Desrosiers; sisters, Lorrine, Germaine, Sylvia 'Bugsy', Betty (Wayne) Gillis; and brothers, Tony (Judy), Sylvain (Pierrette), Phonse (Marion), Donnie (Margaret-Ann), and Jerry 'Jooky' (Sis). Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, Carol Brenna, brothers, Eddie and Henry, sister, Carmel, in infancy and son-in-law, Lawrence Desrosiers. Dad is once again with Mom. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Kathryn (Kaye) Adele Turnbull 66, New Waterford/Rocky Mountain House, Alta. - Kaye Turnbull, formally of 3108 Roaches Rd., New Waterford, passed away peacefully at Rocky Mountain House General Hospital surrounded by her loving family, Thursday, Nov. 20, 2008, after a courageous nine-year battle with cancer. Born in New Waterford, she was the daughter of the late Hubert Chiasson and Josephine (Boudreau) Fortune. Kaye was a member of Mount Carmel Church. Kaye worked in the cafeteria at Breton Education Center for 20 years. Kaye loved camping, quilting, walking and will always be remembered for her shear devotion to St. Theresa. Kaye will be deeply missed by her husband and best friend of 47 years, Michael Turnbull. Also left to mourn are her four children, Arthur 'Bobby' (Glenda) Chiasson, New Waterford, Debbie (Titus) Campbell, Michael (Lori) Turnbull and David Turnbull, all of Rocky Mountain House; grandchildren, Jason and Stephen Campbell, Melanie and Michael Turnbull, Chad Chiasson and Kelsie and Kendall Turnbull; also one great-grandchild, Kyra Campbell. Also surviving are her sisters, Mary (Bill) MacEachern, New Waterford, Colleen (Bill) Manuel, Rocky Mountain House, Dorthy (Sheldon) Eldridge, Ontario; many nieces and nephews and many close friends. Besides her parents Kaye was predeceased by her stepfather, Wilfred (Bomey) Fortune, brothers, Arthur and Johnny Chiasson and Jerome Fortune. Kaye warmed the hearts of many with her kindness and will be sadly missed by all. There will be no visitation as cremation has taken place under the direction of Flinn Funeral Services Ltd. A memorial mass to celebrate Kaye's life will be held in New Waterford at a later date. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or the Mother of Sorrows Pioneer Shrine, Mabou, N.S. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ John 'Francie' MacLeod 60, Glace Bay - John ' Francie' MacLeod, 60, of Tanya Drive, Glace Bay passed away Saturday, Nov. 22, 2008, at the Glace Bay Hospital. Born in Glace Bay, Francie was the son of the late John and Frances (Fry) MacLeod. He was a choir member and steward at Warden United Church, Glace Bay. Francie was employed as an iron worker in the local area and later joined Devco as a mine mechanic. He was employed with Devco for nearly 20 years working in No. 26, Prince and Phalen mines. Francie loved to work in his garden and do mechanical work on his vehicles. But mostly, he will be remembered as a caring and loving husband and father. Francie is survived by his wife, the former Betty Brushett; one daughter, Christine and her husband Adam Vint, Halifax; one brother, Angus (Joyce), Glace Bay; and three sisters, Anna (Joe) Dorshe, Catherine Weiler, Joan (Ronnie) McIlveen, all in Ontario. Francie's mother passed away while he was an infant and he was raised by his great aunt Mary Ferguson and his cousin Elizabeth Duder, Glace Bay. Besides his parents, Francie was predeceased by one son, John Francis Jr., a brother, John Edward 'Junior', sister, Mary Wadden 'Sis' and his great aunt, Mary Ferguson. Visitation will be held Monday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. The funeral service officiated by Rev. Clayton Austin is Tuesday at 2 p.m. in Warden United Church, Glace Bay, followed by interment in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens. A reception will take place in the church hall. Francie will be taken to the church at noontime Tuesday. Born in New Waterford, he was the son of Anna MacKenzie and the late Russell Miller. John was a member of Mt. Carmel Church, New Waterford. By trade, he was a heavy equipment operator and loved fixing old trucks on his spare time. John had a wonderful and compassionate personality which enabled him to develop many friendships with adults as well as children throughout his lifetime. John is survived by his wife, the former Angela Sinclair; one daughter, Alisha (Jeff); two stepdaughters, Holly and Jamie; and one stepson, Thomas, all in Whitney Pier. Also surviving are seven brothers, Ronnie (Beverly), Ontario, Ryan, Reagan, Roddy, Richard, Michael, William and three sisters, Francine (Stan), Rita and Rosalyn. John is survived by several nieces, nephews and a very special nephew, Vincent Miller (Sonya). There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place under the direction of V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, New Waterford. A funeral mass will be celebrated Wednesday, Nov. 26 at 11 a.m. in the Parish of St. Leonard, Mt. Carmel Church, New Waterford followed by interment in the parish cemetery. Following the mass, all are invited to the Carmel Centre, New Waterford, for a reception. Effie was the daughter of the late Malcolm and Isabelle MacDonald. She was employed in Toronto as a store detective, and at Tip Top Tailor. Then she moved back to Cape Breton and worked at Gowrie school as play ground supervisor. Effie was a member of St. John United Church, Port Morien. Effie is survived by two daughters, Jocelyn (David) Marshall, Liverpool, and Janice, Sydney; one son, Ian Jonathan (Shirley), Glace Bay; brothers, Calder (Georgina), Glace Bay, and James 'Jimmy', Sydney; brother-in-law, Edward Taylor, Glace Bay; four grandchildren, Bryson, Breton, Breanne Marshall and Hannah McCarty. Effie is also survived my many nieces and nephews. Effie was predeceased by her husband, Ian, sisters, Audrey, Margaret and Ruth, brothers, Evan and Rev. John Nathan MacIntosh. Effie will be sadly missed by best friend Phyllis Lynn. Effie liked sewing and to do oil painting. She also loved animals and was very fluent in Gaelic. She finished university in her 70s and taught in Sunday school in Port Morien. She also liked Broughton where she loved to visit. Effie was a very giving and loving person and will be missed by all who know her. There will be no visitation as cremation has taken place. She also liked doing puzzles, shopping, crocheting, reading and watching television. Mildred is survived by her sisters, Evelyn (Buddy) Keough, Sydney, Hilda Sykes, Willena Smith and Gwen (Ray) Bredo, all of British Columbia; brother, Arthur (Ella), Ontario; and numerous nieces and nephews.
